Looks great, BAM! I really like the blood on the head and splatters on the cloths. Good attention to detail, with streaks on the head and splotches/smears on the clothing. When you get a chance, I would add some red glazes to the main guys face, in the cheeks and tip of the nose. It adds a little more life to the figure and would be a nice contrast with the paler decapitated head.

Thanks for your comments from the other day, by the way!

Red glazes you say I'm on it should I use and ink/wash or a glaze of paint??
By the way the comments from the other day is no favor it's just a truth that I'm convinced about beyond the debate.

Well, I use glazes of paint. For skin I use the GW glazes (more because I happen to have them rather than because they're anything special). The only real benefit to the pre-made glazes is you don't have to worry about the consistency. Still, when I use the GW glazes I further thin them roughly 50/50 GW glaze and water. Ink is another options, as long as it doesn't give you too satin a finish. But I'd thin that too. Just don't do a wash, since you don't want it to go all over. I start the brush stroke a little below the eye (maybe 2/3 the way up the cheek) and the push away from the top and into the shadows. With the nose, start at the top and push down and under. Build up the color over several layers. I use maybe 3-5, it just depends on how thin or thick your glaze is. Afterwards you may need to go in and redo the skin highlights, check to see if it's needed. If you're making your own glazes from regular paint, make sure to use something like Vallejo Glaze Medium (or one from another brand). This will help the paint react well when it's mixed with a large amount of water.

Here's an example I did a while ago. This is a 90mm figure, so about twice the size of your project... but it's a lot easier to see what I'm going for. The middle image is before the glazes and the far right image is after. Notice the color change on the cheeks and nose.

I attached two images from another project, this time a 54mm face. The first image set is before the glazes and the second image set is after the glazes. There's a bit more going on here, red on the cheeks, nose and bottom of the ear. Purple in the lower part of the cheeks and under the eyes to strengthen the shadows. Then blue on the lower part of the face to create the look of stubble. None of the colors are that extreme, just tinting the existing work. You don't want the cheeks and nose to be bright red, just a subtle color shift. Your guy's ears are covered up and so is the lower part of his face, so no need to worry about them.

Keep in mind that there's nothing wrong with the faces before glazing. You're welcome to skip that step if you want. But I think it adds a little more life to the face and is a nice final touch. You can do the same thing on his body, by the way. You could add a little red tint to his knuckles and elbows.

Ha, well I guess miracles can happen. Though the top three from previous years tend to blow my mind, so I'd have to get really lucky to end up there. Of course I never expected my hobbit piece to end up in CMON's top ten for the year, so what do I know.

The number of coats depends on how thick or thin your glaze is. When I use the GW glaze combined 50/50 with water, 3 layers will give you a pretty subtle color shift. See how it looks and then add another 2 or 3 layers if you want a more dramatic color shift. You could use a thicker glaze and less layers, but then you often see where the brush stroke starts instead of a smooth blend. If you're not sure about the consistency, test it out on his knuckles. It's a lot easier to fit a small mistake there (or just cover it up with blood splatter). Also keep in mind glazes dry a bit slower than regular paint, so don't apply your next layer too quickly. That will just push the underlying layer around instead of adding to the color.

Looking great BAM, I suggest a touch lighter on the highlights not too much just a little or take the darks down a touch its not quite the same as sorrow man(left). The leather stands out to me - making the leather a bit more worn OR put a few simple norsk patterns on it in a slightly darker tone so they only jsut catch your eye, that way they dont have to be spot on but the leather looks a bit more detailed.

Bump the bailey glaze! looking top Q matey :)

Looking good! The barbarians are great for your weathering work. It's going to be a really nice set of figure.

And everyone, please leave the raping and pillaging to the professionals. Do not try that at home.

2 almost down and 1to go for my historical unit of barbarians!!! Minor changes including baily red face warming trick and dirtied up the belt as per my boy cancan!!! Starting to look like a rather fearsome unit of animals!! This was all vaults idea when I asked how do I enter the Saxon if I'm entering my gladiator for the historical he calmly instructed me to do 2 barbarians and enter the unit in a historical unit category!!!! At that point it was a race as it took 3weeks to get the models lucky I'm a fast painter with 8hr days and sufficient time to bang em out!!

Nice! Looking forward to seeing the 3rd figure.

By the way, don't forget the rules for the unit category says "Unit must be presented on a movement tray or single display base to facilitate handling and photography." Each of your figures is on a nice stand alone display base, so I don't think a joint one is necessary. But make sure you have some sort of tray so they can all be grouped/moved together.

God call Bailey, if you're handy with tools and wood grab a hole saw the diameter of the plinths and cut a thin (4-5MM) thick mdf and glue it to a tray so your minis can't move. Should make it look fancy.
