Hi Demi :)

I have a good airbrush set up, but for the size of parts and the yellow already being on them, airbrushing would take forever what with masking into all the crevices etc :(

I think i am going to go black for the parts that are covers or larger areas and keep the NMM to the bare metal pistons and a few areas otherwise ill end up in a padded room :)

But that's where all the best painting happens. imagine a whole spongey room that can be used as your wet palette...

Looking good! The right shoulder and hand look especially nice. How's the padded room wet palette working out for you? :)

Hi folks,

Decided to move back to the single entry for a bit to get a change of scene.

Started blocking in the main other aspect colours, and began the NMM base for the gold parts.

Completed the Crux Terminatus bit on the left shoulder.

Coming along :)

Struggling a bit with the NMM gold. The effect looks good on some bits, but other areas i am getting confused with light placement so its looking weird.

Ill sort out a few pics tonight for some of folks thoughts, but its getting things like chest eagles to look gold and not beige! :S

just at the shading stage, i.e. adding the black look to it, then highest white points, then a glaze of yellow, then re apply white reflect points.

Its alright, but you'll see what i mean tonight. TBH this is all about pushing new skills so even if its not great, thats what i want to achieve out of this whole thing.

I think you need to go darker in the shadows. Place the highlights next the shadows, try and get the edge highlights as sharp as possible.
Follow the edge around through the midtone in to the shadows.
Get some yellow/warm brown glazes on there and edge highhight the wings on the breast plate with a yellow/ivory then pure white dots next to the dark. (see on mine attached)
Just concentrate on one part then move on, trying to paint the whole will blow your mind.

Cheers Lee, very helpfull.

I am getting there with it, just takes a lot of concentration and trying not to flood the space with thin paint by accident.

TBF i haven't done any of the figh white type highlights\edge highlighting yet so it will obviously look flat still, its more just the transitions on the small stuff looking a bit odd which is throwing me off.

I know its one of those things once you have done it right a few times its second nature, just getting it to click.

Get a bit depressed if it doesnt look good as long way to go and a lot of money for what in the end i can see wont be worth entering. gets a bit dishearteing

I know EXACTLY where your coming from mate. I entered GD 5 times before I even got a finalist, then got one in 2011, took to 2014 to get a demon. LOADS of disappointment :(
Just takes hundreds of hours of practice, ocd, no sleep, arguments with the wife, a good whiskey, grit, and loads of luck.
Keep on slapping the paint, and your get there.

Aye i know, and i know i am in the right ball park, just need to keep at it, though having the centurion squad entry isnt helping haha.

Gotta spread the attempts about a bit. Though with the time frame they gave us, may have to shelf something.

Fiance is out late this week so get a few hours to put headphones on and paint, try and finish a section.

Going with Ten Ball's tip.

I worked on a single are on its own, the top angel banner part.

Adding in some greater edge highlight definition, some light points and a yellow glaze, i have still to add final white highlights again.

Looks more like it.

Yes! Much better :good:
You could go even more and crisp up the edges - be careful dont want to cause a repaint!

Is your wrist hurting yet? If not your not painting enough!!

Thats next step, i glazed it then went to bed, so very light bone mix highlight then pure white dots again.

Wrist is doing that rotating thing to stop cramps ;)

Starting to get into a rhythm with it now, still heaps to do, looking at a light purple NMM sort of look for the shaft!
Need to start working on a base soon. Thinking something reddish to frame the shoulders
