Sculpting my own Green Scar

Im new to sculpting and I wanted to try this conversion before launching into my first full figure sculpt in order to improve my skills. I\'ve chosen to sculpt a Hulk Gladiator model based on the Marvel Heroscape Hulk. I loved the Planet Hulk Series and I decided a Hulk Gladiator would be quite cool. There is one already done by Heroclix - but I wanted to do this one anyway - for sculpting practice.

This first photo is the mock up. I had to shave away his pants so there\'s alot of work to do on his lower legs. The plan is a gladiator helmet, belt and gladiator kilt thingy, shoulder harness and shoulder guard, and of course the axe. I may or may not put the gladiator sandals on him like in the comic - haven\'t decided yet.

Here\'s the beginning of the gladiator helmet. I\'m keeping it simple.

Helmet is mostly done now - all I have left to do for it is the plume. Ive carved down a small piece of plasticard for now. Later I\'ll cover it with green stuff and carve the plumes. The axe blade is carved plasticard as well. I have also started sculpting on the axe with Procreate.

The axe handle is made from several electronic pin connectors. Here\'s a close up...

and a shot of the very quickly and messily sketched shield design - also from the comic. You can also see some green stuff on his lower leg - the molded plastic on Heroscape models is very pliable and doesn\'t take to carving very well so I am going to have to do an extensive amount of covering up the areas where I shaved off his trousers. I also may turn the shield long ways for a better fit and more dramatic look. In future updates I\'ll try that out and get reactions.

Anyway - hope this comes out well. Please feel free to offer constructive comments and suggestions. I\'m very new to sculpting so I need all the help I can get.

Thanks!!

Well, it was an interesting experiment in getting the harness on there. Im pretty happy with it but if I were to do it again I would make the rings smaller.

Next I\'ll be adding the kilt and the shoulder guard.

Thanks for looking!!

This is a great project to get you started, I think most people who have aspirations to sculpt should start with conversions and work from there.

A couple of pointers on the harness. I\'d probably make the rings from wire myself, although putty is certainly doable. If you use putty make a raft of them so you can pick the best ones to use and let them set before you apply them to the model.

For the rivets on the straps, it\'ll look more convincing if you do an impression on the strap first, let the GS cure and then apply the rivet - either impressing wet putty in place or make them separately (on a sheet of plastic, so you can pop them off easily) and glue them down.

Thanks for the tips Einion!

Yeah - I admit I skimped on the rivets on the harness but probably the thing I forget most often is that I don\'t have to do everything at once. Hence the crappy rivets. I may go back to them and putty over them to make them look a little better later.

Welcome! One of the things that\'s most important to bear in mind when working with epoxy putties is that we can (in fact often should) wait for a stage to cure before working on top of it or next to it. This helps prevent disturbing existing work, and we might as well take advantage of the fact that it hardens after all :)

Although there\'s a danger of getting a little too precious with multiple additions of putty I don\'t think there\'s any reason to put yourself off mixing a small blob (about the size of a lentil) just for tiny added details like eyebrows, filling out a cheek, adding a slight bump to a nose, enlarging knuckles etc. Once you get good at doing these kinds of additions it\'s surprising how much finesse they can add to a sculpt, which is reason enough in my book!

If they\'re short and squat I think you can sculpt them in situ but for longer ones you\'d be better off sculpting them (or making them - carving/sanding) separately before gluing into position.

I\'m very interested to see how this turns out. I really enjoyed planet/world war hulk.

Have you seen the knight minis hulk? Part of their marvel line, but much more in the \"hulk smash\" line, rather than the \"so angry he\'s calm\" green scar.

Added some spikes to the pommel.

Not sure about that little face yet - I\'ll probably redo it.

Thanks for looking - any crits and comments are welcomed.
