I don\'t think the vast majority of drinkers in Britain (particularly the younger drinkers) are ready for 24 hour licencing! We\'re just not culturally ready for it. Just look at your local town/city centre on a Friday/Saturday night. Now imagine that going on all night and into the next day! Not a pleasant thought. And just think of all the extra strain on ambulance staff, casualty units, and police.
I dont think thats a valid excuse, you can only throw up and end up in hospital once a night, and the theory is if there isnt just 1 set time when everybody gets let out all at once then there would not be the same level of trouble.
I think there may be a small teething time of a month or 2 as everybody went mad with it, but i think that it would calm down pretty fast

The only reason that there are so many problems is the amount of binge drinking that goes on.
Now among the guys I hang out with, I am one of the faster drinkers of the group. When I went out with my cousins I was 2 pints behind by the third round.
If you can drink all night you don\'t need to drink as quickly. I reckon that after 3 months there would be fewer incidents as people got used to the whole, \"hey, we don\'t have to drink as much as we can before 11, we can stay up all night if we want\"

Whenever I go out with my mates from the UK I find the same. I quickly fall behind in the drink count. Here the bars are open until 3 - 4 AM, so there\'s no \"rush\" to get your drink on... The bust last longer and your don\'t get sick sa much when you keep a slow steady pace...

You are right...
But the reason for that lies largely in the stupid laws we have laboured under. It will take more than a couple of months, but it will happen. The breweries could help by not encouraging binge drinking and loutish behaviour. I am thinking of so called \'sports bars\' here:flip:
I think it goes far further back than the Licensing Laws try back to the Puritanical period of the \"Commonwealth\" (Oliver Cromwell et al) a lot of the cultural \'hang ups\' we British have are based from the enforced \'Mores\' of the period. (as well as the Hypocrtical Victorian period)
It accounts for:
Our inability to rationalise anything to do with nudity as anything other than smutty. (Hence the Gutter press\'s delight in utilising semi-naked women as marketing tools on one hand and then condeming it on the other.)
Our cultural hypocricy on sex and sexual behaviour. (It\'s ok for a fella to \'boff\' as many women as he wants, but when the shoes on the other foot..........)
Our Drinking habits, If we\'d followed the cutural pattern of our French neighbours we\'d probably never have the level of Binge Drinking that we do.

Is the UK as bad as the USA?
I grew up in a household where alcohol had its place. When we had Italian food we drank wine with dinner; with saurkraut and sausages we had beer; after a long day of yard work and house repair on the way home my dad would stop for a cold 6-pack because he had a wife and 4 kids so each of us got a beer. To this day I find it hard to drink beer without having worked up a sweat or eaten a sausage first.
Most of my college friends on the other hand grew up in families where alcohol was forbidden to the children (though the parents often drank it in front of them) and when they got a taste of independence they drank themselves stupid.
Sounds like the UK is similar and I\'m glad my dad was a francophile.

In a pub, a pint of decent beer is the best part of $5. The equivalent from a supermarket will cost $1.
Despite silly \'opening hours\' Alcohol is freely available in the UK and I would say that people who don\'t drink are in the minority. The thing is now, most people just indulge themselves at home.
