printed 3D sculpture of Brock Lesnar

Great job, Milosh. What sort of debate did you cause?

The debate was about wether or not computer 3D scuplting is really sculpting. I put him in a category as a collaboration between me (painter) and Mariano (sculptor) for scratch built figures. I displayed images of Mariano's 3D computer scuplt hoping to spur a discussion about the topic of 3D printing and the future of our hobby. The discussion I wanted did indeed happen but it was pretty bizzare how some people reacted. the old guard insisted it wasn't true sculpting because putty wasn't in the hands of a sculptor. Others (including myself) argued that it is sculpting because all of the same artistry and knowledge of anatomy still has to be present. Some people thought it was a scanned image that was then printed in 3D. I could have just entered him in the painting only category as just another figure, but what fun would that have been?

I'd be curious the hear other peoples views to this argument.

Total agreement with your views on the subject and congrats for the medal! Awesome piece. Also it was great that you are at the forefront of the discussion since you are so well thought of at the show! The only problem I would ever have is if the person entering did not give the artist credit for the work.

Hey Flagg - thanks for that info - def. will try the chainlink fence in the modeling - great tips!

I feel like it is sculpting as much as any other kind. I suspect that being able to sculpt well digitally would also transfer to putty, clay, or whatever. But I don't know, as I cannot do either. I will say that this sculpt is way better than the computer sculpted crap that comes from GW. This statue of Lesnar looks like it is hand sculpted, but the new WoC minis look computer generated to me. I don't get why people have a problem with digital sculpting, as a painter as long as I get a cool mini with sharp detail I don't care whether a sculptor got his hands dirty or not.

Wow, just caught this WIP. Well done and congrats Mllosh. The free Hand ( especially the back tat and pant legs) are absolutely spot on.

Great figure! Were you at the Atlanta Toy Soldier Show this past weekend? I missed this year for the first time in years. Sorry I didn't get to see this in person.

Thanks guys for the comments.

Yes, it is a very interesting debate and I have seen 3D computer sculpting live and know what it takes to make sculpture come to life. I firmly believe it takes the same amount of skill to sculpt in the computer as it does with putty. I will be entering another model sculpted by Mariano at the lone star show next month so I expect the debate to rage on.

Yes I was at Atlanta with this figure and 12 other painted figures. It would have been excellent to have met you there. Hopefully next year we can get together sir.
