Perry Miniatures

I trekked down to the local model shop yesterday, as I had a day off, to pick up some new basing material to play with. Helpful chap pointed me toward some boxes of Perry historical/military 28mm figures.

The American Civil War box looked nice. I was wondering if these are similar enough in scale to be able to combine GW Empire plastic bits with? Anyone any experience?

Range: American Civil War
ACW1 Hard Plastic Infantry (Box of 36)

Thank you, B.

A similar question came up on another forum regarding using them for Imperial guard....

I have one sprue of the Napoleonic Bristish Infantry set and they are smaller than the GW humans - they are basically closer to 28mm than GW bits - I saw them against some plastic 40K Cadians and the size difference was noticable. Unfortunately I can\'t comment on the Empire stuff because I\'ve not seen them. If the plastic empire figures are smaller than the cadians, it might just work

I know that was wordy, but hopefully you\'ll get my drift

cheers

The newer GW stuff is all closer to 32mm or 28mm \"Heroic Scale\" while the Perry plastics are regular 28mm stuff. So yes the size difference is noticeable unless you use older GW miniatures.

Cheers guys, I won\'t rush to pick up a box then, perhaps if I have cash slopping about next time I\'m in the store I\'ll give them a go & resurrect this thread with a pic. B.

basicly, perry minis are 28mm with realistic proportions.

gw don\'t realy have a set scale any more, but they are closer to 30mm steroid munchers.

Their plastics are great quality. As good if not better than the Warlord Games plastics.

With GW\'s LotR figures being noticably smaller than their Warhammer figures (& largely sculpted by the Perrys?) I wonder if they\'d do? The Mordor Orc plastics boxset were suprisingly dinky, hence my ending up painting them to go with a hobgoblin team rather than greenskins. Hmmm, payday soon :)

What are you trying to use them for? At least in my opinion without any major converting, American Civil War historicals don\'t seem like they would fit in too well with anything fantasy, especially anything from LoTR.

Hi, I didn\'t have any specific troop I wanted to create, just an excess of plastic arms & heads that need bodies (GW Empire mainly). The Perry stuff looked like a lot of bodies for a low price. I thought at first, from the box art, that they came with spears as an alternative for the guns but the chap in shop said they\'re just the banner poles! (I suppose I\'m too used to fantasy miniatures!).

I\'m not overly concerned about them looking out of place, I use my figures for RPGs rather than armies so consistency is less important. It wouldn\'t be particularly unusual for us to end up with late 1970\'s Ral Partha, 80\'s Grenadier, 80\'s to current Citadel plus a smattering of Harlequin, Mithril & Haribo on the table by the end of a games night. Don\'t underestimate the value of a bag of Haribo, the bag with crocodiles, frogs & fish in it is really handy for swamp encounters!

My mention of the LotR orcs was based more on them being a smaller scale than Warhammer. Of course doing head/weapon swaps would involve chopping up the orcs as you don\'t get spare parts with them, so It wouldn\'t use up my spare stuff anyway.

I\'m a novice when it comes to mixing up plastic bits from different kits so am only just getting my head around the options (glue an arm on in the position you want, that I get. Glue a different arm on from a different kit, requires changing the way I think! Too much time spent keeping things in neat order & not \"daring\" to pollute one kit with parts from another source. Wee bit OCD/precious really so I\'m breaking free!).

Also, getting to support the local indy model shop as well as GW would be nice, so I thought I\'d check out the models available there (once pointed in the right direction). Most of the soldier figures seem to be 15mm, Perry was one of the only ranges in stock that was 28mm. Although there was some nice looking scenery it seemed very expensive (pre-painted). I need to browse some online stores for figure pricing as well, I think my feeling that GW stuff is often overpriced may be based on rather out of date costs (a decade ago?).

@BPI: Gotcha. To be honest I am not sure if they would even fit LoTR figures. I remember hearing that GW made LoTR minis a bit smaller than their regular figs which at that time were closer to 28mm (or what the Perry minis are now), so that you wouldn\'t be able to mix bits. So as far as I know the LoTR range is actually closer to 25mm.

As you said, I think your best bet is to just browse online shops and check out some of the smaller manufacturers. If you want to support your local shop, then I am sure they can order anything your interested in if they don\'t have it in stock.

\"I think my feeling that GW stuff is often overpriced may be based on rather out of date.\" - No, most will agree with you that is still the case. Most of their stuff is way over priced for what your getting. Their metal stuff is somewhat ridiculous and their plastics in my opinion, or any plastics at that, are not worth as much as GW charges for them.
