It was intended this time. Cole-Slah nipped at my ankles the last time I posted here.

Wow.. thats a good justification.. someone replys to something you write so its OK to patronise them.

Ok. \"most ignorant post to date\" \"snowflake\" etc. I don\'t like the way this thread is going now. Keep it civil, keep it cool.

Yeah, you people!

This is a civil town hall meeting, and to prove that it is civil, I have strapped an AK-47 to my back, and am carrying no less than 7 concealed weapons (number 4 is extremely uncomfortable).

It\'s a good debate, and high spirited, so lets not drag it down.

I told you to skip the battle axe, or at least carry it visibly.

being an american... precisely the one who started this topic. i just have to say i also get tired of everyone thinking we (americans) are gun toting fools. i for one dont have a gun. dont plan on using one, or see a need for one. that is until the zombie apoc. but until then its fine. as for gun control, bahh... its such a mixed bag of shite that no one knows anymore whats wrong or right. what i am talking about was a person....(wait im sorry since then i found 2 more guys were toting assault rifles at this meeting. )who should not be carrying a weapon and a loaded one at that at a meeting with a president. he was making a statement and i seriously doubt he walks about town with an assault rifle slung around his waist while sipping on an espresso from starbucks and checking his email. the problem is execution of said problem.

we are using FEAR to scare people. this is not right and just out right pisses me off. there is not a hidden conspiracy to control the nations supply of squirrels through health care or some other stupid thing. we start with a good idea of universal health care and some disagree. thats fine and all, but scare tactics are just stupid. did you know in 1915 when the idea of socialized medicine was first started, lobbyists took out huge articles in newspapers saying that the german leader was behind it all. they made ridiculous claims and had no proof of mein furhrer doing this. which in the end we found out was wrong...and the german chancellor just wanted to fight us. not change our healthcare.

so in the end this isnt about guns. its about fear.... and it just pisses me off. fear might have worked in the past, but i can only hope mankind has evolved enough to realize when fear tactics are a desperate attempt by a group of people who have no other way of battling something they are against because they lack the intelligence or diction to stop the change.

change happens and when we fail to allow change we find ourselves repeating the past.

No you\'re too young, I\'d get accused of corrupting a Minor.

Two points:
1.) The AR-15 the man was carrying is not an assault rifle. It is a semi-automatic carbine. The same thing as a hunting rifle. (Only scarier looking, with less range, less stopping power and less accuracy.)
Assault rifles are capable of being shot on full automatic, which, to my knowledge, is very hard to acquire on the civilian models.
\"Assault Rifle\" is a buzzword, used by the anti-gun lobbyists and the ignorant to inject fear into the debate.

2.) Fear. Fear is a tool used by the anti-gun lobby to cow the masses into their view point.
I fear a man standing with an AR-15 strapped to his back far less than I fear the sensationalist journalist with an agenda.

I personally don\'t want to shoot anyone, I will, however, to protect me and mine.
After going through both the LA Riots, and Hurricane Katrina, as well as living in an area where hurricanes often disrupt our society for weeks at a time, it would be foolish of me not to be prepared in the event these things should show up on my doorstep.
Prepare for the worst and hope for the best is my motto.

Another argument I hear is that the police should be the only one who need guns.
I say to that: Bullsh!t.
Almost everyone I know who owns guns are actually better shots and better at gun safety than most of the cops I know. We all go to the same ranges.
Also if you remember, it was the police in New Orleans that were looting and instantly became uniformed gangs the instant civilization stopped.

dave: was waiting for you :). ok fear....

plain and simple i wasnt talking about the anti gun lobbyists using fear. these men were part of the nra. they were exercising their 2nd ammendment rights. whatever. they were showing that they were against the healthcare reform, by toting guns. i dont know about you..but a gun generally makes a person feel uncomfortable when its slung over an arm and is quite big and shooty.

and then the what ifs. what if they had a guy there pull the gun and shoot someone else? there are just too many variables to consider...and in the end..stupid fear is what is thought of the most.

the government is not a huge evil corporation....it is just a poorly ran company..... its not like bush during katrina was rubbing his hands together all mr. burns like....and laughing. it was just poorly run at the time. thats all. and then cops who turn into gangs. ok ill give you that....but what did they use? billy clubs. yelling? no guns..... to instill fear. a gun is used for one thing.... killing and fear. dont try to tell me it isnt used for anything else.

i dont ever remember using a gun to shave or watch my kid with.

QFT.

This whole thread makes me want to smash my head into the desk. Or laugh despairingly. Or maybe both.

See, you are using your fear and emotions to try and push the agenda.
You are projecting your fear and distrust of others.

Guns are tools used for killing. Hammers are tools used for nailing. Just because I OWN or EVEN carry a hammer does not mean I use it for every situation or even at all. Hell, I may go through life in which I never have to use a hammer, but It\'ll be a good day when that rogue nail pops up and I have just the tool for the job on hand.

Simply put: I believe it is better to have it and not need it, than need it and not have it.

I live in a state where open carry is normal and see guns all the time, it does not bother me. A guy standing with an AR-15 at a town hall meeting here would not invoke fear, curiosity, perhaps.
I used to leave a rifle and a shotgun in the rifle rack in my truck during high school, never an incident.

Guns have not created this fear.
Sensationalized Media has and you\'ve bought in to it.
This, in my eyes, was an interesting social experiment.
It shows exactly who lives in fear.

Self defence. The police do not have an obligation to protect you.

Sports (I can name at least three handgun sporting associations, 3 shotgun and one rifle.)

Hunting - putting meat on the table. There were lots of years when I was young that the rabbit, squirrel and deer in the freezer helped the budget.

There\'s \"anything else.\" and then some.

How about insuring that the government listens to the populous? That is the whole premise behind the second amendment.

To be fair, the distinction between a military assault rifle and the civilian model of same is slim. The only difference in some only being single shot vs. single shot and burst.

Same ammo, same basic build & accuracy (civilian models are sometimes more accurate than a typical military version in fact) so basically the same

Even without after-market mods or tweaking of parts to add burst capability or full-auto fire the swift action means you can fire literally as fast as you can cycle the trigger.

Fair enough. But exactly the same is true of the NRA and other pro-gun groups and lobbyists.

Incidentally I agree completely with you that the police shouldn\'t be the only ones with guns. Quite apart from anything criminals get their weapons no matter what, removing legal means for law-abiding citizens to acquire firearms does virtually nothing to curb this.

Risking going off-topic again I can\'t help it but comment on this. When about 2 years ago four armed policemen shout 50 bullets into a car with three people, police was accused of unprofecionalism because of the way they conducted this whole business. Nobody noticed that despite 50 bullets shot two out of three people in a car actually survived and the cops were shooting at point blank range. What if there was indeed a gun inside of this car...

Ron White noticed. He used it in a comedy routine.
He basically said we should drop off cops with a roll of quarters at the arcade, because his son could shoot better.
Much like teachers, though, I don\'t expect us to get a better caliber of police officers until we\'re willing to pay them more.

edit: Just recently here, we had a cop get the everloving crap beat out of him by a 300 lb. brute hopped up on crystal meth.
The only reason the cop is still alive is because a civilian with a conceal and carry permit shot the assailant before he could shoot the cop with his own gun.

that is the most inane thing i have heard today. i dont live in fear...or fear these idiots who bring guns to meetings like this. im stating the exact opposite...its not fear that makes me say these things. its the fact that when we use herd mentality human beings do dumb things. fear is used to control the masses and i find it appalling.

im afraid? bullshite.

now if a man has a gun right in front of me, yes i will feel very uncomfortable and would not like it. i know your saying you want to be preemptive, and thats fine...im not talking about gun control...

im talking about using guns in a way to instill FEAR into a topic that doesnt need to have it put in there in the first place.

edit: on a side note... the main reason i dont say things on here is because you have one group on one side and another on the other side. neither side rarely gives any way in their own beliefs so i guess this is a social experiment that doesnt work.

evildave: please watch how you state things. sometimes you can come across as a know it all and you sound as if you belittled me earlier. this is not the way to continue a conversation so i respectfully end my opinions on this and give the floor back to you.

But this is exactly the point we soft lefties ( :p) are trying to make. You don´t run around with ahammer all the time. You pick it up when you plan to use it - either because you want to build something or you´re checking the fence for warped nails and such.

The same thing applies to guns. You pick them up when you plan to use them - why else do it? And guns are used for shooting. So when I see a man with a gun, my logical conclusion is that he´s walking around with a gun because he plans to use it - for shooting - why else is he carrying it?
