Rant! Women vs. My minis

The Artisan

I consider myself quite lucky as well. My wife wouldn\'t dare give me a hard time about painting. This hobby has paid for a number of dinners and over half the cost of our honeymoon. It will also likely pay for a big screen tv.

Boy do I feel lucky...

Eric, I feel your pain, I\'ve been there before...with my parents and family.

But now I\'m a really lucky guy. I got my wife to start gaming with us and now she is really into it. So when I painted her up a mini for her to use she thought it was great. She\'s been very supportive of the hobby and even spends time with me reading the forums here and looking at the minis. She\'s even bought minis for me to paint!!!

She also just reminded me that she is my color checker too.

Eric I hope that you get as lucky as me and find someone who will support or at least understand and tolerate your hobby. Whatever you do DON\'T STOP PAINTING you talented SOB you... ;)

Cheers,
Grumb

P.S.- This from the wife, I\'m so glad this forum exists - it\'s been great for Scott to share this hobby and meet people all over the world (Hi Margo!). I can\'t wait for our basement remodel so that he\'ll have more room and the kids will have some space for painting as well.

To Eric - it\'s tough to share a person with a hobby, but you have to let them have their passions or they are not their whole self. There also have to be priorities. Right now I\'m glad he\'s got the time (and money) to have this hobby. (Beats the hell out of the sky-diving he did when we were dating!) When our son was going through chemo HE WAS THERE - and that\'s what mattered at that time. I\'m glad our life is boring now and that he can enjoy painting! (Can you tell who the chatty one in the marriage is?)

Thanks for the support Nathan, Grumb, Dawn, it does mean a lot. All the success stories are also very encouraging, I don\'t think I\'ll be giving up painting, or the hope of finding the right person any time soon. After another long talk (just ending now) I think I\'ve decided this was all for the best. I think the ability to come here and indulge in a little ranting has also kept me sane through it as well...

Thanks all,

-Eric

Eric, it looks like Katie hit the nail on the head! Too often in life we are driven by some compulsion to \"make things work out\". What I have found is that this view on life is a recipe for failure, since people rarely change, and any friction or lack of support only gets worse with time. If you decide to be with someone who is unsupportive of your hobbies, please do yourself a favor and ask why you are with them.

I had a very similar situation to yours last year. The woman I was dating always gave me a hard time whenever we stopped at my local mini shop to pick up the latest GW LOTR releases. Over time, the comments worsened to the point she was downright rude and hurtful in her critism of \"those people\" who were in the store enjoying themselves and playing the games they love. I took a long look at her and decided I didn\'t want to be with someone who couldn\'t accept that many people have different hobbies and as long as they are not hurting anyone, why shouldn\'t they be free to enjoy themselves as they see fit. The relationship ended very shortly there after since I felt I wanted someone in my life who was positive and supportive. Currently I am alone ( and much happier), however I am accepting applications from single US females. Feel free to write for information....

Quite happy to, old bean, I never thought you\'d ask. Upon reading your post, my artistic mind, working on planes far above the comprehension of most mundanes, hit upon a most wonderful idea...to amalgamate both your wishes into one, magnificent piece of art!

Tasteful, with smooth, flowing and elegant lines, it is truly a masterpiece. Note the emotion captured on your face, and the use of tone and proportion to indicate depth. Now, you may be thinking to yourself \"But Nelson, how could I dare resize or crop your drawing? Such a thing would be akin to blasphemy!\" Well, this may come as a suprise to you, but this is not my best work. Nevertheless, it is not everyday that Nelson deigns to pick up the pencil and draw. Please, above all, enjoy it, and don\'t worry about using it--it is no cheap knock-off, to be looked at once and discarded. No, even years later, I am sure you will still be finding new aspects to marvel at.

Avert your eyes lest it\'s glory blind you!! Eric, Dark Maiden

Really, I insist you use it as your avatar. Insist.
:bouncy: :D

(That was a good waste of homework doing time...)

HAHA, that\'s awesome, resize it to 50 pixels wide, and I\'ll use it...(for a short time at least)

Umm, honestly, as much as it would give me a sense of perverse satisfaction to see it as your avatar, I would recommend against that......:D

But hey, if you want to, make sure you crop as much excess space away as possible, so you can still see a bit of detail...Maybe just make it a head and shoulders shot of you smiting the bee or something. :)

I truely belive there are several soul mates for everyone out there, the trick is finding yours. The path is not an easy one and its very hard to get back up after you get your heart ripped out again and again. (and the pepper spray really stings) :( But the journey is really worth it, and if you stay true to yourself, you will learn from every painful, sad or unpleasant relationship you have. When you meet \"the one\" You will be a better friend, lover and partner and that person will want to accept you for who you are.
Eric, learn from this experience, listen to some moody music and brood for a while, then move on.

Going back to an earlier note, I\'d like to point out that I am male, but I\'ve never had green hair (although it has been black, purple red and blue) I don\'t have a bald head (well not quite yet, although the way things are going...).

I also rarely shout and I don\'t frown much, but other than that my avatar is an exact representation of me...

Yes, I agree, it would be great if you joined the community, Dawn!

@Eric: I think you\'re doing the right thing. Hobby is a big part of your life, and to me not respecting a hobby means not respecting the person who\'s involved in it.

My young lady friend makes me paint. She says \'go and paint now because you\'re pissing me off\'. So I go and paint. Or at least I would like to think I do but I can\'t be bothered mostly. So I wrestle her instead. But I did paint yesterday and it felt damned good.

I agree. Dump her.

It is an unfortunate fact that there are at least 8 men to every woman involved in gaming (or sci-fi or any other geeky hobby), but even if you can\'t find someone to share your hobby, you should be with someone who respects it -- and you by extension!

I\'m lucky - both my husband and I share our geek hobbies. (we\'ve both recently added WH to our list) He\'s done a lot of assembling and conversions for me, and I\'m doing most of the painting.

Good luck!

This isn\'t really half a bee...well yeah it is, he\'s got no stripes. But it\'s really cool, looks like a mix between a bee and an alien
