Hey oistene since you are back i am posting my lighting set up I promised
So you got one light over head in the back not directly on top of the mini, 2 on the side like 45 degree and one in the front behind the camera.
Use a tripod!!! With a cable or timer, don't touch camera
From dennis: "at the slowest f stop your camera has, say f16, 22, etc, expose at aperture priority. take 6 shots, -1 stop (underexposed), -2/3 stop, -1/3 stop, central evaluative stop, +1/3 sto, +2/3 stop, you should get the perfect shot, if colour calibration is wrong redo your white balance"

Thanks a lot, Tero - that looks both simple and good! I think I'll try to pick up one good and one or two cheap lamps - I need at least one more for painting as well. In addition, I'll swing by IKEA and see if they have one of the semi-transparent waste buckets, maybe I can make a lightbox.
The camera is a concern - we only have a compact my fiance bought for reasons unknown (I'm pretty sure her phone is just as good, if not better). I might see if I can get one with the capabilities I need used - or settle for using my iPad. I don't want to spend a lot of money on a camera, particularly as I want an airbrush and have a wedding to plan.
Tonight, however, I will shop for better brushes. Maybe (finally) make a wet pallete.

That's some nice mouth drippage there, I like the yellowish tint too, it's a good compliment to the pink mouth and green skin.

ten - I've seen that, and it looks great, but I can't buy uhu here, would have to find a substitute. Also, it adds a bit of complexity and frailty I didn't want at this point. I was more comfortable with the simple approach, and I wanted colored slime, not drool. However, now that I mastered this approach, I'll give the slime strings a go later.

Heh heh, I got it Canny - I used to run a toy store, so I know LPS pretty well, but never saw anything resembling this guy!
They are about to ship their Kickstarter in the next couple of months, Epic, and should have a restock after that. I see CMoN still have some of their stuff, though.
Will do, BAM - going to see if I can get a good photo setup first, so don't hold your breath!
Dave is taking sloooowly shape. No a lot to show off yet, just some splashes of paint. I need a bit of help, though. He is carrying a molotov cocktail in each hand, and I want the bottles green, as I think that will look best. But I don't really know how to paint glass of any color. Anyone care to give me a step by step on how to paint glass?

Okay guys, look who's taken the plunge! No more cheap brushes for me:
Or, that is, I'll still have my cheap brushes, and likely use them a lot... but this is what will do my main work.
Realized last night that between being on vacation and being sick, there is no way I can finish Dave at the level I want to by the 28th. So instead, I'll hand him in to the contest as-is, and carry on at my own speed. Still feeling the belly-flu that afflicted me, so yesterday wasn't my best work, but I got some work done:
As you see, I am no better at producing pictures. I guess I have to step up and get some more lamps and maybe that light box... I assume that there's also some crap in my phone's lens, but my main suspicion is that 90% of the fault is between the camera and the chair.
Either way, I've basically just done basecoats here. Gave his pants a couple of washes and that's pretty much it.

in ally a guy that understands those should be for detail and things and get yourself Raphael kaerell synthetic round for 2 brush blending this way you don't kill your series seven WN .the sizes for the Raphael are 2 (to absorb and lay down the ball of diluted paint) @ 3 (to feather out the paint at its edge). Good thing bout the papal synthetic is they have more tiny reservoirs per strand so they hold wet paint "wet" longer so great for blending.but you can use the series seven for everything ,just keep em clean with some brush soap.after each use.

Your guy is looking good there. It seems there isn't a whole lot of detail going on in the mini, but you're still making it pop. Excellent work.

Okay, tried a few shot with my iPad instead of the phone, at varying distances. No better. The best I got was by turning the light right at him. This is better, closer to reality - it seems like I placed highlights on the bottles already though, which I did not.
So the culprit is the lighting in my office. I need better lights, and I need it soon.

Thanks Moe - it is getting lighter. I noticed daylight at five o'clock yesterday, and managed to take some pictures. It looks a LOT better - going to take a look at the light situation tonight, and head out and shop for lamps tomorrow. My light isn't really good enough to work by either, I compensate by having good eyes, eating lots of carrots and taking the minis into different rooms to look at them a lot.
This is what Dave looked like when I threw in the towel for the contest. He's still got a loooong way to go, but I'll finish him. Added a nice little gas can I got off Shapeways, it suits his game mechanics. Unsure if I should make some litter on the base to go with the gas can, or if that will clutter it.
