yup I must admit I had always struggled with that until I saw aone of your unpainted WIP\'s and it makes so much sense... I use it for making rope too...

Rope just take 2 or 3 pieces of wire and twist together

Plaits take thre small bundles of wire... secure them in a vice or other clamp.. Plait by alternating right then left into the middle...

Makes a lot of sence - cheers guys.

BTW you seem to use plaided and braided as two word for the same is that correct? or if not what\'s the difference?

if its a free hanging braid, i would go with the wire but i would have thought putty would be easier for hair that is resting on the head
all you would need to do was roll a sausage of putty and then carve in some lines

thats all i do wen sculpting plats.roll out a sausage then put some diagonal lines in it making sure there stagard (so that were the lines touch is slightly above the bottom of the next 1)then i will smooth the putty so that each diagnal box is slightly lower at the bottom(this stops the final result from looking like a sausage with lines on it)then put the hair lines in trying to curve ur lines round towards the outer edge this makes it more natural.if ur still having trouble pm and il try n give some step by step pics

Personally I think braids should generally be sculpted, the main reason being that you can accurately replicate the tapered shape that braids have in reality (probably less important in fantasy figs but v. important in historical modelling IMO).

It\'s a pain to do but you can actually braid nearly-hard GS if you time it just right and have the right touch but if you want to go with braiding then wire is much easier, only it can\'t replicate the taper.

Sorry but: Yes it can, loose braiding at the top, tight at the bottom.

P\'r\'aps, but for longer ones I don\'t think it\'s enough to look right (I\'m thinking Jet Li in Once Upon A Time in China for example and my GF\'s hair tapers from around 2\" / 5cm at the nape of the neck to maybe 2/3\" / 1.7cm at the bottom of the back. With fine hair it can go down to way thin at the end of a long plait.
