Heh, apparently money screws everything up
I do think the lack of money IS the root of all evil. Poverty begets ignorance, ignorange begets fear, and from there on, Master Yoda pretty much summed it all up all the way to suffering.
People who love money, are IMO, as psychotic as those who simply say money doesn\'t matter. The trick is to understand how money really works, so it can have no power over you.
From the LotR books, one of the things that has kept with me after all these long years is the blessing/gift/destiny that Galadriel imparts to Gimli when they leave Lorien.
She said to him something like \"even though gold may fill your hands, it will not have power over you\". I have always thought he is the one that got the best deal of the whole Fellowship.

We had a guy locally who is one step worse than the \"paper poopers\". A conceptual artist, of all things. He has not produced a physical piece of work in ten years, but still got gov funding. Last year they decided to catch up to him.

I do believe here in Canada you can probably get government funding for minipainting if you bothered to try. I\'m not trying however.

Part of the problem with the whole argument of what is or is not art is that we live in a society that endorses the now over the long term. Getting the fast buck from the trendy brie and white wine spritzer crowd is more important than making something that will have lasting value through the ages. On top of that, you have art students who have been enculturated through years of classes to believe that they are superior to the unwashed masses because they have a \"calling\" to produce art. Because of this lack of a calling, the unwashed masses will never understand the brutal simplicity and beauty of the single blue line on the canvas - but to be chic they will buy it, until the next big wave comes into art, and then they will buy into it for the same reason.

Naaah, I like being called an artist, \'cause it helps get the babes (right? please god, say it\'s so?) and by tacking it on to the end of my name, I think it adds a kinda \"prestigious, potentious bastard\" flare to it, which I quite enjoy.
And besides, going by your description of the painting techniques, I use most of those on my minis, intentionally or, sadly, not.
But I do agree, I get really annoyed by people like that, especially when they treat you like a lower form of life if you don\'t talk about anarchism and how their piece \"blob of shit\" represents the ethos of western society, etc. However, I think that it takes a special type of person to analyze these \"deep\" pieces, and actually bullshit enough to sound like they\'re philosophizing about it. I think the true artists are the art critics. BAM!!

I\'ll be put through the gauntlet that is \"Artsy-Fartsy Land\" (a.k.a. Sheridan College) this fall. While I\'m sure to have a blast for the next 4-5 years of artistic schooling, I\'ll no doubt be bombarded by artsy fruit-loops. Oh well.
As for the stripe painting, and how something like that can be called \"art\" or even be sold, see below.
What you\'re seeing is a painting called Voice of Fire, by an American artist named Barnett Newman. I saw this painting in person in the art gallery in Ottawa, and let me tell you that it\'s big. And that\'s about it. How much did the gallery spend on this heap of (artistic) crap? Only about 1.76 million freakin dollars!! :|~
Honestly, I don\'t understand it at all, but that\'s art for you. As for being called an artist, I think it would be an honour so long as I\'m not associated with the blue-blooded crew of weirdos that you encounted, Evil Dave. I think it would be a great compliment that someone thinks enough of my works to call me an artist.

Im not sure how many have seen the story but the other day in the national newspapers there was a piece about a woman from the USA(I think) who took photos of her naked toddler daughter.Lots of them.And put them all together in one big collage and decided that it was art.She put the pics on her website but removed them after complaints of indecency.So she decided to come to England where for some insane reason an art gallery agreed it was art and put the pics up in their gallery.
Now a certain self confessed peadofile alerted the police that images were going up on the porn sites of said little girl,taken by sickos with mobile phone cameras visiting the gallery.
I seriously considred going there with my 4 year old daughter and some tins of emulsion to investigate.
Im getting myself worked up now but really,how far is someone willing to go for publicity.I think the woman in question is getting wrong and Im sure the gallery is too,But I think the damage is done for the girl.

I have to admit, \"Voice of Fire\" is... impressive when you see it in person. It really is a huge canvas which dominates its room in the National Gallery of Canada. But I got very little from it *emotionally*...
