Update!
Well not too much of an update, ive spent the last few days cleaning the devestator parts for assembly. I was hopeing to get your opinions on the pose of the commander of the devestator squad.

Im not to sure whether the chain sword fits the movement of the mini?

On to other things, i placed an order for some cork yesterday, which im going to be using for the bases so hopefully that arrives soon, and waiting for this paint to arrive is driving me crazy.........

Comments welcome

Well the item in his right hand is an auspex, which is a scanning device for identifying hidden and infiltrating enemy units.

I\'d say his sword would be perfectly placed as it is, if you flipped the auspex over and used a more bent arm to hold it, so it looked as though the Sergent had just consulted the auspex, got a fix on an enemy position, looked up and pointed them out with his sword to the rest of his squad.

Game wise a Devastator Sergent is probably better off equipped with a bolter than a chainsword and bolt pistol, but it isn\'t a massive problem to be honest.

What weapons are you planning on putting in the devastator squad?

Thanks for the reply Lono, it really helps.
Ill look through the sprues for a better arm for the auspex, i like your idea for him.

With the devestator squad ill probably be giving them a mix of multi melta\'s, lascannons, heavy bolters and plasma cannons etc. mainly whats on the sprues. any thoughts on this?

thanks again,

Lascannons and multi-meltas can rip through the highest armour on infantry and take out tanks quite easily too. The plasma cannon does this pretty well also, but has a little less punch. The heavy bolter is a bit different. It has a more rapid fire rate and is better for taking out medium and light armoured infantry.

If you are considering using them for gaming at any point, I\'d say don\'t put the Heavy Bolter in the Devestator squad. This is because all members of a squad must shoot at the same target, so mixing weapon specialisations isn\'t a great idea.

Two lascannons is always handy if you\'ll play against lots of tanks as this is where they are most effective. The the same is true for multi-meltas, which get even more effective at close range.

Plasma cannon shots have a blast radius, so if you are going to face lots of high armoured infantry they can be very useful, as they will harm more than one model each time they fire.

Missile launchers team up well with plasma cannons, because they can take out high armour targets with krak missiles, or multiple lower armour targets with frag missiles.

Heavy bolters are probably best fielded with four to a squad, which I know you don\'t get in the box. This is a nasty anti-infantry unit. You could still use a heavy bolter in a normal Marine troops squad to make it extra shooty if you wanted.

Thanks for the help lono,
Ill go with the lascannons, plasma cannons and missile launchers for the squad.
As far as the sergeant is concerned, if i hung, for example, a bolter from his side, would he be able to use that in gaming terms? or would i have to get rid of the chainsword all together?

thanks again,

Sorry for the lack of updates, had something i needed to finish before i could continue with these guys. ive finished assembling 50% of the devestator squad and should have some pics tomorrow/saturday.
The only major problem is i found out that the VMC paint paint i ordered was only just posted today ( a week and a day after the guy received the payment!) so i wont be getting it untill around the 19th :(...oh well...more assembling i guess :)

Well after assembling a couple more devestators i decided i needed a break from them so ive begun work on a conversion idea i had a few days ago.
I received this Black Templar Emperors Champion a week or so ago as a gift and ive been thinking of ways i could convert him to include him in my Dark Angels army.
Here is what ive come up with so far

Any ideas on how i can dark angel him up a bit would be appreciated, im thinking of adding bits and pieces from the dark angel sprue to him?

Well after receiving afew suggestions over on another forum ive decided i will sculpt some robes on him, and add afew DA emblems to him.
I have filed down the round circle on his belt so it is flat and ill add a dark angels emblem to it.
Here are a few mock up pics i made in Paint Shop Pro.

Thankfully my painting skills are better than my PSP skills!

this looks really promising :) but for the minis sake.. use one of those rubber brushes to make a smoother surface of the GS :)

Thanks for your reply larre,
Im not quite sure what you mean about using a rubber brush for the GS? If its in reply to the pic of the Emperors Champion and the green looking stuff thats holding his arm on, thats actually blu tac i used to hold him together for the shot.

thanks again,

Hope I\'m not to late here to scream out my opinion on the robes idea. I\'ll be doing it in the style of Ash from the Evil Dead movies:

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! ;)

It\'s a very bad idea as far as I\'m concerned. This is one of the most elegant SM minis around and I don\'t think good looking robes are going to be easy to do well on him, and much more likely to screw him up. Even if you are a Green Stuff master I think there are far better ways to deal with him than spoiling his look with robes.

- Put a Dark Angels insignia-covered sword in his free hand.
- Put a Dark Angels shoulder pad on him
- Put a Dark Angels icon on the banner top
- File off the wreath on his head and put on the feathered plumes of the Dark Angels instead
- Add a DA symbol to his necklace
- Give him a cape of some sort, like the GW DA commanders that have just been released

Robes aren\'t particularly easy to sculpt on this guy. I made a shot at it a while back. They dont look bad but I don\'t think they are necessary. I think the best way to make him dark angelish would be to add the DA insignia on him in a couple places (shoulderpads, belt, etc) and maybe add those wings from the veteran sprue to his helmet.

In case you wanted to see my attempt at robes here they are:

Thanks for your replies
I think you guys got to me just in time, i had filed down his current robes a little but that will be easy to fix, i think i will take your advice and just add insignia etc to him.

Thanks again,

SirJDm, I definetly think you should try to sculpt that robe thing. who knows... it might develope you as a painter and a sculptor...
I look forward to see what you do and how you do it :)

Just a bit of an update on my progress so far.
Ive cleaned off enough parts for another devestator (making 3 out of 5 in total so far) and i have also assembled the rhino ( in a few parts for ease of painting).
The cork i ordered should arrive tomorrow so i can begin work on the bases, so its just a matter of waiting for my paint to arrive, although im not holding my breathe for it to come anytime this week...

Finally! something has arrived...

Well my cork arrived today and i have to say i dont know how i based without it, the level of customization ( Is that a word?) is fantastic. Im just testing out different ideas for the bases at the moment and i will have pics of the final base tomorrow.

Right on, cork is good stuff that\'s for sure. I\'m currently trying to find a good cheap way to get it locally. Haven\'t looked too hard yet tho to be honest lol
