@Arjay : I still think that internet is a great contributer to teaching people how to get to the next level. And I\'ve seen many australian articles on the net that contribute to this.

@paintingploddy : non-anonymous contests are a scam ... on the other hand, there\'s never been a GD rule to say you can\'t show your entry on the net in advance, and let\'s face it, judges have internet access .

@wereweevil : I would have prefered you cited Jérémie in the first place instead of bringing down the whole country. I\'m actually quite surprised he ever expressed that view (but I\'m not saying he didn\'t) because he\'s one of the first to say that GW takes crappy pictures for GDs and you can\'t judge by those pictures (and as far as I know, he has not been to an Australian GD) ...

The guidelines are just that - guidelines - and are only to be used for the first and second cut processes.

All I have done is assemble 7 years worth of cometition history (both as a competitor and a Daemon Judge), corporate knowledge/general mechanics/expertise/common sense and incorporated feedback from other judges and other competitors (even the ones who have and/or do nothing but bitch/moan and complain whether they have vested interest or not).

Anyone who has read the numerous Daemon articles on the web or in WD from here and o/s knows what the basics of this competition are.

Painting miniatures to the highest possible standard.

Hell, most tourney goers these days are just as qualified to judge a first round cut at this level as they do it as part of the tournament process either before, during or after every single game - and are usually then asked to rank their top three at a beauty pageant on the second day.

Judging a first round cut of Golden Daemon is NOT rocket science.

please don\'t interpret my comment as an \'attack\' on your country, it was simply an observation.
The top level painters tend to be the one\'s who\'se voices we listen to and regard highly (as far as painting goes), therefore when the elite express disparaging comments or \'generalisations\' it is bound to get noticed, and get people all uppity

my comments on the pics at that site..in past few years, australia has some of the best entries around. more impressive IMHO than the stuff in USA, Canada (except maybe Magmatrax), and even most entries in the UK.

In regards to miniatures being mishandled by GW staff during transit to and fro between stages of the comp... I was never discouraged from taking my miniatures home and delivering them myself to the regionals.

If any of mine make it through to the finals I will probably post them off myself. Depends what the postage \'rules\' are.

Given the quality of your entries you better find out what the postage rules are. I have no doubt you will be represented in Sydney in several categories. Good luck anyway.

Just a wild question : besides the Australian Golden Demon, are there any other big miniature events and if so how many people attend them? My idea is that if other events are having success, why can\'t GW OZ maintain a normal GD?

@wereweevil : no harm taken. I just wanted to understand where and why this had originated . Oh, and while I\'m at it, are there any OZ Teams like the spanish and the french? I know it sounds kind of elitist, but it does help to make the hobby better known and come up with new technics.

In melbourne there are very few contests. Every time I enter I am usually against a small handful of entries. The only real alternative is online competitions.

There isn\'t an Oz team as such, though most painters are willing to give away a few tips if they are approached.

Im pretty sure the only restrictions apply to packaging you supply for GW to post. I think you can post them however you like if you are paying for it yourself... then again they have to send it back dont they.
Ill ask next time im at gw. Or... something

I went to MOAB (mother of all battlegames) when I still lived in Sydney, I only dropped in to buy some Vallejo paints at the Eureka stand (no one else sold them in the Sydney metro area at the time) and never actually saw the painting competition but I\'ve heard that it is quite a decent one.

When I asked about this years format at my local store I was told that they would be doing all the transporting no exceptions, this instantly put me off the idea of entering. If I\'d known otherwise then I would have entered a piece... Always next year I guess...

Shame Arjays not entering

It´s really a shame Arjays not entering - he is definetely (IMHO) the best painter in Australia, I have been following his webpage updates the last year and would really like to see his work being published in White Dwarf or something. You rule! /Alex

I would like to see Arjay\'s stuff entered. Next year would be great. Then at least I might have a chance to see it in person. Arjay is up among the best. I don\'t think I could say someone is the best. The whole thing is so subjective.

There is no question that GW Oz could maintain a normal GD. I\'ve been for the last two years and to my knowledge both GDs sold out and the Golden Demon entry standard was high.

According to GW Oz, the format has been changed to allow entrants from outside of Sydney to enter without large travel expenses. It\'s quite a large continent! I\'m not sure if this is the real reason, or if they have some other agenda. I know that they must have been making a fair bit of money out of GD, so it can\'t be purely financial.

Its certainly been an interesting start... already there appears to be a number of problems...ie entries on display bases getting past the first and second rounds etc etc etc

Anyway Glenn Lamprecht will in all likelyhood compete in the UK or France in 2007. He is going to spend 18 months on his entries so I\'d think they would be ok

There is also a whisper......just a whisper in the breeze that there may be a new big painting comp in OZ next year...certainly not run by GW!!!! Great prises, display bases etc

And ogrebane; Glenn certainly doesnt work for GW....

well that sounds interesting Slardy, and i look forward to seeing what Glen comes up with if he\'s dedicating 18 months to it. i\'d love to see how he goes against the french/english.
as for getting through to the finals here this year, i think my luck was due to a number of locals NOT entering certain categories, rather than my own entires being standouts. i don\'t expect miracles when they are judged in the finals...
