Nice improvment with yrret\'s picture. I might just send him all those nasty looking picture of my minis to see if he can turn them in 8+ material :p I would probably give a 7,5 to your mini, the sword does bring it down a bite.

Just goes to show when this gets 6.6....In my eye its easy 8.The painting on the face is excellent. The rest is great but for the change in tone on the sword blade.I agree though about the backdrop,So easy to do and such an improvement.

Honestly brian the paintjob looked sloppy to me and I vote with patience.

I\'ll open the page look at the mini and hover over the rating I first felt it deserved..

Then I look at:

1. quality of the blends
2. how well the metal was done(I rate nnm and MM the same it is all dependant on execution)
3. if you do base work I see if that is apropriate for the mini
4. I look hard to see if there is conversion work
5. I read any description given.
6. I look at how creative you are.. if the paintjob is the exact one on the box of the mini I drop a score point.
7. I look at brush controll. As in If you are sloppy or you make careless strokes.
8. truthfull depiction of things.. I.E. whether you have the core of a flame white or red.. flames ARE brighter in the center.

I gave your orc a 5. Even with the conversion work it didn\'t really strike me as all that much. The paintjob looked like there was little effort to controll your brush. Places that if you took a few more minutes he would be a good mini.

Now, I have noticed these things here:
#1. SENMM and NMM get about 1 point higher the MM here.
#2 people here LOVE good base work, me I am indiferent but if you do base work go all the way.
#3 people like high contrast stuff. Someone like me who likes drab colors is an odd thing so drab blends even when apropriate are going to get you 1 point of most of the time.
#4 people who are more popular around here get higher rankings. not enough to get them higher then 9 though.
#5 some people throw fits if you say negative stuff about their work. THEY CAN AND WILL rate you lower out of spite.
#6 sadly naked women tend to get higher ratings.

I hope all this helps brian

Me my current goal is to get a mini voted to an 8. I think I can do it. but I want to do it out of hard work. my freinds all wanted to rate my stuff as 8 or 9.. I told them vote honets. You have to look at the big niners here there are some REALLY talented people here. Don\'t get me wrong some of the bigger names here can get 8s on stuff that deserves a 5. However, the 9 and ups are not as easily aquired. Personaly I see this as a chance to disscuss and perfect mini painting in a community of artists. I love this site.

If you go back and put some more work on that orc you will get higher. At the moment he looks like the average slab of lead on the table top. Don\'t let that happen PUSH the medium. He could be a great peice. :)

How does voting work?

I\'m not much of a mathematician, but I am a little bit anal. When I posted my second and last mini I lurked a bit waiting for votes here is what I noticed but I may be wrong.
vote 1 6.0 (being a newbie I didn\'t change this initial score)
Vote 2 a 7 (therefore 6+7=13 /2 for the mean = 6.5)
vote 3 The score drops to a 5.2 (wait a minute lets do the maths 6+7+x=15.6 /3=5.2 therfore what is x ? x=2.6 an impossible and horribly low score in a single vote)
So I speculated that in fact the maths goes something like 6.5+x=10.4/2 therefore x=3.9 so taking into account that second decimal points are still there as roundings this could be a 4 harsh granted but it skews the mini\'s rating horribly what it should have been was 6+7+4=17/3 =5.6)
Therefore early low votes disproportionately skew the voting.
This is still in theory form and I will bow to those who actually know how it works better than I.

Incidentally @darthfoley I not only like your mini but like it more each time I view it, it is subtle and brilliantly charactered. :)

Well, I thank you for that, Greymane. :)

The low votes in the early going is something that has been discussed before - Finn can probably find the thread. :) Basically, there\'s a \'catch\' in place that will toss out any votes that are \'substantially out of line\' with the tendency on a mini. Unfortunately, that algorithm doesn\'t kick in until the mini is past 50 votes. So if you have, say, an 8 average with 10 votes and you get a 2 vote, down you go. If you\'re at an 8 average with 70 votes and you get a 2, it gets tossed.

So, yes, early low scores can kill you quickly. Of course, I suppose early high scores can help you ride a wave for a while - I wouldn\'t know anything about the latter from experience, though. :) lol

Update

First thanks again to everyone who posted. Paticularly Smoth, I\'ll remember to paint more naked ladies in the future. :D

Second, I removed one of the pictures I linked to in the beginning of this thread. I may put a new one up, or maybe not, who knows?

On a happier note, one of my new posts has reached the 5.0 ranking mark! It\'s kinda embarrassing that it\'s a rank and file grunt and not one of my character models, but oh well.. lol

A little constructive critisim here

Your Gruumsh is lacking a bit in the details department. I\'d suggest doing a little shadeing or even going over the skin with some GW green ink. I think it\'s a good conversion, but it just needs a little work on the painting.
