Painting Faces (on LotR minis)

I wonder if any of you have some useful tips on how I should paint faces on my LotR-minis. I have just painted for 2 months, but I want to get better!! I am painting about 2-4 hours a day, so I get some practise. Check out my minis, and give me tips on how to improve! http://www.coolminiornot.com/browse.php?submitter=Mytola

Seems to me that you are using washes on the faces. washing is fine for shading, but you could pick up the forehead, cheekbones, chin and bridge of the nose with elf flesh or a similar color. That would give the mini a better look.

Mytola,

You\'re off to a good start! Your miniatures have a very antique look to them. In general, I would reccomend thinning your paints and washes more. Also, try to keep them clean as you work.

As for the faces, lots of good tutorials exist here. Check out Jen Haley\'s article on faces.

For starters, try painting the entire eye-socket with dark brown, then painting in the whites. Now dot the pupil with black, (using a Micron Pigma pen if you wish.)

Another method is to paint the entire eye-socket white, then paint a thin black line down the middle of the eye. Now edge around the eye with dark brown.

Eyes are important, probably the strongest point of focus, (assuming the model isn\'t wearing a helmet.)

Another tip is to mix some thin red and a touch of black, forming a rusty reddish brown color. Now carefully paint inside the mouth with it. Highlight the lips if necessary, darker on the top lip.

Hopefully, this will help you along. Good luck!

Impressive work for someone who painted for only 2 months. Looks like you\'ve got all the fundamentals right.

Just be bolder on your highlights and rely less on inks unless you are going for a weathered look on the model (orc, undead etc).

Your work is good
work on your skin add some highlights to the high points of the face
thin the wash a bit dark lighten it
i use 50/50 mix water to ink 50/50 future mix to ink
you can always go darker on the wash but very hard to lighten it
and work on your eyes

hope this helps you out
keep it up we all get better with time

Well its pretty darn good for 2 months, try some dull coat, it will make the details stand out better and thin the paint a little more. also dont wash so heavily with Inks I did that when I started too, add a water to the ink and drop it into the grooves and let the capilary action pull the paint down. it will give it a much cleaner look.
