@Duende.....excellent.You have done very well getting the pupils round.If you want try and dot the black iris on this one,Im assuming she is bigger than 28mm?
Also try and match up the eyes.Her left pupil isnt touching the bottom lid where as her right one is.Match them by either extending the blue or painting a white line on the respective eyes.
But please just leave if you are happy and dont want to risk it.Im very picky with myself and try to get things as near as I can.Eyes are very tough to do well and very easy to mess up.

Rowena\'s Eyes
Here we go...the skin is darker than I had planned. VMC Beige Brown is darker than Tanned Skin. I have made her eyes red to match the gem in the skull, as if she is in the middle of some incantation. Eventually I hope to do a little OSL from the gem to the skull as well.
Quick question (one of many I will have, I am sure): how many times did you have to go over the mini to get a nice base coat? I have gone over Rowena several times and she still seems to be a little blotchy. Also, on things like very fine touch ups, do you ever not dilute the paint? I know in general that is a big no-no, but if I have a 3-0 or 4-0 brush and am trying to pick up dilute paint, I can\'t seem to get enough paint on the brush. The main problem I have is that for fine details, I try to do it in one shot--the odds of me screwing it up increase exponentially as I go back again and again lol.

I added a close up of the face to make myself look worse than I already have
. The close ups can be so disheartening....Anyway, I had a lot of trouble with the eyes. As you can see in the picture, the right eye looks almost as if I didnt paint it, but in the previous photos you can see I have. I think there may be a ridge on the eyeball itself. Or perhaps I just would like to believe that lol. Another question: I elected to go with black both above and below the eye because she is starting out so dark. Should I repaint her lower lid with a darker shade of brown, or leave as is?

@Duende......I thought she was 72mm but wasn\'t sure if it was a smaller non winged version.On 72mm I would black dot the iris and maybe do a white glint reflection.This is personal taste though and I always advise that if you dont feel you are at the level to do it then dont.
I prefer a 28mm figure without painted eyes tp a one with badly painted ones.
The beauty of using thinned paint is that you can go over many times without clogging the detail.
@Jabberwocky.......I just keep adding the paint until its solid.The thin paint means you can do this without getting brush strokes or losing detail.
I always use diluted paint.What I like is to make it so its thick enough to leave a touch of colour but thin enough to not leave brush strokes.
You have a dark basecoat there,no problem with that but darker paint will take more layers over a white primer.For black skin I use a black primer.
The direction of the eyes is great too but you do need to match up the right eye.
Its tough if the cast has a flaw and sometimes you will have to work around it.
As for the black bottom lid I would redo it with brown if you are taking the skin up light,but leave it if you want the skin dark.
Thats a really close pic and it wont look as evident from a normal shot.

@Supervike.....they look very nice....basecoats real smooth.The eyes on the second one look fine to me.The first looks like the brown lower lid is thick.

After the basecoat paint the whites of the eyes.Then use a very thin dark brown wash and wash over the whites.If you control the wash well then a small amount of it will form in the recess next to the eyeball and still leave the eye just off white.Leave the white like this.

This was hard. That little 25mm mini kept closing her eyes everytime I came close with a paintbrush! I can redo her eyes before tomorrow if you say so, teacher, although she doesn\'t look as bad in real time. Painted the taller model with the Tan Skin from another company. It isn\'t as dark, but decided to leave it and see where this goes from here. Had to borrow GW Tan Skin for 28mm.
@Duende......excellent.Now re set the bottom lid with brown.What I can see is a white gap below her right pupil and none under her left.The opposite to before.Use the brown bottom lid to even this out so the brown line just touches the right pupil.Do the left so it matches.You should be left with eyes that are perfect.
It might sound picky but you look well capable of doing it,and it does make a difference,you can see yourself the difference putting the irises in has done not to mention the glint.

@Anatora.......hmm.The taller figures eyes look very neat and tidy though above them it looks quite rough,dont know if this is the casting or paint.If you know the casting was smooth then make sure your primer and paint is thinned more.I suspect the casting.
There is nothing you can do with it apart from stripping the figure and restarting which I dont suggest.You can \"hide\" it afterward.
The smaller figure looks extremely rough around the face and again it looks like casting to me.
For the purpose of this exercise and practice I would just leave them as is.
@everyone.......when I can I totally inspect a figure for defects before I buy it.
If its mail order you have to hope its ok.All figures can be sorted out though ,with a few exeptions of course(GW LOTR)
A tip I got from a large figure painter was to make sure all steps of miniature painting are treated with the same care and attention.
From getting it out of the box to putting it on the shelf.For display pieces and anyone who takes pride in thier work it is vitally important that the figure is smooth and free from defects before the primer goes on.
I cannot stress that enough.

Sorry im late everyone!
first off, Hello! i\'m a newbie here, been a painter since i was 16 but never got as far as i could, and had a few (too many years off) nearly 10 and have recently got back into it. very supprised to find so much info online about it, with tutorials and the best (hot or not site) lol coolmini!! ROCKS hehe rather rate minis than people anyday hehe anyway i digress.. i have since restarting hit a rut so i have been looking around for anything to help me be able to do work good enough to exibit on coolmini
anyway.... i have scanned through this topic (which is the best source of teaching i have found, practicall step by step and everyone asking questions and posting pics..
so i think i am upto date with the lession so far.. and here are the step by step pics, please comment, pull apart, help me improve
the mini i chose was a GW Dark Elf Witch cause was all i had that had any amount of decent flesh on...
i have also included a pic of the same mini that i painted at the begining of the year so please feel free to comment and pull that apart too.. i want to see if i can do this one better than the older one...

black undercoat (i dont usually use it, this is as brought)

phase 2 colour flesh in teracotta cause i nowt have tanned flesh,

Added eyes, and puples and eyeliner
sorry the pics arnt all that great for major detail, i need to set up a lil mini studio again to take decent pics

OK. second time around. Stripped the face of 28mm mini down to bare metal, smoothed out some rough spots around the eyes and re-did priming , painting and eyes. Closely examined the tall mini and took off bumps and irregular flaws, particularly on face, thighs and waist. Reprimed bare metal, then painted her with recommended tanned skin since I had to re-paint her anyway. I\'m blind now, but I think both minis look a bit better than before.
