I think this one is a very smart idea for producing your own patterns on whatever you need to... bases, armour pieces like the one on the example, walls, etc... Thank BgcDazzler for it!
Right then. Firstly some more alcohol-based lunacy (but then it is almost Christmas...). I don't have much by way of tools, but wanted to do a sort of tortoiseshell/stamped pattern on the pauldron before I stick Medusa on it. So I figured: why not make one? I stuck some clay on an oversized paper clip 'borrowed' from work...

Then made a reverse pattern in the end (a rough hexagon).

baked it, then whittled some of the excess with a knife to neaten and define the shape better:

And then the moment of truth: does it work? I tested it on a spare piece of clay, et voila!

hmm. Not too bad. So I then did it on the pauldron, and pre-Medusa it looks like this. I think I'll stipple it to give it a bit more interest, but I'm quite pleased with it.
