Outrage at "pro-painted" minis on ebay

I've always wondered about the whole market for "pro painted" minis.

Back in the day (early 90's) I was considered a great painter, I was definitely one of the best in my area (even though the mini's I painted back then, are mere gaming quality to today's standards). For two years I had a table selling my work at a local convention and doing custom work at that convention. And the amount I could get for my best stuff was almost enfuriating. At most I could get double the price of an unpainted fig, even when I had put HOURS of work into them.

At the time a metal Terminator was about 6 dollars I think, and the most I could get for my best painted terminator was 12 dollars.

Then I went to Gen con in... oh I think it was 1994, and found whole booths of painted minis, that were just short of crappy, selling for 30 dollars each! (or at least priced at 30 dollars, I never saw anyone buy them)

After my second year trying to sell my work (1995) at my local convention, and getting people scoffing at my apparently cheap prices like I was over-charging, I gave up on the whole thing, and decided not to try to work for money any more.

That plus the fact that I have yet to meet anyone at a gaming table who doesn't paint their own army (or just plays an unpainted army)..... I just figured that no one actually buys painted minis. I guess things have changed?

I can't see getting angry at this. If one can paint better than this guy in Canada, then that's great.
Looking at his "completed listings' he's just made a nice buck, or whatever Canandians call 'em. And, he's got over two thousand transactions at 100% satisfaction....so good for him. Why the outrage; I don't get it.
It should be a springboard for those who feel they are better to go out and get some of his customers. They are obviously out there, big time.
Sure, some of his prices would require deep mental problems for anyone to pay what he's asking, IMO...but you never know...you just never know.
I write this from experience...

I've been away for a while so this thread is a great reintroduction to the CMON community for me. All the basics are here, except maybe "how do i do nmm?" ;)

Add me to the list of people who can't imagine making any money by painting. That geisha posted upthread (despite looking very "Crying Game", LOL) is a pretty decent paint job, and selling it for $60 is not remotely unreasonable. If I painted that and it sold for $30, I'd feel like I'd wasted my time, because it would have taken at least a couple of hours of work, and I could make $10/hr flipping burgers! Sure, it's maybe a 6-7 here, but it's miles above what a lot of people are capable of painting, so if they want it, they might certainly pay that much.

Man... I am SO tempted to let the painter in question know this thread is going on. He's what you'd call.... exciteable. I think this would be just the thing for him!

This may have been said already but I interpret the whole "pro-painted" title not so much meaning high quality, but meaning mainly that whoever said painter is paints as their profession.

i think the comments are a little harsh, he's not a bad bad painter, he's better and a lot of people selling 'pro-painted' on ebay but he's not amazing, table-top standard i would say. this however is reflected in the prices, i personally use only 'chest of colors' who are a world class commission painting service, one woman 'Ana' has won loads of contests such as golden daemon, hussar and such. i fact she had silver and a few other top places in this years hussar and one of there artists won gold. she is not the only golden daemon winner either but heres the difference, where mentioned ebay seller charges $75-$90 a pop for single models chest of colors i pay around $150-$180 a pop for a level 4 job which is the highest standard they do, for those that want to know what its like there is only two words i need 'awe-inspiring' and thats being conservative. Mind you the world famous 'Ana' is considerably more expensive, were talking hundreds of Euro's per model but if you have never heard of her of this group of painters then all i can advise is to check out there site at - chestofcolors.com, and one last thing, tell them scott macleay advised you go there- maybe i'll start getting discounts :brushwave:

Hmmmm...I occasionally buy painted minis and I'll own up to having bought at least half a dozen from this particular painter. He's been going for years and I suspect he's taken on a little 'help' as the quality can vary a bit in some of his auctions. IMO I can easily spot the 'good' ones. I have been very happy with my purchases and, on a couple of occasion, have been able to blag a painted 'limited edition' for less than I would have been able to buy an unpainted one for:D

never seen this one before, but i find it interesting that people are annoyed by these kind of things. thumbs up for people who can make money of painting. i hate how low prizes minis go for considering the amount of hours put into them... and happy halloween everyone!

Just jumping in to ask one question...

How many people think 'propainted' is a tag put on items by sellers, such as this individual, to get more views and possibly increase sales?

Case in point-

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Warhammer-W...904?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item1c17fb4aa8

-or-

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Djinni-Dung...136?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item439b9eb050

Oh, those are both going onto my watch list, just out of morbid curiosity at the ending result.

Seen much worse 'pro-painted' stuff than this. the price may be a little high though considering at the end of the day you are still getting a reaper mini.

They're very well painted by 1981 standards...right?

"Pro-painted" only means someone is getting paid to paint it. It means nothing to begin with and even less on sale and auction sites since it's plastered everywhere the last few years. I.E. it's almost a negative to those "in the know" (like us?) but sales are targeted to the ignorant masses so the net effect is probably still a positive.
