this isnt as unusual as it might seem - cloning green flourescent protein (gfp) in to organisms has been in practice for a long time (1960\'s):
these genes that prouce florescent proteins are typically used as a sort of experimental control. the gfp gene is typically attached to a gene of intrest (something being researched, either naturally occuring or cloned in) as a reporter so that it is easy to determine if the target gene is present (and expressed), where it might otherwise be difficult or expensive to determine. its quite useful really and fairly common/cheep/mundane. the media reports on this every year or so like its a new technique when its actually common place.
either way its an osl project begging to happen.
p.s. the flourescent proteins come in all the colors of the rainbow, the cats could just as easily have been purple.
