Rap: not even the rhyming is original :)

Found this site in my perusing of bizarre \"news\" items tonight. Seems that not only do rappers steal other people\'s music, they are not doing anything original with the rhyming either. :D

(it\'s called \"sampling\" when one \"artist\" steals another \"artists\" work. It\'s only \"stealing\" when an \"average person\" steals an \"artists\" work)

OK... enough \" \"s \" for today:p

I am not a fan of rap music. Not much anyway. But it I don\'t think they \"steal\" anyones music. A lot of artist have given rap/hip hop performers permission to use their music in sample.

Techno performers have used samples too. But no one says they steal music.

Not to mention; Didn\'t Vanilla Ice show that a rapper can\'t steal someone elses music and not get in trouble?

Just thought that link was interesting, the bit about \"stealing\" was more a commentary on the fact they don\'t compose their own music for the most part. I am far from an expert on rap.

They\'re just getting this, now?

There hasn\'t been a completely original rap song since the late 80\'s.

I mean, jeez... you can knock off 50 points of originality from any one of them that resorts to \'Raise your hands in the air -- and wave \'em like you just don\'t care\', or something to that effect.

Take off 10 more points for anything that has the words \'jump\' or \'shout\' in the title.

Any rap consisting of more than 15% cursing doesn\'t count as intelligent OR original (which eliminates 80% of rap).

And WHO DRESSES THESE PEOPLE????

Pull up your pants! Stop wearing your ball caps crooked. It doesn\'t look \'cool\', it makes your head look deformed! And put the knots of your bandana\'s in the BACK! YOU ARE NOT AUNT JEMIMA!

And buy shirts that fit, instead of looking like mini-dresses gone horribly wrong!

GAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH!!!!

*pant pant pant*

Hip hop has always been about other peoples music - DJ\'s have always \'sampled\' stuff with the scratches and breaks they use.

No problem with that. It\'s all the big bad homie shit I can\'t stand. All you have to do to make a rap record is wave your arms about in an agressive manner.

And have fat-arsed women hanging about.

And wear lots of shite jewellery.

Oh, you need a fellow homie in the background. Unfortunately, he\'s usually hard of hearing, because when he steps forward, all he says is either \'What?\' or \'Huh!?\'...

Occasionally you\'ll have a second \'backup\' homie. He\'s more positive though. He says \'Yeah!\'.

It\'s a shame more of them aren\'t involved in the gangland killings they seem so interested in.

Utter shite most of it!

Edit: Oh yeah, I forgot the trousers. Trousers that are so loose, you have 75% pant showing. To quote Denis Leary, \"Pull up your god damn pants shithead!\"

I like some hip hop... a lot of the new stuff is shite and is quite lame at times... old stuff is good though... NWA were there first!

I always thought they were degenerates. But also thought they\'d wasted a lot more than 600 years of progress and evolution.

Oh well, seems I was wrong about them, it\'s just the vocabulary that has slipped. Songs that consist of \"Uh-huh\", \"Yeah\", and, \"You tell \'em Jay\", have less communication potential than a series of australopithic grunts.

I hope that\'s not a racial slur?

lol I\'m impressed! It took 655 posts and an entire year and a half for someone to display their prejudice against South African Caucasians. I could write an essay to explain why I ought to be offended, but you\'re not worth the offense and it\'s not worth the effort. :)

I do realise my name might as well be Modderzero on these forums, but exactly who are you expecting to believe that? Me or everyone else? ;)

Some of the early rap was SORT OF interesting. There was a bit of musicality to it. Alot of what I hear now is talking with a cheesy drum track.

I think heavy metal is going down a similar road, musically speaking. It seems to being getting raw to the point of losing any \'musical flow\'\'. So thrashing harsh and screaming to such a brutal extreme that the operatic flow that was present in some of the older stuff is lost. I really like alot of metal but there is a point where it simply loses me. Rob Halford, Bruce Dickerson, Bonn Scott could do a scream and retain an emotion in it. They rode the edge yet didnt often fly off it. Now it seems to be simply scream your guts out (which isnt always bad) with no dileniation.

Maybe I\'m just being old and cynical, but so much of today\'s music lacks originality. Not just Rap and Heavy Metal.

Possibly because image and looks are the most important factors is most acts \'making it big\'.

I wonder if music today would be better if there was never been an MTV or a music video??

That and that fact that 95% of all songs now released seem to be covers of songs from 30 years ago, seriously ill be listen to a dance cd for six months and then find out the lyrics were taken from a song written in the 70\'s,

This whole image thing and sex sells is annoying too, eventually well get to the stage where a music video is just a full on porno with lyrics over the top...

good point!!

Ah yes, the infamous \'cover\' songs...It would be different if they\'d actually add something to the cover. Instead of just hacking it to pieces.

One quick exception, the other day I heard Queen Latifah do a cover version of the old hit \'California Dreaming\'. I\'m not a Queen Latifah fan at all, but was really impressed with that. Very cool stuff!

Yeah, i think it\'s wrong to rule out that all cover songs are bad, it\'s just very rare for a good one to be released, have you heard the new version of pinball wizard by Mcfly ??? what the hell were they thinking.
