oistene's WIP - a mostly dead space

'Tis nothing! Hit that area with some pinks, purples and flesh type tones to make it look like scarring from an old wound and then apply powders to the base and feet :)

It is probably fixable. Hope to be able to finish it this weekends, in the meantime I'm mass producing zombies. Also, I've started on a non-gaming commission piece, this:

My fiance commissioned this. Not a bad sculpt, though I find it a bit lacking in detail. I'm going a bit out of my comfort zone here and using oil based paints, and I got some new brushes for the job too, can't ruin my regular ones with the oil. The customer chose the color, I would personally have gone for something bolder... I asked what color she wanted in the highlights, but she just rolled her eyes - any input on this?

Well, it was sort of pre-primed. I think it wasn't proper primer, but stripping it down was too much work, and the layer was nice and smooth, so I decided to go right at it.

Yeas I know your pain. I had a basement remodel commission after some flooding a few years ago. I like the use negative space between the treads ;)

With the commission out of the way, I could concentrate on finishing the Morgaur. No, I will not risk the wrath of the moderators by uploading pictures of the commission piece to the gallery...

Got a short session last night, but enough to nearly finish the monster - I need to do a bit more repairs on the leg I messed up (I tried Zab's suggestion of turning it into a wound, but I couldn't make it float, so I made it green again). My painting is random and inconsistent, which gets me into trouble when I have to re-do stuff like this. I just have to tweak it until it looks right... also, I get impatient and want to be good right away, which makes it even harder.

Only remains to seal it, and then add some slime, some gloss to the eyes. I also got some water effects from Secret Weapon in the mail, I'll add that to the buckets to make them look a bit more interesting. All in all, I'm very pleased - I like my own colors far better than the box art, I've learned a bunch of stuff and pushed my limits far. Once it is fully done, this one is going into the gallery.

Next in line are these three sexy gentlemen:

These are for the Dark Age contest (yeah, I better hurry!). Still researching what colors I want, and the bases for them are still in the mail, so I hope I can find enough painting time to get them done.

Wickedly, creepily, great man. I love the colors and it just looks all around cool. I like the other models your getting ready for the contest too.

Thanks a bunch, guys. Now to my never-ending challenge: Finding painting time! Found a little today and started throwing on some base coat, nothing worth showing yet, though.

Okay, how I am going to finish three models in one week with the limited painting time I have, I do not know! Anyway, they'll be done if they are done, if they aren't they won't be entered into the contest. I refuse to enter anything I'm not happy with. Currently, I hope to finish at least one, and I'm having fun.

During my struggles to repair the Morgaur, I realized something: I'm too unstructured, and most of the time I can't remember what colors I used yesterday, much less remember several mixes and layers several weeks later. So I've started to write everything down, and most of it I'll share here. So, here is the current progress on the Dark Age guys, along with my worknotes:

Mandible is a nice and simple model, so he is first candidate to be rush-finished if I have to. At this point, I'm done shading his flesh. I've used GW Nurgling Green as a base, applied a generous VMC Umber Shade and then neated up the Umber to make the darkest recesses more defined. After this, I tried shading with a VMC Russian Green glaze, to add another nuance of shade. However, this didn't turn out the way I intended AT ALL. However, it gave him a mossy swampthing-like look, which I found really fitting, so I am keeping this. Some simple highlights now, and the flesh is done.

Numbskull is also fairly simple - though I assembled him the way the parts best fit, which I regret now, as a more upright pose would be more picture-friendly. Well, I'll thank myself later when he does NOT fall apart during gaming later. I painted 'normal' flesh on him first - GW Rakarth Flesh as base, then VMC Flesh Shade, some VMC Umber Shade for the darkest places, then touched up everything with a thin layer of 50/50 Rakarth and GW Pallid Wytch Flesh. Finally, I added another 50% Pallid Wytch to the mix, and added a very thin layer of that. The plan is to turn it inhuman with purple glazes next.

The shell is based with GW Jokaero Orange, next step is to cover this completely with GW Balor Brown.

Finally, Mean Jellybean. Shading and light is still something I haven't grasped, and I simply didn't take the time to practice it here... Instead I painted on instinct, aiming to make it pop instead of being fully realistic. I have a bunch of Malifaux minis to paint later, those have lots of cloth and leather instead of weird alien skin, so I can use to practice light and shadow. While I see that my highlights are off, I'm pretty happy with how they look. It's babysteps all the way...

This is a very neat model, and probably what would be coolest to enter into the contest if there just had been time. His flesh is VMA Sand Yellow, shaded with VMC Sepia Shade. It was then touched up with GW Balor Brown, which I added more and more VMC Iraqui Sand to (started at about 50/50), and finally I added VMC Ivory until the final highlights were pure Ivory.

I'm considering if I want to take the highlights a bit down and give the flesh a little more glow by adding a layer of GW yellow glaze, or if I should keep it as is.

Shell is GW Tallarn Sand, going to give that a tint of green, much like I did with Mandible. The armour will become a dark purple.

Oistene that cthulhu thing is amazing bud..yeah if your going to weather an organic piece jut don't add the silver add a lighter color bleached bone etc onto the rhino hide that should work or just highlight the bottom part of the marks that the sponge leaves...very nice piece.

I think I'll apply that quite liberally on these guys, BAM... all of them will look good with some degree of weathering. Thanks again for the input.

And Digg, I can tell that you like the monstrous stuff... :)

The Morgraur is looking pretty epic. I love the color choices, and I agree the dual color looks better than the box art's single color. The Dark Age minis are shaping up nicely as well.

Thanks for the praise, fluisterwoud. :)

Stress stress stress...

Got a lot done yesterday. I try to get a bit of painting done in the mornings while waiting for the kids to get ready, I only get 20-30 minutes but it is enough for some simple work and perfect for anything that need to dry afterwards. So I gave Numbskull's flesh a round with GW Purple Shade:

He'll need a lot of neatening up and better highlights, but I am pleased with the unnatural, almost sickly look of the skin. Makes it clean that this isn't a human. It is a very simple model, so it needs some tricks with the color to be interesting... a big thanks to everyone who pushed me to use 'strange' colors for shading on the Morgaur! Those lessons really come in handy now.

Tuesday night is painting night, so I got a fair deal done. I pretty much put aside everything except Mandible, since I see it is getting less and less likely that I can finish all three. Since I was home alone with nobody to bother with the smell, I primed up the bases for the guys:

attachment.php

The big one is for Numbskull, and is the one he came with. Just added a few rocks, sticks and some dirt to it. While finishing up the priming, I realized that I had forgotten to seal the dirt, so I had to do that post-priming - I hope that didn't mess it up too much. Simple, easy base, and I'll probably have that done in less than an hour.

The other two are from Secret Weapon, and are way cool. MJB gets the swamp one, while Mandible gets the one with the corrupted vegetation. The latter has a lot of great detail, I'm really looking forward to painting it, it is a miniature in itself. The former is simpler, but I intend to add to it and I think it should be the best of the three - also, the most time consuming, so it will probably not be done in time.

The rest of my time was focused on Mandible:

And I realized that I have misplaced my notes... This is why I want to record everything here; I did this last night, and I am already starting to forget which colors I used. :p

Highlights on the flesh are 50/50 Nurgling Green and VMC Iraqui Sand, added a bit more Iraqui for each layer, before moving on to VMC Ivory for the last few layers.

Shell is GW Baneblade Brown (I think), shaded with GW Druchii Violet shade.

Claws are VMC Iraqui Sand, shaded with VMC Sepia Shade. They are not done, need to deepen the shadows and highlight.

Flesh is nearly done - I want to add a thin red glaze, and maybe some GW Waywatcher Green glaze to make it 'shine'. Should I push the highlights up one more step? The brightest ones are VMC Ivory and GW Nurgling Green, with a bit more Ivory than green. Should I pull it all the way to pure ivory, or even white?

I half way highlighted the shell this morning, no picture, unfortunately. Neated it up with more Baneblade, and added highlights in GW Karak Stone (got a touch of Baneblade in it, not much).

Of course, forgot something - before the purple, I hit the shell with a wash of VMC Umber Shade - this is why I keep notes, guys! The umber gets pretty dull and spotty, particularly when applied liberally, but creates a great darker base for other colors like the purple. Once touched up, it looks clean again.
