Yeah also if he is that nasty he will need some dirt in his finger nails and his hair might be a lot more matted than it is now. Haha. When dr chimed in on the pants I admit I think it takes it to far. However, I have learned that is what makes him such a great painter and in truth what blows my mind with all the astounding painters on this site. The real kick in the pants (wakka wakka) is when everyone suggested the certain flaws in the aged pants you said "oh you mean like this" and give it those extra details with such perfection. So my thoughts are DR keep not picking and you better listen :p

I wish I could give technical advises to anyone but I really lack the Tech talk, I am more of a feeling painter I guess and it's hard for me to recall what i did and try to explain to other.

It's all good ter the more you learn the terms the more you understand how to implement them.dogs thanks so much you are all one hell,of a support team..and especially the experience of former judge papa Dragonsreach..the man is never wrong he has a genuine way about wanting g to bring the best painter out in everybody..it's through his eyes I've done some of my best work..and he is why I'm always learning.

Great weathering on the pants, love that mud effect. The base is also looking stellar. Glad I didn't go with a Cthulhu for my chibi, don't want too many of those running around.

I think my last sentence got messed up. It was suppose to read like this...
DR keep on nit picking those little details because that is what brings out the awesome, and BAM you better listen when he does because when it that happens EVERYONE wins.

OK guys I'm feeling the love here.

But in all seriousness all I'm trying to do is share in a bit of the knowledge I've picked up over the many years I've screwed up, and believe me I've screwed up a lot!.

So here's a few thoughts about things to consider for mini for competitions that I wish I'd thought about.

Bases are the support and or story grounding for a mini, slapping sand and Drybrushing may be "OK" for gaming but in competitions we need to be more effective, your base shouldn't "drown" out the mini, simple yet strong. For a Bright mini try to darken the edges slightly so that the figure looks kinda spotlighted, doesn't need to be stage bright just a touch will do.
Try to keep bases as much in keeping colour wise with the materials they are meaning to be, metals = metals, Earth stick to natural colours as much as possible. For example with BaM's I'd be recommending using a combination of VMC Flat Earth with tonal washes an glazes of chocolate brown, Burnt Umber and German Camo Black Brown.
AND most importantly ensuring that there were just tiny touches of colour like the cloak green and shirt's red in there as well (not huge or prominent) just enough for the human eye to pick up subconsciously, that does add a surprising harmony to some figures.

Over the years one thing I've learned is that observation is the key to understanding, look around at the world and the people in it. Buildings have character, some of the older buildings round were I work and live have colours in them due to age neglect and humans. An old redbrick building I pass by daily was built in Victorian times and the bricks due to weathering and the fact it was directly beside a Railway line are a "Deep Red-Black" and the mortar around them has gone black. Yet another built 1901 that I used to work in has bricks which vary between Brick red to purple-black and huge amounts of salt staining from water leaching out of the mortar. The sandstone has algae growth patterns and Budlea plants growing in the cracks.
Here in Bolton, some of the older buildings have damp and algae staining at the bases making them darker below knee level, and the cobblestones that get dug up sometimes vary between Blue grey to slate to green grey.

Last thing for today, think about people in context of what and when. Like I said about BaM's figure think about the character in relation to the period, the action, the background and context. In a drawn out campaign everyone's gonna end up scruffy, battered and bruised.......unless you're a 'Silk Swaddled Messenger Boy'.

Here endeth today's lesson

hey not easy to give some c&c as i really do not like the sculpt, looks lika a kind of sad copy of stellan skarsgård
karthur2x.jpg

...ok i guess the sculpt must be based on him...

one thing i really miss is some "life" into his eyes, some small white dots like this etc
images

it also look a bit like the pupil/s are slightly off and continue some microscopic milimeter down under his eye.

base looks a bit rushed, why not some small vegetation, or snow would be perfect as he is a northman.

best parts are the boots and especially the paints :good:

Ah ha he's Def not finished the left eye I saw just a second ago the base I need to hit up my hobby store for some vegetation.and the small white dots will Def be addressed this is great all this help.I can't thank you guys enough I've put him down to take a small break I'm probably going to work on him on friday.don't think I'm going to go with the snow as its too generic and not my strong suit more of a forest theme as if he's in a far off land doing the rape and pillage theme...but without the rape and pillage of course.thank you all so much for pitching in.you too skell thanks a bunch.

Tried the dots it's very tough note this the model your all seeing is 5 times the size of the actual model most of what mistakes are cannot be detected I've fixed the right eye as it was coming down into the eyebase of flesh that being said I should explain1)the sculpt is not with eyeballs it's meant to be done as a squint aand most versions are done just with shading the eyes are so small a dot can not ma,e it in there they have no room.so rather than mess it up I'm stopping there the base will be taken much much in a more detailed status...the way you compete guys is trying to see if you could have beaten the winners of the year before...I've clearly beaten 1st 2nd and 3rd in the historical...next up the undead bust in my eyes potentially beat 2nd and 3rd of the large models of last years.and w/O a doubt the 3rd best at least you don't have to be perfect any model magnified to 5xS the size all with show slight imperfections only Sebastian archer Natalya menlink and thone like Jeremy toboul would paint where the enhanced images would show no imperfections..the truth is I feel the eyes though non existent are two small for my skill to get in there believe me I've tried..next up I'm addressing the base this is that last 10% that will take 100 percent of my time.thanks to everybody for all their input w/O you guys I wouldn't catch these Lil quirks going unnoticed.thank god for the forums.
