Practice Sculpts

((*I\'ve decided that, since I\'m actually working on multiple practice sculpts currently, I\'d post them all in here rather than create new topics))

Well, sadly, cool mini has become a site I visit less than I probably ought to, so I\'m starting this on here a little late in the project, but not too late. (I should probably mention that I have a terrible habit of not finishing projects)

Well, four months in Florida learning how to cut and shape metal for the government and I\'m bored. How could I be bored of the white sandy beaches and clear Gulf waters? Well, the white sand is actually what\'s known as Quartz and works like aluminum foil in an oven, cooking you on the bottom while you roast the top, and the clear water just means it\'s all the easier to see the jellyfish, man-o-wars, and sharks.

So in the mean time I\'m building up my sculpting ability with a full scratch sculpt. I\'m not too concerned with what it turns out as, but it acts as a good medium for working up my GS skills. Any advice on how to improve my skills would be helpful.

So, without further procrastination here\'s some shots of da boss as he\'s turned out so far, starting with some early pics. (In order to save some of those with slower connections and to save bandwidth I\'m going to keep the early pics as links)

I started with just a torso, I know, probably not the best or most well thought out place to start but I\'m doing this to see where it goes.

Eventually I built him some hands to go with those stumps

Then, after some debate on various forums and within my mind, I decided to change the pose a bit to be more accommodating of the stance I want him in.

And here\'s where I am now, looking at completing the legs, building the torso up a bit more, and working out a few details in general with his construction.

C&C and tips are most welcome.

This one\'s the beginning of a Chaos Dwarf. I tend to have an on/off relationship with the Chaos Dwarfs. I find the somewhat blank slate of creating an updated look for the chaos stunties fun to play around with.

This one\'s an older one that I worked on before (a concept, one-piece body for casting into a regiment).

As per usual, any comments, sculpting tips, or criticism could only help.

Hello again, I come bearing updates. (Yeah, I\'m terrible at doing it frequently)

Did a lot of work on the legs and some detail work on the torso for my warboss.

Some nice squigfur-lined boots help add to the feral look, and helpfully cover an otherwise drab leather strap holding his armor.

Going for a bit of a steampunk look for some of the boss\'s bionics. Which means vents, dials, and all sorts of clutter (Which all looks perfectly orky anyways!).

Ah! And the boss\'s new belt-fed holdout shotgun ammo belt.

As for the Chaos Dwarf, he\'s actually gone through quite a lot of advancement.

The dent in the beard is for his hand, which will be holding a tower shield for him. The tentacle thing coming out of his shoulder is actually the beginnings of his other arm. The Cthulhu-esq helmet actually came about by accident. I made a basic helm and kept going from there, adding more and more as I went.

Very true
I wish I had talent in that area.
So do I, it would make getting to the level I\'m aiming for a lot easier lol

Now where was I? Ah yes, time for another overdue check-in.

The Warboss\'s right leg is getting a nice feral ork steam punk job. I still need to add to it, work out the hip joint on it, and connect it to the other leg, but this is how it\'s turned out so far.

And here\'s a bit of a better look at the armor on his left leg.

some of the edges are slightly \'soft\'. don\'t forget you can always go back and sharpen them with a scalpel

Yep, I plan on doing just that on a couple of places as soon as I get a little closer to what I\'ll consider \"done\"

On a further note
Da Boss is here! He\'s so close to being done it\'s almost painful. After working on his bionik leg a bit more, attaching the legs, and building him a lower body I\'m almost done. All that\'s left is a bit more detail work and adding a few sections here and there and he\'ll be ready for painting...as soon as I can get to my paints, that is. Right now he has to be propped up with some cork boards to stop him from simply tipping over. Oh yeah, designing a base around that is going to be fun.

That flat part you see on the back of his elbow is reserved for some extra bionik-y bits, though I still haven\'t decided what.

I was thinking of adding a loincloth to him, but I\'m not sure if it\'s becoming too over-used or not on warboss models.

i say no loin cloth. i hate them. but thats just me. i wouldn\'t leave the sharpening till it\'s finished. some areas may be difficult to get to. or you could cock it up and have to re do parts

Decided against the loin cloth as well, I want him \"Steampunk Barbarian\" Feral, not \"Tarzan of the Jungle\" Feral. I\'m working on sharpening some of the edges, part of which means deciding what to sharpen and what to leave rounded.

On another note, I, fairly randomly, decided to pick up a minor project. This one\'s for one of my re-occuring characters in Shadowrun, a street-mage. It\'s rough and needs some smoothing at this point, but I like how it\'s turning out.

he\'s got a good feel to him. you can save a lot of time by getting him fairly smooth before the putty cure though
