Offended by being called an Artist

Quite a few years ago when I was stationed in San Diego I was dating this girl in the \"Art\" crowd. Her buddies basically treated me as an uneducated savage (as I was from Louisiana), she scoffed at my mini painting and invited me to go see her friends \"Art\" exhibit. When we went to the exhibit her friends were oohing and ahhing over a canvas , spouting things like \"You can feel the intensity\"....

It was a white canvas with a blue line down the center.

They all looked at me. \"What do you think, Dave?\" asked one of her friends with that \"lets see the barbarians reaction to true art\" look on her face.
\"How much is he charging for it?\" I asked.
\"$500\"
\"Well,\" I replied \" for \"$500 dollars I can paint you any color line you want. Hell, I\'ll paint two.\"
My girlfriend sighed.\"You just don\'t get it.\"
My girlfriend came home later that week to an empty apartment except for a \"Dear Jane\" Letter painted in citadels ultramarine blue. How\'s that for art.

Just recently I have seen a guy who claims himself to be an \"Artist\". He strings up vials of his own semen on a mobile of some sort and calls it \"Creation\"

Even more recently I have seen a guy who swallows dyes or paints and vomits onto a canvas...People consider him an \"Artist\".

And just yesterday...I saw where a woman gives herself an colored enema and squatted over the canvas...and this is \"Art\".

Is it just me or am I the only one who gets
offended when my mini\'s get classified as \"Art\" and this crap(no pun intended) does too.

No I will be proud to be known as a Mini Painter and not an \"Artist\"

You\'re not alone Dave...I call it Modern Fart and not Art...
However I\'d say it depends on what that guy vomiting can produce...If he was able to paint \"identifyable\" things,I \'d be very impressedlol

Yeah, even I who am an \"Artist\" hate those artsy fartsy people. Taking a crap in a certain shape isn\'t art, it\'s defecation no matter how you look at it. The thing behind those peices, though is it gets you thinking how it is made not not what it is or is supposed to represent, and thus inspire imagination in the veiwer. But still, it\'s quite crazy. I never do that stuff (unless it\'s for a grade, in which case I throw up on a peice of canvas). Pretty much anything is art, and the high mucky muck \"Artists\" who deem anything not of their standards are poopy heads!! :p

:|~ There\'s some art for yas!!

Warning...some people may be disturbed by images alluding to the Holocost (as used in the following link.) Please do not view if you feel you may be this way inclined. It is not my intention to offend. (edit)

Here\'s an interesting piece of madern art; \"Hell.\"
This work is very highly regarded and included in the Saatchi Gallery\'s \"100 works that changed British art\" list.

Go on! Give it a CMON rating!

I might be in the minority here. But I can\'t help but give it a 9 or 10. A very moving, powerful piece. Sure the funky green flock and tabletop quality paintjob aren\'t exactly stunning. But the sheer effort and thought put into it are astounding. It looks like a historical, until you see the mutants and pillars of bodies.
Like the worst nightmare of a P.O.W.

Very cool IMHO. It\'s on my PC links favorites now. :)

:innocent:

I agree with PF. If you could deficate the Mona Lisa I would be impressed. If it came out as a stick figure I\'d tell you to eat more and still be vaguely impressed. Otherwise, these people can do whatever they want, I want their grant money as artists though.

Well, ok, since you asked. ;)

Personally, this gets about an 8 from me. The diorama is very well executed, and obviously the conversion/sculpting work is good. The paint job itself, though, is not higher than a 7, though it\'s a little hard to tell from those photos (but hey, I dock points here on CMON for crappy photos, so... ;) ).

I\'ve been called an artist (used to do oils when I was young, but haven\'t touched canvass for a long time), and more recently even with respect to my mini-painting. Given the sources, though, I was more pleased than ticked (mostly other gamers, and they were trying to explain my stuff to their SO\'s).

I fully agree on the \"popular\" art thing, though. I don\'t think a mobile of semen is a \"moving\" or \"inspired\" work of art (though I did get a really hilarious gag gift from a friend: a small vial labeled \"Essence of Bradley\", with a nutritional chart attached. In the vial was a white substance that looked suspiciously like semen, but was actually just conditioner).

I was the same way when I was studying music, especially with respect to \"composers\" like John Cage (no, I don\'t think 4 minutes and 32 seconds of sitting in front of a piano and not playing a single note is \"art\"; it\'s a lack of creativity and talent).

I recently saw a story on an exhibit in NY (IIRC) which was literally an empty room (four white walls with a spot light on each blank space). This exhibit is drawing rave reviews from the NY \'scene\'.

Damned Toreadors.

FUNDING....

That \"HELL\" thing is actually pretty interesting. Some of the soldiers seem to be made from Tamyia 1/35 scale plastic figurines, because I recognize a few as I have them.

What I would want to know is how some of the Artists (pronounced arteests) get funding for the \"blue line on a canvas\" or the \"vomiting colors\"? Do people actually pay them money or are they subsidized by an endowment of some kind?

I mean honestly, I would love to stay home and poop on some paper, if I made a decent living at such. lollol

More realistically, wouldn\'t you love to be able to paint your miniatures on a government grant? Do you think that is possible? Should I contact my congressman? Maybe I should call that Matthew Leskow fellow....lol

I found this sickening, but compulsive, a cross between Breugal, Bosch and Dachau.

On balance I think I would have rather remained ignorant of this.

Sorry Nomis. On reflection I have edited my post.

To Uncle Hex

No apology neccesary - I looked at all the pics. It was quite amazing and if I am in town and near the Sachi galleries might (emphasise might) go in and see it.

It is interesting that what we all come to this site is to look at models which ultimately have their foundation in violence (at least most do) but I have noticed elsewhere that people tend to move away from graphic depictions of death and maiming - even the blood on swords and axes is noticable, when present, because it is rare (or perhaps difficult to achieve realistically:rolleyes:).

So when presented by something as unpalletable as this \"art piece\" it comes as a surprise.

Having said all that I think the health warning is a good idea;)

cheers!

Damn, Unc. Thats disgusting, and moving, and a whole bunch of other things including art. Its not poseur \"art\" - it is the real thing, in my opinion, and while I find it offensive, I also dont have a problem with you posting it here - the discussion is about art after all. And I feel that for art to be effective, it sometimes has to be offensive.

I\'m rather thankful for the link, actually. It IS Bosch-like, though less absurdist and more informed by certain horrors which have elapsed since Bosch\'s time. And I think it\'s brilliant, and well-executed, and it certainly delivers on its name. Why are there no \"devils\" leading this procession of carnage and suffering? I think the artists are saying \"we make our own hell\" no devils needed. Or perhaps they\'re saying something else, discuss lol

To Evil Dave, when somebody says \"You don\'t get it\" the only rational response must be \"No, I don\'t. Explain it to me\". If their response is nonexistent, dismissive, or clearly vague/bullshit then they don\'t get it either. Sounds like your ex\'s art friends missed the true point of art - to reach out to people, not push them apart.

ok after clicking the link and actually seeing hell. I could argue yes that is art.

However much work and thought was put into that...A single blue line and much abstract art is no real work or thought...True ART is Hard Work, look at what Michealangelo went through.

I guess it\'s kinda like music. Most of the pop bands today would have never made it in the 70\'s.

Well if music from the 70\'s is true art, we might as well hang up civilization right now.

 lol

Now that I have to disagree with. Marcel Duchamp made art from common objects, he didn\'t slave and toil over \"In advance of the broken arm\", which consisted of a snow shovel:

boettger9-26-2.jpg

...but this is considered a seminal work of \"Found art\" or \"Readymade art\", and not just by pompous art gits like Evil Dave\'s ex and her friends. Once you start judging art by how much effort it took to make, you become as exclusionary as them. In Duchamp\'s case, the art is in the act - the act of displaying this object as a piece, generating thought and reaction in the viewer.

Now NSA i wasn\'t trying to be exclusionary...but shouldn\'t somewhere a line be drawn...this is art...this is not....you get funding...you do not
