Painting room stuff

A room devoted to painting minis? Well the first thing you need is me int he room to kick you out so I can take it over. lol

-plenty of light sources
-something to help circulate/ventilate air
-something to stare out of focus at like a lava lamp to rest your eyes after staring at little things to paint
-some kind of noise making device to break the monotony of silence and any street noises to let you be more relaxed while painting
-a coffee cup warming plate (cord or battery powered) *either place your coffee on it or a cup of water to keep some warm on hand for anything you need so you don\'t shock yourself or anything else placing it in cold water after having been under a heat generating light source.

I built myself a huge MDF paint station to place minis and paints etc on and hung lots of pics of minis and stuff for inspiration. I also have a Mini Marshall amp to play my I pod thru (i need some new tunes you would be surprised how quickly you get bored of 10,000 tracks) and a weights bench which has nothing to do with mini painting but stops me wasting away to nothing.

Also make sure you dont get tempted to do other things while your in your mini painting room, you need to be focused for long periods.

Its going to be different for everyone but that\'s my set up, pretty simple really.

I don\'t think you need a room, just a dedicated space. One of the most prolific GD painters I know paints face down lying on a beanbag with a tray for the minis and paint!

Sure all the fancy tools help, but its really about putting aside the time and the desire to do better.

A dedicated space can help with this, I used to have a desk in a built in wardrobe. Open the sliding door and everything was ready to go.

Yeah see, the problem is that I currently paint in my bedroom. It gets so taken over by miniatures that its not a bedroom anymore-not really a place I want to be unless I\'m painting. Also, I have a lot of pets so its often kinda dirty. The rug doesnt help. All sorts of crap gets in my paints and stuff. So i just need a new space so my bedroom can be a bedroom again.

I\'ll make a suggestion that could help. When we were in a smaller house (thus, no man cave for me to paint in), I had a cheap large-ish tool box as my \"spot\". It really was great to have it. The one I got was deep, so spray cans could go in the bottom. On their side, but all four of them: black primer, white primer, gloss spray, matte spray. Left over space was good for some small plastic boxes to hold small pieces. Then the removable tray held brushes, paint pots, knives and files. It also had two little pop-up doors on the lid. Filled that with foam, and I then had storage space for 8 minis.

You can then take this paint box where you need to. The dining room table, a bench outside, the garage tool bench, a game store, etc. I even took mine on vacation a couple of times, in case it rained and we were stuck inside. Didn\'t happen, but the box was small enough that it was easy to get it packed.

As for the rest of your mini plague infesting your room, I\'m not going to be as much help there. lol

to be honest, i paint in two locations, one is a dining table i have set up in my bedroom at my parents house (where i live during the week), the other is one of the armrests on the couch at my GF\'s house, with a little side table to place my painting bag on.

and to be honest i prefer the couch.... it\'s right beside a window, under a lamp, nice and comfy and right in front of the TV.

that said, i do keep all my bits in my bedroom, nice and organized in boxes on a shelve.... and keep hauling my case of paints and brushes back and forth....

When your hobby becomes something that \"should be taken seriously\" it ceases to be a hobby and becomes a chore. Winning awards and getting high ratings is nice but that shouldn\'t be the focus of your mini-ing.

When I sit down to paint/convert, that is the one moment of my day where I can stop thinking about work, household chores, kids, wife etc. and just focus on that little piece of metal/resin/plastic and forget where I am.

My workplace is in my garage, on a wooden workbench that doubles as a cutting board, paint pallette, mounting surface. I have a couple of drawers for storage, a small lamp with a white bulb, some old cups and plates, and a whole pile of minis and paint pots. That is my haven, if for only a few minutes.

Just set up my painting room, what I made sure I had:

Nice desk with storage (L shapped computer/office desk).
Lamps
Magnifier
Drawers for Spray Cans
Holders for Brushes
Drawers for tools (Xacto\'s, Pin Vice etc)
Some way to set you paint up logically and easy to reach (I bought dollar store spice rack things).
Tackle boxes for bits
Book Shelves for Storage
Various bins, boxes to sort things to go on those shelves.

My paint room moved into what was my computer room. So now I have a desk in one corner by one window with my PC, Dual Monitors, surround sound etc and another desk in the opposite corner under the other window with all my painting stuff.

It\'s working rather well so far.
