P3 Paint Review

If it\'s at all possible, I would have to say that I\'m in love with a brand of paint now. Coming back from a hiatus from painting minis, I found it extremely hard to rehabilitate myself back into the swing of things while using certain kinds of paint. I needed something that could provide great coverage, yet be thinned down considerably to achieve great highlights.

The answer to my paint dilemma came to my door via USPS last Thursday. After reading through many reviews about great paint and asking around here and asking Matt and some others, I decided to give P3 a try. In an understatement, I love it.

This stuff is \'elastic\' and holds tension very well. I\'m able to paint on both white and black primer, getting nice, uniform coverage in about two coats. After getting a great basecoat, it\'s easy to thin the paint down to start shading and adding highlights. I\'m still getting the hang of the right consistency, but needless to say I\'m nearly spot on.

The range is fantastic with many great colors to choose from. The paint has a very fine and intense pigmentation to it and achieves some very vibrant results.

I\'m happy I got the entire set and I look forward to using these babies. If anyone has any questions feel free to ask! If anyone has any comments, feel free to post. :)

I love the feel of them as well but I do find that if you thin them down to glaze consistancy they seperate. It\'s a bit anoying to have to stir your paint every time you want to dip in you brush.

Have to agree with the sentiment here. Unfortunately no one locally sells them, and shipping to Canada is rediculous on most online sites. I only have two of the sets, and I love it so far. The P3 Menoth White\'s I use alsmost every miniature, and I love the Sanguine Red.

They work surprisingly well in an airbrush when thinned with Tamiya thinner. Being a liquid pigment I found that they don\'t separate as badly as others that I\'ve tried.

i\'ve been a big fan since day 1...i like the colour selection, and the coverage, but P3 paints have not really replaced any other paints in my collection...i still use whatever works...there are at least four different brands on my paintin\' table...

i can\'t recommend \'em enough, but at the end of the day, they are just one more tool for the job...

cheers

I have to thank Matty for recommending them - I don\'t have many - only 3 in fact, but they are colours I reach for when I need that hue :)

Also picked up some Vallejo the other day, but haven\'t had chance to use them yet...

Reaper makes an anti-shine additive, which may be similar to matte medium, which Vallejo makes, maybe you could try one of those products and see if that gives you a finish you like better?

I think the P3 paints do have very nice coverage, though I agree a lot of them are shiny. They seem pretty sturdy in resisting rub-off, too. I have had real troubles trying to dilute them to a consistency that works with my usual painting techniques, but it\'s probably lack of practice. Mixing in the paints I usually use for highlights usually does the trick, though.

They are a little glossy, but you can just use some Dullcote when you\'re done with the model to reduce the shine and also to seal the model up nicely.

I\'ve gotten the hang of getting the right consistency down to make great layers for highlighting and shading. These are a dream to work with. The coverage is excellent with any primer as well.
