Repaint and thin no more!

On this Ash Wednesday I wanted to remind everyone that we are all thinners. I myself had not realized my addiction to this problem until I noticed that my thinning had gotten to such an extreeme that I was starting to see BARE METAL on the edges of the mini I was currently working on. My thinning had eaten away the primer coat. :(

Meanwhile I had my problematic nude Mary that I have been trying to fix. There was exposed metal at the bottom of the base. No big deal, I thought, a little black paint around the base edge should do just fine. A little dab of paint on the palette from Michael\'s and this should be fixed in no time. Unfortauntely a little dab also appeared on the side of my non painting index finger. Suddenly Nude Mary\'s legs looked like she had been playing in the coal pile lightly dusted with BLACK PAINT! Another round of thinning ... Sigh. And this morning I discovered I missed a spot and there was still a bare spot on the base. :(

(And if that doesn\'t end my saga of woe, I left my primer white outside in the freezing weather. Time to buy a new can I think.)

How much do you thin your paint? I have had that problem from time to time and I rarely thin my basecoat more than 1:1. However, since I\'ve started using Folk Art Tile and Glass medium I don\'t have this problem anymore. I do a mixture of 2 parts of the folk art, 1 part VGC white primer and 3 parts water. So far this has worked wonders for me since I\'ve had nothing but horrible luck with spray on primers.

Am I the only one that lets the paint stay in its original consistancy until I put in in a palette, and thins it there?

Well I don\'t thin the paint in the bottle, I also use the trusty ... plastic plate. I have my most sacred and exceptionally cheap brush, used for getting a dolop of water that has been blessed with the sacred dish washing soap drop, then a drop of flow enhancer. Then I add the paint, lovengly transferred by the simple wooden toothpick. Stir and volia.

I have a bottle of water premixed and then transfer it to the pallete with a syringe. I transfer paint with the back of the brush and use it to mix. I mustnt thin as much as you tho.

One drop of paint into the well, then count the premixed water drops to the right consistency. Add an extra drop. Then think that I should play safe and add an extra drop. Now, since I\'ve already got the water there, and I\'d rather the paint be too thin than too thick, I add another drop. Because I can always go over an area more than once, I add another drop... and so it goes. More than once, I\'ve added another drop of paint because it\'s too damn thin. Whoops, now I\'ve added paint, and effectively halved the thinning, so I\'d better just add a drop of water, just in case. Wait, is one drop enough? Add an extra drop of water. Bugger, the well is overflowing! Do I need to empty it and remix, lest it spill?

Ok, that\'s exagerrated somewhat, but not too much.

Ooos, sorry, my paint gets thinned on the palette, but I have a tendency to thin too much -- often I have to go back and readjust the thickness by adding more paint...

No - although I do occassionally add water to keep my paints liquid over here.

I\'m very curious as to how this has happened as the medium used in the spray primer usually alws the paint to melt (meld) onto the mini.
I wonder how you are holding your figures that you might be rubbing off the primer, with either your fingers or heavy brush strokes.

True - I had an issue with that and had gone to wearing latex gloves on my left hand to paint. Now I use the lump of blu-tac on a water bottle lid method - much better.

Let he who is without thin, cast the first stone.

If you do what is right, will you not be accepted? But if you do not do what is right, thin is crouching at your door; it desires to have you, but you must master it.

Now forgive my thin once more and pray to the LORD your God to take this deadly plague away from me.

But now, please forgive their thin—but if not, then blot me out of the book you have written.

I am without thin. In fact, if thin was crouching at more door I\'d let it in. I\'m trying to get rid of fat - not thin.

I think we need to see the offending Nude Mary and then we can be not only thinners, but judgers as well:D

Nude Mary take 2 should be on CMON by the weekend as soon as I am convinced that the coal dust incident has been covered over.

While the natural assumption would be my fingers, the bald spots aren\'t where my fingers would go. Rather they seem to be where the most extreeme highlighting would be, or at edges of areas where it might be a case of being shy with paint because I fear overspill to the sourrounding areas. In Nude Mary, suddenly she developed a bald spot on the top of her head and on her knees. I might have held her knees (but I doubt it) but the top of her head I did not touch. I think it was a highlight layer that was working overtime long after I applied it.

I might start working on drying techniques or reducing the flow extender ... although I started that because the paint didn\'t mix uniformly well enough in the water. It might also be I\'m using too much soap. One half a drop in my large plastic drinking cup may still be too much.

Or in some cases copied, edited and sold on Ebay for profit.
