If this only made it as a Finalist, the rest of the field must\'ve been pretty damn impressive :wow:

Love the base. The horse has just the right amount of sheen to it. Love the white down near the hooves (what the hell do that call that part? I used to know! ) The banner is really cool and the rider\'s hair is great!

Marvelous painting there Margo. Crisp and well contrasted. The base is really great too. Maybe the horse on the banner could have had more shadows.

Dauber, it\'s called the fetlock.

Margo. Another beautiful piece. I think the armor is perfect.
Points that might be improvable - the mane and tail would look better highlighted to a light brown rather than gray. I\'d say it would look better if not all 4 hooves had socks. The blanket could stand a bit deeper shading and would look better against the green if you moved it more toward the maroon/purple. I think the banner would look better if you also included a white bit of piping near the edges - it would help make the standard pop.
Finally, as a totally nit-picky medievalist nerd, I\'d suggest more study of the patterning of traditional Celtic knotwork - the execution is faultless though.

Funny, when you look at something to really critique it, you notice the tiny details that make it amazing. That green looks like it would be soft to the touch and the base like cold stone. There must have been some scary competition.

If I may continue in the spirit of total nit-pickiness, it\'s not a celtic mini so it doesn\'t have to be traditional. Now, I\'m not qualified to judge wether the pattern is traditionally Rohanesque... :D

Great work Margo! There\'s a few minor points to be made, but I think they\'ve been made already so I\'ll not repeat them. I\'ll just second the comments about the harsh competition if this one didn\'t place...

Thank you guys for your comments, it really means a lot!

As for the things pointed out by vincegamer, I think it\'s more about the matter of personal taste. The color of mane and tail, socks, shade of the blanket, etc. Say, the horse -- I painted it after I did some research on coloring of different horse breeds, and i just happened to like this one the best -- with socks and greyish mane and tail.

There is, however, one thing I do agree about -- perhaps, the banner would indeed look better if there was a trim. In the movie, the banner actually did have a red/gold trim. I tried to paint it, but for some reason thought it didn\'t look right, and got rid of it :)

Anyway, always valuable to learn differen opinions, so thank you!

As for the competition at GD, well, I must say, I got the feeling that the LoTR cat is moving closer to the standards of the two other single mini cats. This year the judges picked not only superb paintjobs, but miniatures that had a twist to them, you know, something unusual and interesting.

You one of my favourite artist margo. The realism that you can attain is stunning. I will also say the competition must have been sizzling. I think your knot work it exceptional and it looks faily authentic to me. I will agree with every one that the banner whilst very good probably needs more to it but the whole mini is one of the best LOTR minis I have seen yet. Great job.

Need a black lining! I always told it her. Need, need, need more deep shadows on edges of details. Other parts of work is great as always.

Russia has nice horses. If you ever come to Baltimore GD, maybe you can translate my book of Russian Horse breeds for me.
