Personally I think braids should generally be sculpted, the main reason being that you can accurately replicate the tapered shape that braids have in reality (probably less important in fantasy figs but v. important in historical modelling IMO).
It\'s a pain to do but you can actually braid nearly-hard GS if you time it just right and have the right touch but if you want to go with braiding then wire is much easier, only it can\'t replicate the taper.

P\'r\'aps, but for longer ones I don\'t think it\'s enough to look right (I\'m thinking Jet Li in Once Upon A Time in China for example and my GF\'s hair tapers from around 2\" / 5cm at the nape of the neck to maybe 2/3\" / 1.7cm at the bottom of the back.
