Thats my scale also - the GF and I were in Hobby Lobby over the weekend looking at art and talking about what would be acceptable on the walls and what would not.
Nope - as far as painted art goes, I tend towards either paleolithic art (cave paintings, rock drawings, etc) or late 19th early 20th century artists - none of that modern art or pop art crap in my house, thank you very much - although I do like the ocassional piece of advertising art if it was done properly.
As for photography, we have six large pieces taken by the GF\'s grandfather on the walls of the apartment - 2 of the New York Opera house at night, one of the MOMA, and three ships - the France, the Leonardo Da Vinci, and the Onassis Yacht. The next photographs to go up will be some of mine, and then when I get the time and the equipment I\'ve got 60 yrs of large format negatives to sort for printing - all of them pre 9-11 shots of the NYC area dating back to the 1930\'s. Oh, and the one I\'m willing to kill for is a picture of Duke Ellington the GF\'s grandfather took in Central Park - its going up as soon as I get the room on the walls, and get it to Texas from NYC.
