oistene's WIP - a mostly dead space

Almost done with the skin, not as easy as I thought, think I should have done a different order and minded my glazes more. Need to tweak a bit, but I'm almost there. Hope to get it down tonight (provided I have time to paint).

Thanks all - I did as you suggested, Tim, added just a little blood effect to make it seem nasty, without being bloody. I call these guys done now, I think they turned out all right considering the mess I had to start with.

On to new projects! I got myself a Deathjack and a unit of Soulhunters ready. Did the first round of paint-tossing Saturday night.

The Soulhunters will be very straightforward, simple base coat, shading, highlight and wham - table top. For Deathjack, I'm going to try to do some weird stuff with the airbrush. I've sealed him and left him for two days now, will try to mask and airbrush later today. No liquid mask this time.

The Death jack looks great with that metal work so far oistene. Your confidence with different painting techniques has grown since I first "met" you and it is shining through in the quality of your newer pieces. Go you!

Thanks for the praise, Arch - though Deathjack has just gotten a quick base with airbrush at that point. I tried to do fancy stuff with him, but it failed. I'll explain it further once I continue working on him, hopefully tonight. I do try to use the airbrush more - I also have some techniques that are completely new to me that I intend to test in the next couple of months, so stay tuned. I do like to stay inside my comfort zone, but I think I am rapidly approaching the point where I won't get any better until I try new things.

I've had some lazy days, pretty much only doing a bit of modelling, but I did get a base coat on the Soulhunters and put a wash on them. Took a BIG session with them last night, putting in all the shades before dinner then working the highlights once mini was in bed. Almost managed to get it all done before bedtime. The metals still need some work, and I'll do some extreme highlights to indicate the lighting, but these are in the very last stages now.

It struck me as I was doing highlights how COOL these minis are. They have so many details, particularly in the horse part of their bodies. I've taken care to pop out all the bones, flesh and so on that are visible where the skin has ripped, and I am pretty happy with the result. I tried some new stuff on the weapons (blue black wash), and I wasn't happy with it, so those will need a little extra effort.

I normally hate painting horses, because you not only need to finish the rider but also the horse. (In fact this was one of the reasons behind my chosing of the skaven at WHFantasy) xD But in this case you got both things in one, aren't they like zombie centaurs? I like the colours you have chosen for them, and all those bones, flesh and muscles it is a lot of work.
They are looking GREAT. I maybe, miss some splashes of blood here and there to bring a little bit of "freshness" to them, or maybe you already have planned that but leaving it for the future?

Looking good. I think some gore may add to them.

My comment on your personal progress was meant to be in a separate paragraph to the Deathjack feedback. I was talking about your painting and hobbying in general, not just that specific model. :)

Thanks a lot, all! As for the gore, I don't really like to add bloody weapons and the like to my gaming miniatures, the way I see it, I want them painted as I imagine that they'll look when entering the battlefield. Since most warriors won't arrive bloody, I only add blood if the mini really calls for it. And these guys... really call for it. :) Once I finish painting, I seal my minis with gloss. After glossing, I add pigments, base elements and similar effects, before I seal again with matte. Once that is done, I add blood, slime, glow - anything that needs to keep a little shine. I've added layer two of the gloss now, so it is time to add blood once I am back home from my job interview.

Maenas - not only are they zombie centaurs - they are zombie CYBORG centaurs. :D

Gandalf - you are not wrong. I admit to getting more than a little inspiration and having learned more than a few tricks from BAM. His way of painting suits the way I like to paint. Also, I did think that these would both be something he'd enjoy to paint, and something that'd look good if he did them.

Arch - then I just say thanks a lot! I've had no eureka moments of late, but I have been pretty pleased with my results. I think it basically come from getting a lot of practise and many finished projects done these last months.

Krule - they are from Warmachine by Privateer Press. Pretty much everything I paint these days is Warmachine, since I currently paint for gaming.

Darth and Diggs - appreciate the praise!

Those soul hunters look amazing. Really good job creating a subtle distinction between the rotten flesh and bone underneath. The green glow and splattering of gore is a nice touch too :)

Wow they look great! I'd be happy to field those into battle. I think you get more done in a few weeks than I get done in a few months ;)
