Thats perfect! My ideal job, not having to really do any work, but just have concepts in my head.

I think I will check into that. Somebody has got to give me a grant here in the states, if not I am moving to Canada and changing my name to Ilium.... lol

If the \"Artist\" got 1.76 Million for that then we are definitely in the wrong business.

I think that there is too much E.N.C syndrome in the Arts world.

(E.N.C == Emperors New Clothes)

Yeah, but..

Originally posted by No Such AgencyI have to admit, \"Voice of Fire\" is... impressive when you see it in person. It really is a huge canvas which dominates its room in the National Gallery of Canada. But I got very little from it *emotionally*...
Unfortunately it would appear that whatever you got out of it \'emotionally\', it\'s cost you about 1.76 million dollars \'taxually\'. That stinks!:flame:

You would have to come up with the whole concept of Stripe first. That must have taken some effort...:flip:

Quite a few years ago when I was stationed in San Diego I was dating this girl in the \"Art\" crowd. Her buddies basically treated me as an uneducated savage (as I was from Louisiana), she scoffed at my mini painting and invited me to go see her friends \"Art\" exhibit. When we went to the exhibit her friends were oohing and ahhing over a canvas , spouting things like \"You can feel the intensity\"....

It was a white canvas with a blue line down the center.

They all looked at me. \"What do you think, Dave?\" asked one of her friends with that \"lets see the barbarians reaction to true art\" look on her face.
\"How much is he charging for it?\" I asked.
\"$500\"
\"Well,\" I replied \" for \"$500 dollars I can paint you any color line you want. Hell, I\'ll paint two.\"
My girlfriend sighed.\"You just don\'t get it.\"
My girlfriend came home later that week to an empty apartment except for a \"Dear Jane\" Letter painted in citadels ultramarine blue. How\'s that for art.

Just recently I have seen a guy who claims himself to be an \"Artist\". He strings up vials of his own semen on a mobile of some sort and calls it \"Creation\"

Even more recently I have seen a guy who swallows dyes or paints and vomits onto a canvas...People consider him an \"Artist\".

And just yesterday...I saw where a woman gives herself an colored enema and squatted over the canvas...and this is \"Art\".

Is it just me or am I the only one who gets
offended when my mini\'s get classified as \"Art\" and this crap(no pun intended) does too.

No I will be proud to be known as a Mini Painter and not an \"Artist\"

Evil Dave...you\'re a smoker...and a serious art \"critic\"...a man after my own heart! :D

these mindless cattles (to those people who fall within this category - oh don\'t get offended but hey, they will not be caught dead in these forum so what the heck lol ) are just following the trends. basically, they don\'t know anything about what they luv or hate...they\'re so spineless that they can kiss their personal asses.

dave, i have a similar ex-gf years ago. things like those you mentioned are oh so classy to them. people reading this, i am not bitter...i\'ve come to accept the horrific truth of these lemmings (that\'s after i played the game). things that we do, are so barbaric and childish...a local term in my country as \"so beng\" or unrefined. well, i went with her to a art gallery years ago and this local artist was like SLAPPING paint on the canvas...people applauded for his ingenuity. i laughed and was promptly stared down. no prize for guessing that look of disgust on her face....lol

well, to those arty farty people, get a grip on yourself. if using your well-endowed ass to make imprints on paper is art, i don\'t know what you\'re call those who do it with their p*#is. lollol

As for the stripe painting, and how something like that can be called \"art\" or even be sold, see below.

Gvoice.jpg

What you\'re seeing is a painting called Voice of Fire, by an American artist named Barnett Newman. I saw this painting in person in the art gallery in Ottawa, and let me tell you that it\'s big. And that\'s about it. How much did the gallery spend on this heap of (artistic) crap? Only about 1.76 million freakin dollars!! :|~

Honestly, I don\'t understand it at all, but that\'s art for you. As for being called an artist, I think it would be an honour so long as I\'m not associated with the blue-blooded crew of weirdos that you encounted, Evil Dave. I think it would be a great compliment that someone thinks enough of my works to call me an artist.

Meh.:|~

1.76 freaking millions for THIS?!?!?

good lord...i shudder to comtemplate the magnitude of mankind\'s regression in the state of evolution. to think that i took months to write programs that benefits the local community and earn a meagre sum out of it....oh why didn\'t my parents taught me how to draw LINES!! :(

I have a friend who attends Tulane, who told me of a lecture given to his art class by an \" artist \". Well this guy\'s claim to fame is a mirror............ that he masturbated on and affixed with a pane of clear glass.

He called it \" Self Portrait \". :|~

I personally think that art is SOOO much more than something that invokes emotion or imagination. I mean to be totally honest a brutal triple homicide invokes the imagination of those who must investigate it.... Is this Art? Some might say yes. But then again those some might be long over due for a lobotomy.

Art is about a work of skill and imagintion which invokes imagination and emotion on the part of both artist and beholder.

ANYONE can paint a blue line down the center of the canvas. It takes no skill, no imagination, no emotion. And those whose emotions or imaginations that are invoked there of are daft as an out-house rat.

I do not think I could ever call myself an artist for fear that I might be associated with these kinds of imbeciles.

This is also most of the reason I havenever attended an \" art college \". I mean really, there is no way to teach someone how to become an artist. There fore I think that \" art colleges \" are just a institutions for huffed up elitists who think WAY too highly and too often of themselves.

I FART in your general direction!!

Ok, here\'s a couple of art horror story\'s from my days at SWTSU -

1. Buddy of mine was taking an art class and the class had some pieces on display in the art building, so I went to take a look and review it for the school paper - the theme was Self Portrature - and I see this amazing collection of, well to put it nicely, crap. Nothing that looks remotely like the human form, except my buddy\'s piece, which is hidden in a corner like the gallery manager was embarassed to have it on display. Pride of position was given to a truck mud flap smeared with mud and pastel chalks. When I asked what the hell it was supposed to be other than a stand for recycling, the manager stormed off in a huff, never to come over and answer any more questions from the \"barbarian\" with \"no capacity to understand art\". To me there was no emotional impact from the work, there was no tie in - hell, I\'ve seen my dog make more artistic messes raiding the cabinet tops.

2. While hanging out at the paper one day, we heard the fire alarm go off in the art building next door. Being as we were all journalistic hacks with a nose for news (and, lets face it it was a really slow day) those of us just hanging around grabbed cameras and recording devices and shovels, and rakes, and hoes and other implements of destruction and headed for the action - I mean the breaking news, about 10 yards away. Turns out what happened was one of the ceramics students was trying some Japanese technique of firing pottery in a garbage can full of smoldering straw, and wanted to be able to watch it, but didnt want to have to stand outside to watch her project, so she used the can to prop open one of the doors to the building, and couldnt understand when the smoke was drawn into the building, thus setting off the smoke alarms. But, as she said, it was the University\'s fault for \"Not providing the proper facilities for her to work in,\" not her fault for propping open a door with a trash can full of smoldering hay.

And people wonder why I prefer the title Hack to artist.

:D

Yeah. I\'m an art student, and I can\'t stand \'art\' at all. All this pretention and bullshit, the little food buffets at an exhibit where a naked girl counts her freckles, or the ass with a $300 outfit sits there and explains his work to you, makes me want to vomit. If you look at it and you actually like it, just by looking at it, then it is good. The idea that it has to be innovative is such crap. I don\'t care if nobody has counted their freckles before, and you know why? Because it is F------ stupid! That\'s why. :flip::bouncy:

I believe firmly in what I think is an ITalian concept. You may be a painter, a sculptor, a whatever, but you are not an artist until your work has stood the test of time. 100 years after you\'re dead, you MAY become an artist.

The most corrupting influence on art is government money. IF Malcolm Forbes, Donald Truump, Bill Gates, etc wish to spend large piles of thier cash on some literal pile of shiste, that\'s fine. I do not choose to do so, so take the government money out of this please.

HOwever, in defense of a field of study I dearly love: Horror stories abound in the art world as to incredible wastes of money. HOwever, please don\'t single it out. Have you ever seen the kinds of huge money the goverment gives to \"scientists\" to do \"important studies\" on things that are absolutely obvious or positively meaningless? YOOu know what would happen if you challenged those scientists? They\'dlook at you, shake their heads and declare that \"You just don\'t get it\". This also applies (perhaps even more so) to the \"Social Sciences\" Once again, the corrupting influence is government money. I wouldn\'t give a damn if they werrent\' using MY money for these things.

AND (my we seem to have come up with some of my favorite hot buttons) I\'d like to counter the arguement about not being able to teach people to be artists. YOu are very right. What Art schools should, and mostly do, do is provide instruction in use of materials and concepts and the history of Art. NOt unlike any other part of a college. Teaching a student physics won\'t insure that they will become a brilliant physicist. Teaching some one how to play piano won\'t make them Van Cliburn. Teaching someone the techniques of writing won\'t make them Mark Twain. Teaching someone the basis and history behind the law, won\'t insure that they will be a great legal mind.

Yes, many people in the arts are pompous, arogant, self-absorbed fonies. I found them exceedingly annoying to deal with. Then again, I find Lots of people exceedingly annoying to deal withlol I\'m not sure they have a monoploy on that.
