Outrage at "pro-painted" minis on ebay

eBay can be fickle, depends who's around when the auction is due to finish, get lucky and have a couple of people who REALLY want a particular piece and see the price rocket, or get one guy who'd pay a ton bidding against others who won't means the price stays lower than what it could potentially reach, to point out the absolute obvious! :D

The guys work that was linked in OP, he's probly doing it about right in terms of quality vs price vs quantity, his work is clean, solid and a distance above average (imo) and the price tags aren't really that high, his market is going to be bigger and include alot of average joe who'd pay those prices for nice mini's, rather than having a fraction of the mini's at uber display quality a handful of people will pay out the arse for if you get lucky. Nothing wrong with advertising as professionally painted if that's what he wants to do, as essentially painting is his profession, he's doing something right with his feedback/sales rate so more power to the guy, my observation at any rate :)

First of all..define "Pro"...if the person or team of painters successfully and consistantly sell thier work on ebay or other venues then it can be said that they are "Pro" or "Professional" since they are in the "profession" of painting and selling Miniatures on Ebay. That being said it sure as heck doesnt make them "expert" or masterful painters at the craft.
Secondly some painters have a devoted client base that watch every auction that a particular painter posts and bid against each other for that persons mini. That drives the price up in some instances. So don't be so quick to condemn these people they are doing what a small base of clients want.

Personally, I LIKE the bright clean style! I think they're neat. I can definitely see why someone would want to buy them for gaming, since they would stand out on the table top. You could have a model rated 9 on this site that was out of place on table top due to colour choices and subtlety of style.

Not saying I would pay his prices by any means since I can paint myself, but I definitely appreciate what he's done and why people like it.

As for people not knowing what a great painted mini is, I showed my work to a friend recently, commenting that my standards are improving and I can't wait till I break through to be world class (fingers crossed), and my friend said 'But I don't see how they could get any better?' He's a pretty intelligent guy as well. I think people don't all have the same appreciation for art. Look at all the idiots on X Factor etcetera who get loads of support even when their singings way off.

They have such sappy/happy light.

Not a big fan of Kinkade's painting............but I definitely agree on milking that puppy for all it's worth. Can't fault him on that. For being 'the painter of light', his light needs work.

LOL, agreed. Although to be fair, given how it sells, probably not in reality; if his work were actually better (e.g. of a higher standard of realism) there's little doubt it wouldn't be as popular.

About that stupid "painter of light" moniker (marketing genius though it might be) I've read comments from artists a few times rightly making fun of it - well what are all the other painters painting?

How can you be outraged? In my opinion I think mini's should sell for more on eBay, when you think about it the price for the mini, paints, brushes, supplies, and time some times the profit doesn't come out so well. Even if they are table top quality, the majority of the army's Ive faced/seen were so bad/unpainted and not even close to table top quality i didn't want to dishonor my army. His prices do seem high and im not sure how hes selling them but i sure wish i could sell mine for that. just my two cents :)

Well, I have some figures lined up that will be destined for ebay and was planning to slap some paint on, in some kind of organised way of course. I have every intention of labelling the auction as "pro painted" simply because if people search for that term, then obviously i need to use it in the auction to improve hits. The difference is I will word it "pro - painted to a high tabletop standard" to accurately reflect the actual quality of the work. People will see the work for what it is, so really the only time to ever get angry at people using pro painted in their auction descriptions is when they are delusional and have painted figures to a 5/10 standard and think the figures they have produced are the best thing since sliced bread. I was considering labelling my auction "Pro Painted to a fairly nice looking, ok-ish standard. Certainly not bad and certainly better than many other auctions of space marines on here...." bit long winded though.
