Hello all,

This is one of my better paint jobs and so far its been rated 6.6 (31 votes). Which I agree with. What I don't know is what do I need to do better? How do I get up into that 7 yo 8 range?

Thanks

I would give this a 7, so for me you are there already. Some things you will be hearing will be firstly better pics, more in focus anyway. Also, your sealant seems glossy, a matte finish might get you a bit better score too. Those are the only glaring things I can see...your weathering and armor is amazing.

Well First off one of the things hampering you is the photographs.
1: They are huge and at this size any and all errors will stand out.
2: You've got a lot of "out of focus" points in the main field of view which a lot of people find "off putting".

Because of the size of the pictures all the painting techniques are readily visible and so the painted damage shows up clearly and therein lies a slight problem. Painting damage in coloured armour requires a false shadow line. Basically a thin coat of black before you apply the metal. this will give a much stronger effect and "trick the eye" into seeing that the metal is below the painted surface.

A couple of quick thoughts for upping the oomph of this model...

The rats on the floor all have flat black eyes & some of the teeth don't appear to be painted. The red rats tail is only half painted.

There appears to be no shading or highlights on Queek's toenails & on the biggest one a smudge of cream paint has crept up onto his foot where the shading line is. His eyes are unpainted (green hint perhaps but I want a glint not a hint). The green gem/warpstone on his necklace isn't working, there's a couple of great tutorials on this site for gemstones, I used them recently myself! The heavily shaded line on his right big toe makes it look as though it's falling off. Lots more definition in both shading & colour required to sort out the rope from the wood on his garden fence, I'd suggest letting the wood highlight toward greyer & the rope toward the greeny yellows. The hands on the fence remind me of Mickey Mouse's gloves, though that may be fault of the sculpt! Watch a few episodes of CSI & pay attention to the corpses colours! Unless you can stomach a Google corpse search, which I can't!

I could waffle on but I hope you can see how various areas can be worked on to improve the overall effect.

On my personal voting critearia I'd say this is a healthy 6 pushing for 7. 8 means making me really search for a niggle rather than being able to list a few, ie, technically excellent! 9 & 10 are reserved for models I actually like as well as being proficiently painted!

Lots of ambition on show, you just need to practise & refine your techniques. Keep up the good work that man :good:

Cheers, B.
