Proof that I do indeed paint

Okay he may have taken me half a year to actually finish, but that\'s what happens when you have a new baby in the house.

Here\'s my latest work:

I have to say I am very happy with the way he turned out and the improvement I have shown since my last Templar.

You can take a look at my last Templar here: Old Templary Voting Link

EDIT: based on a couple sugestions I changed the background to a white grey instead of blue.

Okay this is my third try at writing this as I keep getting some kind of error. Sorry that this is shorter then the previous two attempts.

Thanks for the compliment!

The base was Scab Red mixed with some Black to that it was almost solid black. This was built up in layers to pure Scab. Then I started adding Blood Red and worked that up in layers to pure Blood Red. This is where I have always stopped in the past, and had passable reds. This time around I decided to go a bit further and added P3: Heartfire to the mix. This is a orangey red colour that looks like this:

.

I found the Heartfire worked wonders. The added pigment in the P3 paints seemed to really brighten the red even in a very watery mix. That was the biggest secret I learned from the good folks on this Forum. Many near transparent layers of very watered down paint in order to get a smooth blend. It worked wonders for me on the reds (unfortunately not as well on the White). I seriously couldn\'t tell you how many layers there are, as I just kept going until it looked right.

Doesn\'t look to bad. The red does look pretty strong. The only thing I\'ll say by way of criticism is that you\'re going to score lower than you really should because there was not effort at all put into the base. You\'d probably add at least a full point to your rating by simply adding some dirt and grass.

I was thinking that myself. There\'s a few reasons for the plain base. It is filled and painted black but that\'s about it. The excuse reason would be that Rackham doesn\'t paint their bases so why should I. I don\'t buy that one myself though. The actual reason is that I can\'t decide what to do for it. I bought these guys to use them in Hybrid. Thus they should probably have some kind of dirty Driz techy looking base. The problem with this is I use most of my minis for Roleplaying, and 90% of my fantasy minis are on traditional mud/grass bases. So I haven\'t decided what to do. I planned on re-uploading this guy once I have the base done and he\'s dullcoated.

I like the shield, the red \'pops\' off the white background and is highlighted nicely. The main spot for improvement to me is the sword, it needs some harsher transition from the \'gold\' to the \'steel\' colors to separate them more though the highlight on the blade is done quite well.

Yes indeed - improvement. The whites are a GREAT improvement. You\'ve nailed a very difficult color to work with there.

I feel the red goes too dark (I know you cannot win.) to near black. Stopping the shadow at a very dark red might have been a bit better.

As to the base, consider cobblestone? That would work in tech/fantasy/historical.

Thanks again for the compliments.

MPJ - for a harder transition would you suggest some blacklining or something more subtle? I think one of the problems is I used silver to highlight the gold, and well the blade used the same silver (a 1980s pot of Mythril Silver).

Airhead - I love the cobblestone idea. One problem, how the heck would I do that with a mini already attached to the base? I worry that by trying to remove the mini I would damage the paint job. I don\'t think that red would be easy to touch up. I could maybe try balls of WhiteStuff (what I happen to have on hand) but I worry his feet would look sunken. Any ideas on the best way to add coblestone after the fact?

After the fact without busting him out of that slotta? Tough to do. You could just paint cobblestones on. Or put him in a dirty pothole with some cobblestones around the pothole.
