Great stuff! Nice to see a classic that is well done.

I do have to disagree with everyone about the crystals, though. While they are painted amazing (I had to check the WIP to see if they were clear plastic or painted), they distract the eye away from the mini. They are just a bit large. I also think the flesh could be shaded deeper, and I think the eyes painted a red-yellow fade with a cat-like pupil would be sweet.

@ JakeSh - So far as the flesh and the eyes, do you mean something along these lines?

I was trying a different, purple-based color scheme on the Patriarch and wanted more of a glowing eye effect, but I can definitely agree that the eyes as they currently stand could maybe use blending into a different color and the skin definitely needs \"something,\" I\'m just not sure exactly what - whether continue working to a lighter faded highlight color (per the picture above) or adding in some shading of a different, darker color, or even, like with my Orcus figure, a wash of contrasting colors entirely to \"bleach\" things out a little more.

(The reason I didn\'t go for a similar scheme to the picture I posted is that I didn\'t want to paint 2 things in roughly the same style consecutively... I started with a base on the Patriarch using Purple Ink, but decided that was too dark and so things ended up where they\'re at now.)

Anyone have any other suggestions on potential improvements/adjustments to make it a little more GW painting competition entry-worthy?

I agree that the eyes could do with a little extra, maybe if you made them stand out with an interesting colour they would work better; I\'m not sure about the flesh, but maybe you could try a wash of a darker colour only in the recesses where it meets the armour plates, to add a bit more contrast. Maybe a red, to distinguish a bit from the plates.

As for the base, maybe just something simple like this: http://www.coolminiornot.com/129433. Or even just static grass. Or you could sculpt a small creature :innocent:

If you wanted to add any Tyranid gooey-sporey kinda stuff, I think it\'d be fairly easy to just sculpt some tubey things, or add small amounts of slime using glue or whatever, something like this but on a small scale: http://www.coolminiornot.com/1783.

Don\'t overload the base to much though, just add a little more interest! :D And by all means, ignore everything I\'ve said - I\'ve never painted a \'nid in my life lol

Ahhh... yes... eyes along those lines. I think it would look really good with the purple of the skin. I really like that mini a lot, by the way.

Well, I appreciate the suggestions, as I\'ve been feeling that there\'s been something kinda \"lacking\" in the overall appearance of the base and while they do have a pale yellow glow, the eyes have seemed kinda flat.

To that end, I added a bit more definition to the eyes, gave the skin a \"bleaching\" glaze and added two more sets of highlights with an even higher concentration of white this time around to try and making the contrast between the shading and the rest of the skin color more stark, and I, um, got medieval on the base...

It\'s never really came across as the \"alien moon landscape\" I was hoping for and despite the crystals has kinda been a dull grey gravel otherwise. I decided I\'d try and make it look like he was prowling the scene after a battle between IG/SM\'s the rest of the Genestealers/Tyranids he\'s accompanying.

This is where you guys come in:

By all means, please pick it to pieces here! I\'d like to enter this for the upcoming GW 40K painting competition in the local stores and want as solid a figure as I can turn in. (I\'ve never attended a Golden Demon before and want to try and get this looking as good as possible, figgering it\'d be a good learning experience.)

awesome looks great with the blood. kind of weird having blood only on the tip of the tongue and on the ground but none caked on anywhere else. the effect of the blood is great though. oh and the crystals look well like real crystal:idea: dang that sounded dumb. the new eyes look better i think if he had pupils they might get lost in the mix. great work.

Honestly I still think you could really benefit from some glazes around the little warts and stuff on him. Probably the eyes and mouth too. Green/blue/purple/red/whatever would add some more contrast and variety I think.

Nice! You got the skin carapace done well...IIRC, that model has alot of folds and crevasses, making for few solid surface or clean lines to work with for layering up...nicely done!

Like your claws too, a good change from the usual light gclaw scheme.
