OK, I\'ve been painting a whole lot lately, and i keep getting WIPS...theres a good reason and Ive been working for competitions and am entering many categories in the contest...hence different wips...

instead of blubbering I\'m going to get right to the point

i am scared to put a new picture up in my gallery. Shelly , my latest, scored exceptionally better than i thought and i am petrified to put a new one in that wont score as well...

...help...lol

Snap out of it!!!

Seriously now, my third mini posted here is my highest scoring yet. Still I think I\'ve made tremendous progress in my abilities since that, but the scores don\'t reflect that. Screw the scores, I say! Don\'t be scared to put your new work up. Regardless of the scores, you\'ll get appreciation where it\'s due and criticism/advice that\'ll help you progress.

*edit* It may have been my fourth mini... but that doesn\'t change my arguments... :)

don\'t fear the reaper...

It is not a failure to have a lower scoring mini. Heck, it really shouldn\'t even be a consideration.

As long as you are striving to do better on each one, that seems to be its own reward.

Shelly is going to be a hard act to follow, but keep in mind that YOU painted it. Further works, regardless of the score, will never take that away.

;)

Good advice there. Just go for it. Like in the theatre, where you have to follow up on a really good night. Just means you have to focus a little and let it be what it needs to be.

It\'s how you get better.

I was apprehensive at first as well, but constructive criticism is how you get better. The proof should be that master-level painters who have responded to this post still look for ways to get better. That\'s the great thing about his hobby, there\'s no ceiling on it.:bouncy:

ha! the curse of success

I understand Your hesitation...
the farther You get the more envy will You encounter, because this is (regrettably) normal human behavior.

But please consider this
- You have friends here who are eagerly anticipating your newest endeavors
- show and share what You do so others may learn too
- only the good get slandered, you can take the bad votes like as a medal of honour
- (very in brackets: little me feels especially encouraged to see the painting god\'s less godlike results, as in \"ahaa, this is the way how they got that good\")

so please keep them coming

For the longest time my best-scoring mini was NOT one of my latest, and that was annoying. I felt I had \"slipped\" after doing one really good job. Of course, it was not true - that mini (\"Riot Girl\") simply appealed to CMONers in ways the others had not, and was consequently more popular.

Also, you can always think of the \"boobies factor\" - Shelly has them, your next mini may not. You can always blame that if it scores lower ;)

Becca : Just post them up what\'s the worst that can happen?
You\'ll become rich and famous? You won\'t speak to us anymore?

Just go for it, it\'s always nice to see painted figures.

While the desire to get higher scores can be a good motivational tool, don\'t let it ruin your enjoyment of the hobby. Given your progress I don\'t think you have hit your plateau yet. :)

Becca, even if it does not score as well as your top 5 minis, it does not hurt your score. If it scores better than your 5th best mini, you get to go up in ranking and get ahead of me again.
:p

Shelly, and Riot Girl, are also really scenes rather than single miniatures. I think a good scene really resonates for a lot of people, gets more of an emotional response, so can as a result get a slightly higher score than if the person were judging only the painting of an individual mini and a small base. I know I will bump my vote up a point for that reason sometimes. If your next mini or three does score lower, I don\'t think that says anything bad about your painting skills, rather I think it says something good about your skills at creating a scene that really touches people. :)

Though by no means would I overlook the effect of the boobie factor. ;)

Becca.

Look through my gallery and consider that I will soon post another miniature. Compare my scores to your scores. Note that my best mini is an amorphous blob with a paintjob a four year ols could have done (ten minis back) and my second best mini is a Drune Persecutor (seven minis back). Also note that my scores suck, especially in comparison to yours.
My suckiness does not hold me back from posting more minis, why should your painting ability hold you back then?

Now shut your noise hole and post your mini :D
