The marking scheme of CMON is curious.
on what standards do we rate the miniatures provided on this site?
If someone posts a fully painted mini, then we mark it as if we were a golden demon judge - we base our mark on the painting, the conversion (if any), the base, and the photography (I might have missed something here, but i\'m not sure). so how do we mark a green of something? like what mark am i supposed to give something that isn\'t finished (like a lot of my stuff  ).
it\'s all a bit odd, really.
like we get advised to mark a 5 as \'tabletop quality\'. I don\'t know many people who would put an original green of a miniature on the table and game with it. the same fact goes for WIP stuff. I won\'t game unless my characters are all painted and based and ready (ergo i don\'t play many games :) ). Back-rank characters, however, are generally fair game.
I\'m not looking for an answer for this, i just want to know what other people think about this.

Oooh! Now this is a big can o\'worms....

But you make a good point. I never really know what to do about greens or wips. I tend to mark pretty low if someone posts a shot of something\'s half-finished legs as a wip, tho.

The short answer is there probably is no single answer. It\'s all subjective anyway, and to make fine distinctions would fracture the site too much. Sure it\'d probably be great if there was a wip section, a greens section, a terrain section, a 30mm only section.... but then it gets silly. How far do you take something like that? There is already a facility for doing this anyway, and the respective boards on the forum are available for more detailed discussion. I usually ask myself \"Is it a good example of what it is?\" and then score something accordingly. I really think wips should be posted in the forum, tho. That\'s what it\'s there for!

A finished green I judge on what it is - a sculpture. How well did the person SCULPT. The fact that it\'s unpainted is irrelevant.

I skip greens because I just don\'t feel comfortable scoring any of them. Mostly because any sculpt is so far away from what I could do, I could only give it a 10 based on that.

The painting, I tend to score on how it matches my ability. If I could paint it, eh, 5 maybe 6. If I can paint it the same in after another 30 or 40 minis, higher.

WIPs are just not finished, so I don\'t bother. I\'d have to score them low otherwise, and that\'s not fair to it. A lot of the time, I figure they\'re posted to get comments and suggestions and I\'d rather do that in the forums.

I\'ve been wondering the same thing myself. I was wondering about some of the scores my figures were getting, so I did a search so I could compare like with like.

When you sort by score it certainly doesn\'t look like the models have been sorted by the quality of the paint job.

Or maybe I\'m naive enough to think I should get 10\'s from everybody. lol

Seriously though, when you have a proper comparison the scores often don\'t make sense. I don\'t think I\'ll vote on wip stuff anymore either. Do you score what\'s been done so far, or do you give a low score for what\'s not been done? ??? I\'m just going to leave it.

I\'ll vote on greens, like Shawn says, as a sculpt. I won\'t vote on WIPs, either during the sculpt or painting stages. Those should be left to the WIP forum threads.

I tend to vote on what I see - greens and unpainted conversions get judged on how good they look just the same as painted minis. Although I am less likely to give top scores to anything unpainted I am also unlikely to give a 10 to a painted mini unless some extra work has gone into it (conversion, sculpting or scenery). For WiPs I won\'t vote high as they are unfinished but I\'ll try to add a comment to explain what I am voting on. Although I prefer to see these in the WiP forum I have been guilty of posting unbased minis myself to try to get more feedback before.

Incidentally, the \"imagine you\'rew a golden demon judge\" is a very lose guide to follow, otherwise we wouldn\'t be allowed to vote on anything other than GW minis ;)

Unfinished stuff... Hmm...
If it\'s a green, then I\'ll go with Shawn\'s sculpture rating.

If it\'s intended to GET painted, then Id\'ve put it in the WIP section of the boards.

Exactly. A completed green is still a mini afterall. Unless we changed to coolpaintedminiaturesonlyornot.com whilst my back was turned.

You know what? You\'ve both convinced me. Think I\'ll start voting on greens when they come up based on the sculpt.

That said, has anybody an example of a green that scored higher when unpainted? Just my curiosity to see the difference between the two entries.

Totally. Like far too many of the - how shall I put this? - plumped up scores on Continental pieces I\'ve looked at recently. Many of which also have eyebrow-raising vote counts in only a short time.

@Matty - ahhh, but did you sculpt Laura...?

You\'d have to submit her as her parents\' work :p
