Wow! Covering that much area in all one color with the same repetitive detail would drive me absolutely batty. lol! Well done Pegazus!

I contacted your wife about this thread and she said she is willing to pay me and others to sabotage your scores. So I am just apologizing in advance that I have a bunch of 1s coming your way.
Also it is uncool to buy a mini van and to buy a mini van model thats minus 3 points sorry but that's life.
Great idea with the thread I may have to do the same for my mountain that's busting out of the closet.

Got a little green on the ship today. Not really happy with the way the arrays turned out, but I may be able to clean that up when I repaint the white something brighter. We'll see!

Forgot to write last time, but the green was Jade Green (9015). I've added some Pearl White (9100). Had real problems with it. It appears it met the dreaded not-screwed-on-completely cap fail, and I had to pull the stopper out and rehabilitate what I could. I've got some pooling on the array, but I'm not sure it'll fix right. Tried already and it just seemed to highlight it worse. Think I'll put that one on the most un-photogenic side. Also went over again with the green where I needed to.

What I'm planning next for it is to go over it all with a wash of either dark gray or a bit lighter. Maybe using that first base coat color. I'm going to whip up some popsicle stick stand-ins first to ensure I like the effect.

Also, we've got a new entry starting today. This is the Reaper mini I plan on using in the diorama with cfwheeler58's Wolfen that I've long ago painted. I'm thinking I might use this technique (where it was semi-discussed in this thread) to make a bow for the Wolfen (thanks to Hoodoo_Hermit for that find!). I think the technique would be similar for a single string, and I might even get it to be the broken string setup that I'd like. Have to play around with it. Only have the skin on him painted, using the Tanned Skin triad (9043, 9044, and 9045). Happy with the face, disappointed with the legs. Might have to go back over them a bit with the midtone.

So, +2 for today (6pts total).

Looking over the picture, I've realized I'm really going to have to do something about that solid flat surface on the side, just under the blue jump arrays.

Aha! Looking at the screen captures I've got, it appears that there should be some fighter/ship launch tubes there! Wonder what happened?

FINALLY! I found the other image I was looking for here! He painted it up in the TV show colors, and there's no mid-bay launchers either! So, either I can spend the extra time and effort to sculpt one set (and then mold and resin work), or I can let it go as is. I'm thinking of letting it go. They'd be very small, which is probably why they were left off entirely.

But it also showed me that I overlooked painting the stripes just underneath the vanes in the livery colors. I'll have to at least rectify that.

Need a name too. Thinking some Irish explorer, given the green and white. Not sure. Ideas?

EDIT: Also, I am aware of the fighter's "damage" on his upper arm. Not sure if that's a miscasting error, or an intentional feature. Either way, it'll become a wound, and actually make the diorama much more interesting.

EDIT 2: Believe I've found an appropriate name for the ship: Robert McClure. I think the big thing for me is he didn't DIE exploring.

Gah! Three weeks without any activity?! I knew OT was eating into my painting, but didn't think it was three weeks. Damn you drawing releases! If it weren't for the Thanksgiving holiday, I probably wouldn't have found time to paint.

Got a little paint onto the fighter. I was planning to try to paint his armor in a style that showed that he'd changed the colors multiple times, more or less implying that he's changed allegiance many times, and is just out to make a buck. So, what should the primary color be? Red? Blue? I'm using green for the wolfen, so that's out. Aha! Purple! Grabbed the mini and found a HUGE problem!

No armor.

Nope, it all looks like leathers to me, so the carefully (ha!) planned out shoulder pads and damage showing the other colors underneath... all not needed. So it went down to leather colors. Used Tanned Leather (9031) for the base, and the first highlight was Amber Gold (9032). I'll probably put another highlight on it, then make all the straps a darker leather color other than the buckskin look I'm going for here. Makes him a hunter like persona and still fits in with the diorama plan.

I believe I'm finished on the explorer ship, however. I touched up the one area that was supposed to have the detail color scheme, and took this picture.

Now, I could go back and add in a wash on the grays, but I really am thinking it won't really add a lot to the model. So, I'm calling it good at this point and will need to break out the light tent for a really nice glamor shot of it for the gallery. I'll seal it with my regular set of gloss and matte afterwards.

So, I now need to cast about for something else on the list to paint. I'm thinking I might try my hand at the orks from the Black Reach set. Oh, I do have that Elise paint again that I'm doing. Or... I dunno. I'll rummage about and see what suits my mood.

So, that's +2 pts so far for today, 8pts total. I'm probably going to have a painting session with the kids this afternoon, so that'll be something to consider in with what I pick.

EDIT: Forgot to mention just as soon as I hit post (doesn't that always happen?) that I also painted the fighter's eyes. They're very very narrow slits, so I'm not sure I'm even going to try to put in irises at all. Have to see.
And another little tidbit on lighting. I've got a GE Reveal light in one lamp, and an Ott light in the other. On a whim, I took the above shots with both lamps and then just one lamp or the other. Funny enough, I liked the ship with just the Ott light, but the fighter looked better with the Reveal. Guess I should just go with all three types each time and pick out which I like best. Figure that's easy enough for WIPs.

Gah! Casting about for another thing to paint led me to find these minis that I'd tucked away in a corner of the cabinet! Added to the list.

  • Bear flat (11/26/2011)
  • Lion flat (11/26/2011)
  • Mickey Mouse (11/26/2011)
  • Minnie Mouse (11/26/2011)
  • Piglet (11/26/2011)
  • Pooh (11/26/2011)
  • Tigger (11/26/2011)
  • Eeyore (11/26/2011)
  • 2x teacups (11/26/2011)
  • Some dragon fighter (maybe a Reaper mini) (11/26/2011)

Never did get to paint with the kids last night (they chose Minecraft instead). So time to poke around some more and see what the mood brings.

And I've got the first gallery post of a mini painted here. The EAS McClure is in the gallery, pending approval of course.

Decided that I'll get the orks from the Black Reach set started. Not going to try to get it done to any display standards, just table top. Should be fun to just bash 'em out. Problem was that I spent an HOUR trying to find all the pieces. I've got a squad of space marines already done from it, and so all the pieces were put in little organizer boxes long ago. Except for the copters (koptas? Need to learn to speak ork for them). Had to find them in a little drawer organizer box, the bases were up in the cabinet, and the rest are in the box where they should be.

Now, I originally wanted to paint them with purple skin, based on the fact that the planet (and thus the bases) they're on is covered in purple fungi. Not sure this'll work exactly with the fluff, and I'm tempted to not care. But, think it might go a bit more smoothly for any fan boiz to make them green skinned still, but highly purple. It might turn out to be a complete and total mess.

Hm. Might want to do a test Ork.

Oh, and gallery post so +10 pts, total of 18 now.

Now wait a sec, Pegazus - I thought the list was supposed to be getting smaller! ;)
It WAS! Helps when I don't have minis found tucked away that I'd forgotten. I've got five cabinets that block off my painting area in the basement here. I'm almost scared to go clean them a bit for fear of what minis I might find.

Tonight was interesting. Pulled out my box of orcs and laid them all out. Realized I'd jumbled everything up into one big pile, and so spent the next hour and a half trying to figure out what head was supposed to go where, and which gun with which body. Really felt like I was in some archaeological dig site trying to piece together bones and glyphs into something coherent. In the end, it just seemed that nothing was going to fit together perfectly as I was always one extra or one short to make everything flow together. Then it hit me that I could take all the mismatched parts and combine them into a single figure which could then be the test subject for the paint scheme.

I'm really thinking I can pull off the purple to green skin. It'll look a bit like an eggplant, so disaster could loom.

And here's a picture of the unfortunate mini:

I should really take more pictures of the minis I'm doing. Every time I post a picture, I notice a thousand and one things wrong. The sword hilt and end of the hilt both have plastic filings on them, along with both legs. I'll scrub 'em down good tomorrow I suppose!

Got the little guy all cleaned up compared to yesterday's picture, plus gave him a really good brushing with a stiff toothbrush to clean off all the little flakes in the nooks and crannies. Got him primed white, and he's drying in the garage. Probably be the last painting I get done until the weekend. Oh well.

Ah, the joy/pain of forgotten mini's... yesterday I discovered a cardboard box with hmm... 20-30 marines in it. Apparently 6-7 years ago when the 'new' generation of marines came out, I bought some. Apparently I had assembled, undercoated, and basecoated, and then tucked them away in a dark corner. I have yet another Tac squad, Dev Squad, and command squad with jump packs... sigh...

Kids decided to swap a shortened night of Minecraft tonight for a longer one tomorrow, so painting made the agenda. Got to try out three kinds of purple skin on the guy, and settled on Imperial Purple (9023) with a dry brush of Pale Green (9012). The other two were either too dark, or too pink. So this I think will actually work. Had a problem with getting impatient and actually rubbed the colors off while dry brushing, but that was on the three test paints.

Oh, in case you wonder, I painted the head, left arm, and right arm in the three colors. Didn't paint him three times. Pictures below represent the final scheme on the skin. Figure I'll add a bunch of purple and green plants around too, to tie it into each other.

The next problem I've got is what color to make the clothes and armor, etc. My first gut reaction is very orange, but figure it'll look like vomit on the mini. Just writing out loud here, but maybe purple, or maybe green to try to make them more traditional. Course, that seems a stretch. Maybe dark browns and very light tans would be best. And assorted silver metallic bits for all the metal. Opinions? I'd also like any suggestions on the skin. Thinking a light ink wash of green might bring things together some.

Picture time!

Well for the armor and dakka bits i would go dark metal with rusty bits. And clothes, either dark earthy red, black or dark brown. Also i would hit the skin with some Thraka Green wash to get some more depth to it.

Got some painting done finally! Started on some leather straps for the orc, and got the eyes on both it and the fighter. Really had a hard time with the orc as I could not get the eye on the left to pop at ALL! And then I finally realized that he doesn't have one! Sheesh! He's got a big slash up on his brow, and I believe that's meant to be where he's been struck before. Might highlight that with some bright purple in order to emphasize it.

The fighter's eye was done and redone maybe six or seven times. Finally gave up and went with my large basic brush as it appeared to have the better point. First try, got something that works. Got really close to trying to do it a second time, but decided to not screw up what was passable in the first place.

Kinda tossing about on his clothes as well. I'm thinking dark red pants would look very nice on him, but not sure what to do with the shirt/undershirt/tarp/whatever is under his belts and armor. I think I'm going to be going with a dark bluish steel for the plates and such on his upper torso. I'll have to think about that. Maybe a nice pink? <ducks>

Also, I'm going to update my rules a bit. Since getting to 50 votes appears to be something that ain't going to happen, I'm dropping that down to 35 which does seem achievable. And at 35 votes, I've got a big 5.0 on the EAS McClure. So, NO BONUS! Damn. Next time...

So here's the pics. They are admittedly blurry, but less blurry on the parts I want to illustrate. No shading yet, just the base coat. Kept having problems with that too. Keep thinking that when it dries, it appears that I need to thin my paints, but doing that drives me insane because of the number of times I have to go over things to get them a solid color.

Just need to paint more.

Okay, enough complaining. Posting. Picturing.
