Hey Ben!!!!!!
Yep......got to check Jaume\'s figure close up, and as that ENORMOUS photo shows, it\'s pretty much flawless.
And he was totally shocked and I\'d say slightly embarrassed too! After all it was his first GD competition.
However, remember that two of the Judges were Banshee and Karaikal who have at least 3 swords between them and numerous demons, so compared to the UK version, If they felt it was deserving, I\'d respect and accept their decision
Anyhow....only been home about 20 mins.....it\'s 1am and I\'m wired......more later

Good to see \'just\' a cracking job on a bog-standard mini win a sword - GD is a painting comp after all!
The face is brilliantly done and the more I look at the whole thing, the better it gets after being initially underwhelmed. If it\'s a winner for Banshee, then that\'s enough for me.

It is just beautiful. And the thing to remember is that the LOTR minis are a bit smaller than WHFB or 40K minis. To get that level of detail is a feat.

Hey guys, for those of you having doubts:
1- Allan\'s mini was accepted into the comp because it is not being released anymore, hence, it is not commercial and being allan the sculptor there\'s no reason why it shouldn\'t be entered. Actually, if GW banned it to be released because of infraction of being too similar to their IP, why the hell would they not allow it?? hehehe Sounds logical doesn\'t it?
2- In Spain the open category can win the sword. Actually, all GREAT models were entered in this category, and all scratchbuilt models were restricted to this category too from this year on (with no previous indication, so a ZERO for the organisation..). Everyone thinks the sword was going to come outta this category, but in the end there was a big surprise... Jaume\'s face was utterly amazing hahaha. Apparently, GW has banned scratches to win the sword anymore. That\'s why, some of you guys are a bit \"disappointed\" (wait and see the open winning models.....). After the scratches painted amazingly, the next best painted mini from the catalogue was jaume\'s, which is mindblowing too..
By the way, Karaikal and Banshee did judge only the best 3 pieces of each category, but did not get to choose the order of these nor the sword decision, which was done by a GW bloke, a commercial manager they say... all in all, a very very strange competition this year... i guess if banshee and Karaikal could have decided everything, things would have gone much different regarding this, i presume..
They are just killing Golden Demon, in my opinion.
Myself, i won a gold in Single Fantasy mini, after an almost one year break of non serious painting, which is not too bad

Cheers Albert.. Sounds like strange goings on indeed...There\'s a lot of it about at the moment GW are really gunning after thee IP and I know there have been a few chages up the top that are looking fo more out of the comps than a painting showcase.. a bad move IMHO as it drives away a certain amount of ceativity... will be interesting to see how the rest of the wold comps pan out...

but the open category (as Albert said) was of such a high standard... some really jaw dropping stuff... the eldar bust that placed (gold I think?) is one of those minis that literally leaves you speechless Ben

It\'s a pretty model. I bought one during the month or so when it was available. Haven\'t painted it yet, but will at some point (soon, I hope).
About the sword winner... I think it\'s bloody amazing (or seems so from what I can judge by the photo). It seems to have genuine quality (as Sven said, quality can seem very different in real life than in photos) as the photo seem very accurate. I\'m surprised that this type of mini would win a sword, but I\'m quite pleased to see that a simple mini can win thanks to its painting workmanship alone.

That Boromir is lovely. I actually feel that the call is right to ban scratch builds outside the open and even to make them sword-ineligible. I feel sculpting models from scratch is really getting into professional territory and pulls GD away from the fact that it should be primarily a mini-painting contest.
That said, not informing people beforehand is not a good way to go about it.
This is all just my opinion of course and it often falls down on having to draw a line between heavy conversion and scratch build. I mean, where did my Ogre Maneater lie?
But Boromir is great and a worthy winner in my book.

To some extent I agree with you Steve, 100% scratchbuilt models seem somewhat out of place in the regular categories. Open is still prestigious as hell given some of the entries the last few years. I\'m not totally sure about banning them altogether from other categories, but I feel like I have more of a chance given my limited sculpting abilities.
I\'m getting better and more ambitious over time, but it\'s still nowhere near total scratchbuild level and I did feel like unconverted models are easily left in the dust.
Luckily I still placed top 3 in 40k single when I rebelled and entered an all-plastic SM Scout with a shotgun of all things. About as anti-hero as you can get with a Marine

I don\'t agree with full sculpts not being allowed to win.
In the end, many people I see who want to paint and advance the art aspect of the hobby, get inspiration from the beautiful works you see out there (mainly from the European/historic scenes).
But, GW needs cash -- they haven\'t really being doing that well, and I guess showing people that one of their average-sculpts can win, helps them overall.

it\'s not just them needing cash mate, a lot of people enter a sculpt and then you see that winning sculpt up for sale as a production model (and why not, i would) which means GW are giving free advertisement to their competition.
it has benefited them in the past, but not nowadays with most people having access to the internet, allowing small companies to compete against the larger ones.

I feel no sadness for GW. Frankly, comparing their models to Scibor\'s terminators, or reapers characters, etc...they could do a lot better.
Example, from a discussion from some time ago, now that GW is moving towards the computer visualization software, they can easily get the machines scibor uses and enhance their space marines beyond compare...
I still say, why pay top dollar for subpar products...

Umm I totally disagre..last thing I ever want to see if GW pile loads of crap detail on a figure for the sake of pileing on detail. I think all of Scibors SM conversions are way over the top of the side of being gaudy.. The Space Marine is a classic figure..other than make them a tad bigger..dont change a thing..
Plus what scibor is doing and what GW\'s technology for making and molding plastics are two different things. you could never mold a scibor conversion in plastic and get a copy.

really liking resin figures more and more hehehe
I like the detail.
Maybe cause I\'m used to indian dresses for example, which are crazy...TONS of jewel stones/crystals on them, patterns, etc.
Makes stuff like wedding dresses or fine gowns in north america and europe look mundane!!!!
I like that type of detail so really like figures that have it
