Scott's GD WIP

For the past 3 years I have been competing in Golden Demon and while I have garnered many first cuts and even an honorable mention I have yet to win a demon. I am hoping that maintaining a thread here about my progress will motivate me towards finally doing what it takes to get a demon. So, first up is a test model for a unit. I love the dynamic pose of this mini and if it comes out well I may do a second one on a better base to enter.

I would love to hear any comments or critiques. Obviously it is very incomplete at this point but I will post my progress as I make it.

The biggest trick I've seen with GD (at least in the US) is that the competition is wildly different between categories. One year, say fantasy monster can be a wasteland, and the next year it's the toughest category.

2012 being the wasteland?

Looking good, Scott. The wood is looking great. And the gray is the smoothest I have seen from you!

That grey is tricky. Trystan I have noticed the same thing. Regiment is almost always weak though. If I can ever get a good unit done to my best standard then I think I stand a decent shot. That is where I saw my honorable mention.

That's because doing a whole squad (especially fantasy) to GD standards is only for the certifiably insane. 80-100 hours for a single mini, translated out - hmm a VC squad would weigh in at 2000 hours? Haha...

You only have to paint 5 minis to do a unit of WoC Chosen. And Mordheim warbands can be as low as 5.

True enough; it's still not for the faint of heart though. The wood looks great so far. I'm looking forward to seeing how it looks with more of the miniature painted. One bit of critique: in the top-down photograph the green stuff on his arm looks a little crunchy. In my experience it's small things like those rough spots that can get you bumped down from placing in the GDs to an honorable mention. If two minis are dead even in terms of overall paint job, they start looking at the miniscule things to see if something stands out.

good luck sir. I started to paint an Savage Ork Warband for GDUK2012 but didn't get too far because I lost enthusiam for the minis. I wish you better luck and more stamina than I showed lol.

Mini looks good too. Are you going for tattoos on them?

Cheers
Will

green stuff fixed, good catch. I would have seen it once I put paint on it but that would have meant more work later. As for tattoos I think I'm going to go for more of a war paint look, flaking and peeling and such. Get some little cracks in it.

i had also in mind to paint savage orcs for a possible (uk)gd entry, but yeah, although the boss is pretty cool, the box set is a rather weak one imho which made me change my mind.
anyway, green guys are always cool, looking forward to see it take shape!

I'm sure with your skills you could save the box set! ;)

the problem I found with the boxset was that although there are lots of options, a lot of the body musculature is similar so actually not much variation for a 'painter'. More of a gamers box IMO.

maybe i have to take another look, but i didnt think there were that much options. just the fact all the guys have one arm already fixated in one position made them very limited to begin with, at least for a mediocre sculptor as myself. when it comes to body musculature, well, i can live with similarity.
btw thanks william :)

Looks like its coming along nicely. Just wondering about the axe though, Looks quite rusty which is a nice effect in itself but the texture of it seems to suggest stone rather than metal. Maybe a thin glaze of grey over the whole thing will bring it back to more of a discolored stone effect? Just a suggestion :)

I like where you are taking the ax. I think it needs to be brighter in areas, and the brown needs to be darker in areas to really sell the effect.

Anyway, great job, skin is looking good, but needs to be more gradual with transitions. May be the photo but the shading seems really drastic. If it were me, I would add more highlights to the face and add detail/character to the face. You know how I mean. What are your plans for warpaint?

I hadn't decided yet on the warpaint, I have been gathering references. I had been thinking a skull on the face but its been done. So now I'm thinking something on the arms and maybe a band across the eyes. Likely in white to go with the ax which looking at it I think you are right about it. I really need to work on something to sell the effect better. As far as the skin goes it is a little bit of column a and a little bit of column b. The pics suck but its definitely not finalized either. I am doing some pretty dramatic shadows but the transitions are going to be smoother once I get to glazing it.
