Single Favorite piece of art?

Dali and Giger kind of go hand in hand with the gaming/painting lot... much like witch craft (see other thread!). Both artists are quite tedious, especially Dali who\'s become the pin up of every squat and middle class wannabe living room.

lol

If you really want to hate art, go do a degree in it! Guaranteed to put you off for life!

Reminds me of the episode of Buffy where these vampires are killing university students and stealing all the stuff from their residence rooms. They have a competition to see how many Klimt and Escher posters they can acquire :D I personally can\'t stand Dali, Surrealism as a style just doesn\'t do it for me.

@reverend... don\'t go trying to define art, or exclude things because they \"don\'t have meaning\". It\'s futile, nobody will agree with you or each other.

No actually I didn\'t

Could you link some pictures here if you find any?

Favourite fantasy/contemporary artist has to be Luis Royo. But the first piece that came to mind when I read the topic of this post was The Haywain by John Constable.

My favourite picture is by Maxfield Parrish - the Lanternbearers - painted about 1906 I think

I also remember being blown away by Jim Sterenko\'s Nick Fury commics in my teens

And Bernie Wrightson\'s Swamp thing

My current favourite artist is a Brit - Jack Vettriano who my daughter - an art student - hates, an example of his slightly sinister paintings is this - \"A very dangerous beach\"

He is more familiar for pictures of dancers in the sands now available on thousands of posters - todays Blue Lady:D

here\'s mine, St Anne with Mary and St John by that Da Vinci fellow

its the look of unintentional menace in the eyes of the central figure (St anne i think) that does it for me

i think that brute did the cover for steelworks by bigod 20 too, although i could be wrong.....this is a fourteen year old memory

Would I be right in suggesting that a lot of the pieces shown are just fantasy illustrations rather than artworks? Just a thought...subjectivity springs to mind, but I\'m sure artistry in its truest sense tends to challenge things like our perception or socio-political issues, etc

That\'s funny, I was just thinking there was an awful lot of great fantasy artwork and several unintelligible blobs of color and/or scribbles.

Lots of great stuff so far. For me, coming down to a single favorite is really hard.

I did get a chance to see an Alphonse Mucha exhibit here in Seattle a few years back (at the Frye museum, for those interested), and it definitely had a serious impact on me.

Of those, possibly \"The Stars\" were some of the most moving.

Of course, the impact is greatly diminished on these small photos.

I\'m also particularly fond of Olivia DeBerardinis\' stuff.

Oh I do love Cheesecake! :D I am also fond of Vargas.;)
I like Micheal Whelan.
I guess I don\'t have one favorite peice of art.
But I can say that I can not stand Cubisim!
and I detest Picasso!
I like Monet though.

I know it when I see it

I don\'t have one favorite artist - there\'s too much art out there to pick a favorite. I love landscapes - probably because I love nature themes and try to imagine I\'m there. Albert Bierstadt is an artist I like, but I also like the Art Deco/20\'s/30\'s style. I\'d never seen any of the Alphonse Mucha stuff until Valander posted it and I love it!

I also like Whelan (used to have an original!), but these days I really Luis Royo\'s stuff - the darkness and eroticism really capture my attention more so than the pure fantasy.

For the most part, I don\'t care for cubism, modern, etc., but I like to keep an open mind and there have been some pieces that I\'ve connected with and enjoyed. If it strikes my fancy I like it.

Me too. He\'s one of the founders of that style. I\'m at work now but I\'ll try to post photos of the glass in lead window he did for Prague Cathedral.

Well, Art Nouveau WAS the immediate precursor to Art Deco, and they have a lot in common (or more accurately, they both don\'t have a lot in common with previous styles) and were precursors to other genres of modern art. Art Nouveau is of course more naturalistic while Art Deco is more \"mechanistic\". I really like Mucha but I didn\'t know his name until just now... so cool!

I am enjoying this thread - seeing what others like and getting to think about my own likes/dislikes such as Mucha whose four seasons set graced my living room wall twentyfive years ago!

Finding some new treasures as well such as Michael Whelan who I didn\'t know - reminded me of Roger Dean who used to do album (LP) covers and logos for groups such as Yes.

Here is a pic of that Cathedral windows by Mucha I mentioned:

And a few details:

Not that they do the real thing justice though. :(

And a few pieces of art deco:

which show the difference in style. Or as Cindy explained to me \"think Gotham city\".

Dang, I\'ve got to log on during the weekend more often!!

As a person with a pretentious art degree, I think there is no more beautiful piece of sculpture on the face of the planet that Michelangelo\'s Pieta in St. Peter\'s basilica. I\'d give my right arm to run my hands over it just once (yes, I have seen the real thing).

As for other artists, I like the fantasy art of Amy Brown http://www.amybrownart.com/
She does mainly fairies, but I still enjoy them. I also like fantasist Michael Parkes, whose posters were quite popular a few years ago (and who was an obvious influence for Ms. Brown).

I\'ve also discovered a local artist here in the Northwest who\'s quite talented and appeals to both the fantasy aspect and to a desire for good art:
http://www.epilogue.net/cgi/database/art/list.pl?gallery=210
Matt Harpold does really nice paintings and sells them at appallingly low prices. We have half a dozen of his original works in our home now.

Well as a person with a humble Museum Studies degree I say shame on you if you do. Don\'t you know that the oils in your skin cause damage to marble? So hands off.:D

@ Duende and Drake - Funny story is when I was working over at WotC and taking smoke breaks, I met this guy who would come out of the art department. Chatted with him a bunch, then one day I ran into him while he was spraying a some overcoat or something on a canvas and finally took a look at his badge. Keep in mind, WotC badges had large first names and very small last names, so I knew his name was Todd, but didn\'t learn his last name until months after I met him.

I really had no idea the caliber of people I was running into while in the hallways. It\'s kinda sad when you think about it.

And back on topic...:bouncy:

I still have a soft spot for Elmore, since the old Dragonlance Chronicles were around the time I started getting into reading fantasy. Other artists I adore are Yoshitaka Amano and Masamune Shirow.

I\'ll have to get back to this thread as far as a single piece of art. I\'m sure there\'s one hiding somewhere on my bookshelf. :D
