This story really hits home. Why? This woman is my wife’s cousin. If you aren’t an organ donor, become one. My wife posted this on her Facebook page. I figured I would it here.
As my wife said;

“Are you an organ donor? Why are only 16% of BC residents registered? People like my cousin have to uproot her family to move to Ontario to get a transplant quicker, or should I say in time... CBC did a story on her that was on the news at 6pm today; if you click on the link
http://www.cbc.ca/bc/ it\'s on the right side about half way down. Please register, what have you got to lose. https://www.transplant.bc.ca/onlinereg/bcts.asp ”

I was really bumming because my blood sugar levels are too high and will not go down. Then I saw this. I feel more for her, her husband and her kid. I hope things work out for her. It just sucks she has to move because of a lack of donors. If you aren’t an organ donor, become one.

Thanks for reading this.

EB, I\'ve been a doner since I could check the box on my driver\'s licence. (yes, we had cars back then.)

Part of your issue is population density. The more people you are around, the more probablity of your need coming up on a list. If you were up in the great unpopulated far north central, I\'d be very supprised that they could get you a donor in time. There just are not enough people around you to get the proper match, even if they were all donors.

I just feel for anyone that gets my knees.

Same here -

Part of the problem is a belief you have to take it all with you.

Just talk to my dad.

She is from Vancouver. Its pretty populated.

I uderstand about the take it with you mentality. My family in Mobile didn\'t want me to be an organ donor. My mom tried to talk me out of it.

I figure Im not gonna need any of it where Im going, so they can have what they want out of whats left that works when I go.

Apart from my eyes, cause the missus said she wants those bits.

Possibly before I am actually dead.

I\'m afraid I\'m one of those people STEELCULT is talking about.

I give blood.

Although I\'m not religious I\'m open minded and because I don\'t know what will happen to me when i snuff it, then I don\'t like the idea of giving away my vital organs.

I know it sounds stupid, and probably is but if by a chance you do take it all with you then I don\'t want to be organless whereever I end up.

Every one who\'s died so far has left their organs behind, so I doubt I\'ll be taking mine along with me when I go. So, I\'ve ticked the box.

can\'t have mine. and my bloods no good.

i can\'t be convinced that giving organs is the best thing for society. it may be the best thing for some people but in the end those people aren\'t my problem.
i often feel that people who are giving organs are in fact making me and my families ilfe harder. it\'s selfish for sure but isn\'t wanting an organ selfish too?

why are my opinions always different to everyone else on the boards ???

Would you rather rot or let your remains help someone else live?

The idea of my organs being ripped out of my body after I die is sort of disturbing. So is rotting in the ground. I don\'t know why, I don\'t believe in life after death or anything like that. I deffinately want to be cremated when the time comes.

This confuses me highly, please explain?

Remeber if you die young they\'ll going to make an autopsy anyways, remove the intestines and put you full of nice stuffing! Except in some countries where they put the organs in a plastic bag and place it back into the body cavity... They still put stuffing though. ahem..

I will be cremated that\'s for sure. And hopefully my organs can do something good. I do need to check the box though... I have ment to for a long time.

Of course the thought of someone pulling the organs out of the body feels bad. My stomach area kinds of tightens at the thought. But if you\'re dead you\'re dead. :) You\'re body decomposes or gets incinerated anyways, so why worry? It\'s the thought of death and afterlife that worries I think...

@Farseerlum: Remember the golden rule, eh? Would you rather see a world with plenty of organ donors or none at all. And please imagine at the same time your near and dear getting sick. I understand the selfishness if you imagine you were alive during the process though.. :) So much have Monty Python taught me!

Or because you\'re actually dead.. it\'s more of an soulishness I guess. ;) I mean it\'s not even selfish to not donate organs once your dead.

Well, in this case it\'s probably because it doesn\'t seem to make any sense. How exactly do others\' organ donations affect you in any way (except maybe saving your life someday)?

/25-time blood donor, as of Saturday :)

Well I ticked the box once I hit 18.
Did the blood donor thing as well, got my Silver Donors badge (25) somewhere.
Fran got her Gold Donors badge (50) a few years ago.
Now she can\'t donate either blood or organs due to having cancer and it\'s treatment.

But there is sometehing that most people don\'t realise (and I certainly didn\'t until recently) is that an organ donation only has a limited lifespan.
A colleague of mine\'s father had a Kidney transplant twelve years ago and afterwards maintained a healthy lifestyle. However after 10 years it started to fail and eventually he died.
Now I\'m not 100% sure on this but I have been told that after 1 transplant, you can forget the chances of A) another or B) the possibility of the body not auto rejecting it.
Now 10 years isn\'t a lot but if it gives a child 10 years with their parent, it\'s not a problem for me.

i guess you guys haven\'t seen the figures on where organs go and into what sort of people.

health care costs billions. people who abuse their bodies or just want to hang in there for a year or two more are the biggest culprits. if you enable them to live by giving them organs you are costing me money.

i might not be paying directly but insureance and/or medicare costs continue to rocket up but i\'m not utilising the healthcare system any more.

i have two cousins that have broken bones in their hands that need grafts. one of them can wait, it was his own stupid falut. the other has three bones in his hand that need work, he has been waiting for 2 years now. he is supposed to be one of the people propping up the medicare system with his taxes but instead of fixing him so he can work better he waits in line while 70 olds get hip replacements. they could barely walk before they broke their hip. why do they need a new one? a double whammy, costs for the elderly in dubious operations and one less person to help pay for it.

i have no say on what happens to my organs after i give them up. i don\'t want to give an alchaholic a new liver. i don\'t want to give new lungs to a smoker. it doesn\'t matter a whole lot to me that they mostly mend their ways and take better care of themselves.

i also do not what to enable people with terminal congential defects to reproduce which life sustaining transplants can give. i know people personally that have done just this thing. hang in there for a few years to give a child to their spouse to remember them by.

true there are some procedures i\'m ok with and would gladly give up my remains for. but since i can\'t make those desiscions i have to opt out.

Denying to help someone (even though it doesn\'t cost you anything) because it might help someone who, according to yourself, might not deserve it is in my opinion a very backwards way of thinking. With that way of reasoning you\'ll soon come to the conclusion that you can\'t help anyone with anything.

I have no problem with my organs going to someone who might have a self-inflicted condition. The chances are (at least where I live) that people with more \"legit\" conditions will be considered first (and these are quite many). It is better to use something that is usable than to let it rot.

The thought of not been a donor because someone who doesn\'t deserve it may get it is a selfish train of thought and exactly why there is a shortge of organs etc that causes the waiting lists....

I cannot give blood due to a blood condition I have but I sure am grateful to anyone that does.. as for organs well I think everyone in my family ae donors and around five years ago my Grandfather had a lung transplanted .. He passed away 18 months ago but the little time extra the transplant gave him saw him see the final Grandchild get married as well as the birth of his second granddaughter and first grandson...There\'s more to life than wether or not a person is paying towards taxes whilst alive...Yeah taxes piss me off but even more are pople that always say I\'M paying for them.......We are all paying taxes we all always will ..The rationale of people self inflicting injuries or illnesses is rubbish.. I mean a squaddie who nowingly signs up for service and knows he will be in harms way needs a ew liver due to an inury received at war..does he not deserve help...

There are far bigger wastes of our combined money out there than the health service.

One of our esteemed ministers fairly recently had a liver transplant. Due to the short period of time she\'d waited, there were investigations and allegations that she\'d jumped the queue. Then there were allegations that during previous hospitalisation, she\'d had alcohol sneeked into her ward. How true all this is, I don\'t know, but if it is all true, then there\'s someone undeserving who got pushed to the front of the waiting list. Still feeling warm & fuzzy?

If my organs would fit a child, then I\'d ask that my organs would be given to children. Till then, I\'ll give blood.
