Rackham vs GW

I love all miniatures.

Having said that I have gotten some truly horrible casts from Rackham. When I try to remove the flash/cast from the model I have to hold my breath so as not to snap their legs or arms off. Rackham is expensive, but you need fewer minis to start playing (generally speaking) GW has a lot of support for their figs/games that I like.

Rackham sculpts are beautiful but I have repainted/thinned the Red Lioness 3X and have bent her repeatedly just trying to paint her. I can appreciated the exaggerated anatomy on the female models but the overlarge weapons really turn me off.

GW sculpts may be a bit cartoony but even mediocre painters can put a decent paint job on them and send\'em off to war.
All the filigree/fussiness on Rackham minis just magnifies bad painting.

Like someone said, this is comparing apples and oranges. I like more GW stuff than Rackham stuff, but then again, GW has a much bigger range so that is hardly surprising, and Rackham doesn\'t do any sci-fi stuff. As to casting quality, I haven\'t noticed any real difference, and Rackham minis are thinner and more brittle than GW minis, which can be annoying. Both companies produce cool stuff, and both companies produce pretty crappy stuff.

I do see the valid point of your post Alexander, but if you want to compare their minis, why bring up that Rackham has better painters? That has no relevance, and frankly, GW have had some very nice painters in their time...

As to whom is best? Individual observations and preferations, this is not something that will make people any smarter, any more enlightened or feel fuzzy inside. Think that is why some may consider this Trolling.

basicaly what I\'m trying to say is, the subject is worthless as you will have half agreeing, and half disagreeing.... no point... :)

I seldom feel more enlightened after reading/posting in \"General Discussion\". I am definitely not smarter; but I laugh like hell.

Not even the Red Lioness? If any single mini has ever told me to buy it, it was the Red Lioness. And what about Mira the Reckless / Misericord?

As for GW, well, it\'s not just that the Dark Elves have a soft spot with me, they truly have some of the best minis that GW have produced.
Damn Gavin, We sure have the same taste. :D

Out of the few Rackham I own, those were the first two. Then I also have the GW dark Elves as well (gotta love them witches). ;)

I prefer Privateer Press.
Just something about those clunky warjacks.

I really haven\'t seen too many Rackhams I truly feel I must have.
I like some of the wolfen, but I generally hate almost every female mini they put out.
The proportions are all wrong.

Drink!

I like the Cynwall elves far more than any of the 3 Warhammer ones. They look more fey and ethereal and more mysterious.

well whoever is bether i personally still gratefull with gamesworkshop, ofcourse not all of theyr miniatures are eccellent
but imho gw is the company that begin all of this,i begin to paint theyr miniatures and i\'m still painting those.
also don\'t forget that there are not much others miniatures as the 40k ones if you exclude those of warmachine that actually personally i don\'t like or urban war.

i love the huge opportunity of custumization you can do without sculpting anything imho you can\'t do that with rackam, and gw metal actually i think is the best material.

it\'s thrue rakham sculpts are really greacefull compared to the majority of the gw prints but that cause in result such lionesse roouge that always broke her feet while you are gona paint that...a bit annoyng imho

Yes. Drink.

But we all know that GW is is an inferior product. Now lets save all of our money and give it to Rackham, Privateer Press, and Dark Age (Brom) minatures.:)

it\'s all down to personal taste.

different lines from different companies for different people.

you might as well go back to your child hood and argue about who\'s dad is best.
totaly pointless.

and for the record, gw didn\'t start it. there have been toy soldiers long before any of us were born.

this was brought to you by the grumpy git corperation :D

When it comes to esthetically pleasing i would have to go with rackham on that one, their stuff looks more display-worthy. But for sheer character, the GW stuff takes the cake. Most of the Morheim line, with some of the bloodbowl and Necromunda stuff is VERY flavorful, and when it comes to sturdiness the GW stuff looks \'chunkier\' so they probably stand up to gaming a little better. they both have their pros and cons.

I just like GW style more. Agreed, Rackham sculpting is extremely impressive, and in some cases it is far superior to GW\'s sculpting. I think the detail is overwhelming though, too much detail crammed onto a small mini makes it look overdone IMHO. GW\'s sculpts have great character, and I am constantly seeing minis that \"grab\" me as has been discussed before. I think the Rackham sculpts are uglier. Having not bought any Rackham minis, I can\'t talk about casting quality etc. but GW\'s casting has never been a major problem for me.
Anyway, ultimately it is all personal taste that decides which is better.

Why do I always forget about Necromunda? House Escher have a character that is equalled almost nowhere else, Rackham included. When I think \'technopunk\', it\'s Escher that comes to mind. Hmmmm.... there\'s an idea for a conversion: Escher with notebooks... :D

For me there are various means to compare the two companies products.

As (primarily) a painter these days I see that Rackham have some superb sculptures which give greater scope for expressive paintwork. In couterbalance GW have started to bring out some models which reflect the increase in Painting interest. (Wood Elves are my case in point).

For Gaming GW definitley have an edge for the robustness of their figures. (as long as the arms etc are pinned).

As to the anatomy of the Rackham Females, well I can say that they are within the human \'Norm\' as I work with someone who is as slender and tall as a Fianna.

However to me the question is kind of moot, as to be honest I buy whatever strikes my fancy, GW, Rackham, Reaper, Iron Wind, Spyglass, Hasslefree, Celtos, Andrea. OK I\'m admitting to Magpie Syndrome\" here. :D

Someone (\"gkmork\" ?) raised the point that GW started the hobby. Not quite accurate, they took the existant hobby and made it what it is today, but before them there were Napoleonics and very few Fantasy figures.
I used to buy Hinchcliffe miniatures (back in the 70\'s) which were 1/72 scale Napoleonics and they were minimal detail. The majority of figures with detail were 54mm and the best (at that time ) were made by a company called \"New Hope Design\" who worked Hand in glove with Osprey Publishing to produce top quality sculpts based on their illustrations.
New Hope Design were based in Rothbury , Northumberland and I managed to visit their factory shop a couple of times. There\'s something about buying a figure and getting it still warm from the mould. :D

Thinking GW started the hobby is a common mistake really, as they are, and have been for a long time, biggest miniature company out there (didn\'t say best, just biggest!) and I still swear to GW, but coming to CMON really opened my eyes to other companies, that have awesome minis, including Rackham, Dark Age, Crocodile and many others.

As I said before, it\'s all about personal style and what you feel for. Some people like skaven, some like ogres, I hate both :p... well.. you get my point :D

GW have become shackled by their own vision of what their universes look like. Their refusal to take a financial chance on releasing new games with different imagery will simply ensure that all we get to see is the same old stuff churned out year on year.

BORING!!

Well I have to admit I´ve never painted anything but GW, but as far as it concerns me I´ve never felt the urge to but stuff from rackham or any other company (it´s also not quite easy here in Germny to get it). I agree the rackham sculpts look quite iimpressive but I´m generally not a big fan of fantasy, and the rough, blocky style of GW appeals more to me.
I also don´t think it´s a problem GW is mostly continuing existing themes, there is change in 40k for example, just have a look at the 1st and 2nd ed marines or orcs compared to today´s ones - the style is quite different.
