i figure i should post a remotely relevant topic sometime,
and i just saw this: a letter to mr. goldfarb
interesting, no? it seems there is some negative sentiment still out there. what do y\'all think? is it a conspiracy? pandering? out of context? is what politicians think about gaming important at all? a negative PR stunt?
more information would be nice...

Wow - stunned by ignorance and public utterances.

He did post a retraction and apolgy, but in the day of the internet, that won\'t mean much. I did a bit of Googling on the responses out there and most come from military personel that play, admonishing him for his lack of knowledge as to what/who is entertaining the troops overseas.

Sad, sad day when D&D has to be used to disparage an opponent.

(of course my emotional response is to call him names, prove as a past military service-man that I play those games and never played in my moms basement.):cussing:

Ok, I admit I\'m dense at the best of times but I\'d like to know what the comments Mr. Goldfarb made were and I don\'t see anything on the link except the response letters to it. Am I missing something? My computer blocked a pop-up every time the page loaded (I tried several times to let it come through). Is that where the original comments were or could someone please post them here so I can read them? They must have been bad to illicit the responses they got but I do like to have the full picture of an event if I can. Thanks! :)

out of Goldfarb\"s fat mouth

quote:
It may be typical of the pro-Obama Dungeons & Dragons crowd to disparage a fellow countryman’s memory of war from the comfort of mom’s basement, but most Americans have the humility and gratitude to respect and learn from the memories of men who suffered on behalf of others.

my mom\'s basement was more of a hole in the ground because our house was old. we generally played in the dining room. its good to know that i also still live with my mommy?

hell quite a few of my d&d buddies are republicans. so this guy can take a shite for all i care. i\'ll be honest i would have voted for mccain if it was hillary against him, but i\'m cool with obama.

lets hope he cuts taxes on d&d games so we can afford to move out of mom\'s basement and move into the garage. lol

Cake or Death?
That\'s funny. My table has democrats, republicans and a few independents. I didn\'t know we were for Obama. Nice of them to finally tell us. lol

Blinkered ignorance and stereotyping, now who would have though that someone involved in politics would ever do that.

I\'m shocked! No wait I\'m not.

They\'re just acting like bullies... like they probably were in school anyway.

Now to play the devil\'s advocate:

If a stereotype is by and large true, is it still a stereotype?

I\'m a D&D player and the truth is we don\'t have very good PR, and I can count on one hand the amount of \"normal\" people I know who play D&D in comparison to the Cheeto munching, Mountain Dew swilling, hygienically challenged, socially inept players I know.

With the McCain campaign smearing Dungeons and Dragons players, Wired\'s Threat Level blog is asking its readers to come up with character descriptions or Monster Manual blurbs for McCain:

1st Level Fighter / 14th Level Aristocrat by (+5, Troll)

His stat block is STR 12, INT 9, WIS 9, DEX 9, CON 10, CHR 14, adjusting for age. His Bluff skill is maxed, but he has just one rank in Knowledge (Religion) and no ranks in Knowledge (Economics). He was only a fighter for a short time, but he brags about those days to anyone who doesn\'t intentionally fail their Listen check. He managed to charm an aristocratic lass into marriage to make his fortune, though he had to leave his first wife to do so.

Overlord McCainnister the Brute by Sam

This perennially battle-weary creature thrives on animosity and fear; it wields a Fox Cloak of Deception with a +10 stun against nearby intelligent creatures. Sporting long, tentacled arms, its impressive reach gives it a +5 luck in debates. Sadly, this creature is rarely found in the wild; it is usually paired as a familiar to the Horn-toothed Lobbyist.

I don\'t know what to say... except I\'m not sure what D&D has to do with Obama OR McCain.

Yeah.. there are stereotypes that are by large true that does not make them less stereotypes. The question is should you use terms derogatory in that way? You can probably find a number of reasons yourself why that would be detrimental to the people, kids etc. involved with the hobby and how it may affect people wanting to start the hobby.

It\'s just bullying that\'s what it is. Just because someone smells bad, is ugly and vertically challenged you can\'t greet the person \"hey you dwarf-with-a-face-that only-a-mother-could-love. Did I mention you smell of pee?\" That\'s evil, Dave!

I don\'t really have a problem with the stereotype of \'gamers\' being overweight socially inept goombas...cause it\'s kinda true.

I *do* have a problem with associating all gamers with Obama. lol

I remember reading a article in Dungeon magazine and at the end there was a small caption \"This adventure is dedicated to X, who went back into the world trade center to find me. You dont always need dice to be a hero\".
