i personally would never buy a mini series 7. i found the bristle length way too small so the paint kept creeping into the ferrule. even with regular washing, it got totally ruined pretty quick.

i would go for a 0 with a fine point and something bigger. as long as you have a good point, you dont need a really small brush (i can dot the pupils with the point from my 1)

I\'ve been using:

Cheaper and equal (or better) than W&N series 7. Last longer too!

Support the small guy!!!

The series 7 have 2 different bristle lengths, long and short. I have a couple of the long ones and they are fine, maybe even too long.

As for the original Q, I found a size 2 to be a bit big, but still useable and I wouldn\'t go below a 0, they start getting too small.

Really I wasn\'t very impressed by them, Franchvilles have finer points on them and are at least half the price. The one series 7 I have used has worn out pretty fast as well.

Best advice is to go to an art shop, find the decent sable brushes and sit down with some water and a peice of paper and test them until you get ones you are happy with.

I use the windsor and newton special value (economy) sable brushes. I bash them around the hugly. Cost me £3.50 for the set and they have lasted over 6 months with no ill effects. Got them from whsmiths.

I recommend these, then one good quality sable brush for freehand detail.

I use WN -long bristles- 3/0, 0, 1 sizes. Though I will exho that I prefer another brand... Raphael 8404 in the same sizes.

Seems everyone has a different prefference! My WN7 are nice, but I find the raphael get used way more (Firmer bristles which I like).

From my personal experiences the 7s are the best brushes out there, because unless you treat them particularly badly they will stay in very good shape and the drag between the model and the brush is so smooth. i love them and after trying other brands i have always come back to them. i have size 2,1, 0, and 000. they work great and always keep that point. never turns into a fringing bendy brush.
i would recommend getting those, just made sure to open up the case before you buy it at a store and see there is no problems. I find a lot of the time there are defects that why i would never order online.

i\'m hunting for mickey mouse wand, then the brushes will do all the work on their own.

until then i use raphael, W+N7\'s and rosemaries brushes.

I\'ve a selection of the regular (i.e. long) bristled W+N 7\'s - biggest is a size 2 and smallest is a 00 (never used that though). I also have a size 2 of their miniature range (i.e. short bristles), which I\'ve found a lot easier to control, though the paint does indeed creep up into the ferrule no matter how careful you are.

In my opinion the size 2 miniature one could be used to do pretty much the majority of a model - I was painting the eyes of a marine last week with no problems at all. The regular size 2 I\'ve found to be ideal for basecoats and even the first highlight on a model, but after that I have personally found it a bit too uncontrollable for my liking.

But as you\'ve read everybody has different abilities and finds a different brush suits them (bit like one type of shoe doesn\'t fit or suit everybody). On your question of size, looks like size 0 and 1 have been mentioned the most, so would be a good starting point.

edit - guessing from your username you\'re a UK person - I\'ve personally bought my regular series 7 from Hobbycraft :)

I\'ve had my wn7s for a few months, but had a dud size 1 and had to get a new one - which is soooo much better.
I\'m enjoying using them, they have long bristles and they handle the paint well.
I have 2,1,0,00 and recently bought a 000 for the hell of it.
I\'ve bought from here as they are cheap and the postage is fast and super well packaged.

So far I have only used the 1 and the 0.

Granddad!
pretty much as above for sizes, I have bothe the regular and mini 7s
I\'ve never had any problems cleaning either and all my brushes a over 3yrs old and still work well, with the exception of my size1, but I\'d say that gets used the most

I\'ve also got a set of Kappel brushes which are about 1 1/2yrs old, but I\'m gonna need to replace a couple of them shortly

My no. 1 tip would be to look around the site for alternatives and try them as well, or instead.

The Series 7 that I have are fair. I may have gotten a group of semi-duds though since they tend to split when loaded a fair amount (and not overloaded). I still use them.

In terms of size and length, I have the standard rounds in #2, #1, #0, and #000. The #1 and #0 see the most use these days.

I like the Da Vinci Maestro #10 brushes better.

I\'ve actually found that W&N has 3 lengths. Mini, standard and long. The minis are great for dotting eyes, but that is about it. Very short bristles that do not hold a lot of paint. The longs are too long. Think almost liners. Standards, I like the #1 & #0 for 90% of my work.

Richard, from your handle, I\'m guessing you are in the UK? Try the Rosemarys - I have not found them here in the US, but I\'ve heard nothing but good about them.

I also use mostly the series 7\'s, although recently I invested in some Raphael\'s but have yet to try them.

I would recommend getting a size 0, 00, and 000 for any small detail work. The 0 is a great brush for applying general base coats or covering larger areas. The 00 I use as my main brush for most painting and the 000 I use on small details or if i want to get really straight smooth highlights/lines.

If you take care of them they will last quite awhile. My )) usually lasts me at least a month and a half.

Overall they are great brushes. They hold and spread paint very well.
