So, how long have YOU been painting figures?

Figures???

Airfix Henry VIII, Black Knight, skeleton etc when I was about 10.

I started daubing Humbrol enamels on Spitrires etc from the age of about 8.

I paint very little now however, although I have just gone full circle almost and started on some Japanese, manga garage kits.

I started when I was about 10 with scale aircraft models but I painted my first fantasy miniatures \"only\" in the early \'90s.
It\'s more than 15 years of fantasy miniatures and almost 30 years of modelling...:beer::drunk:

Also started when I was eight, so 17, coming on for 18 years ago. If you were to actually count the amount of hours during that time I have spent putting paint on minis though, people who started a year or so ago probably have the edge over me!

Started painting in 1976 with those groovy Aurora figure kits, then D&D figs, Tamyia, GW, garage kits and now I make my own, so I guess that puts me a little behind Dragonsreach at 31 years.

Involved in the hobby for 8 years, but only really got interested in high quality painting in the last year or so.

GW stuff mostly, as that is whats easily available in NZ.

I started with building model airplanes. I really loved painting cockpits and figures - the really detailed stuff. Around 10 I discovered Warhammer stuff and was smitten, but for some reason I didn\'t end up getting any \'till I was 16.

Overall it has been around 7 years for minis.

I\'m wondering how many figures everyone has finished, and how many estimated hours you have spent on the hobby?

I\'ve probably finished 40 or so completely, and I have quite a collection of half finished ones. I\'d estimate my time spent at 700-1000 hours, maybe even more.

Well your 40 minis in 7 years certainly makes me feel quite a bit better. I have got a lot more than that done, although a lot is at army standard. This is quite an interesting exercise in getting the old memory going actually. I\'ve done at least:

Heroquest contents (35)
Orc and Skaven Blood Bowl teams (30ish)
Witch Hunters and Possessed Mordheim Warbands (20ish)
Orlock Necromunda Gang (18)

1,500 point Bretonnian army (100ish)
1,500 point Tzeentch Daemonic Legion (40ish)

2,000 point Chaos Space Marine force (70ish)
3,000 point Ork force (200ish)
4,000 point Dark Angels force (150ish)
800 point Necron force (25ish)
1,000 point Tyranid force (50ish)

Hobbit militia (20)
Riders of Rohan (16)

Individual minis and whatnot (about another 40)

I think that adds up to 814 or there abouts at a quick count. If we include time spent thinking about stuff, planning projects, working out armies and gaming I\'ll go for a good 8,765.8 hours at least, as terrifyingly sad as that may sound!

Money spent... I\'d rather not even consider it!

I started a very, very long time ago, ooh must have been about 9 or 10 at the time, I used to paint the airfix oo/ho figures with a pin because I couldn\'t get a brush other than those cheap nasty things that came with kids paint sets in those days :D

I then moved up a scale to the Tamiya 1/35th stuff and really enjoyed those except that the only paint you could buy in the model shops then was enamels and I hated faffing around with thinners/white spirit all the time plus the taste was pure yuk as well (I started brush licking at an early age as well :D ).

Early 80\'s I discovered roll playing and and table top gaming, the roll playing lasted as long as the group I used to play with split up but the war gaming continued and the rate my pay packet lasted went down hill all the way there.

I have long since given up the gaming, well OK nearly :D I still enjoy Warmaster, the rest you an keep your arguements about what model is correct or can\'t use that because it is not a current GW model etc.
These days I just collect and paint, the amount I have spent over the years is probably staggering and I would hate to even try to estimate it all (probably pay off my mortgage).

As for the years, hmm lets see take out the odd break and I am looking at close to 30 years :wow::wow: Looking back at that now makes me think I really should get out more and get a life but then again nah, been there done that and a lot more than you can even imagine :D

Just think of all the money I could of spent :beer::beer::beer::drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk::drunk:

\"THE SUMMER OF 65\"

To be exact it was August 1965,my Mum bought me a Aurora Figure kit of Napoleon Solo from the Man from U.N.C.L.E. T.V. series. I stuck it together o.k. but needed help with the painting, that gloss emerald green suit still haunts me !:D lol :D
You can do the maths on how many years that is.
I can remember G.W. when it was at Daling Road & Mr livingstone / Jackson worked on White Dwarf upstairs !:wow:

Anybody else out there remember that first shop and the Olsen twins ?

GOD bless ......................VINCENTI

Hmmmmm. I started with oil paints, i was 5 Year old because my dad give me some platic cowboys painted by himslef so we painted together some more. Startet with some hundreds bad painted 54mm tin soldiers when i was 13 years old again. I paint my first fantasy minis when i was 16 years but still used oil paints. Still bad painted and my last one was when i was 20 Years. 2 Years ago i restarted my hobby with Acryl colors and now my minis are okay.

So i would say 2 years of painting where i make a real progress in painting.

I started at the tender *cough* age of seven on a fine summers day in 2001. ie about six years, not bad for a twelve year old.

Now the mathematicians amongst you will work out that\'s aproximatley 37 years.

Didn\'t realize you were THAT old!! :D Physically Yes, Mentally nowhere near adult! :D

Guess there\'s a few more figure makers than there were back then! Just outta curiosity - what did you start with? Historex? Airfix?
Yes Historex and Airfix but also Hinchcliffe Napoleonics and a company called New Hope Design.
The only Fantasy figures around were by a company called Pheonix and were 54 mm Really scantily clad \"Atlantis Females\".
Didn\'t dare send for the catalogue in case my mother saw it. She\'d have had a screaming blue fit at me.

And very nice figures they were as well for the time :D I didn\'t find out about them until the late 80\'s :innocent:

Early 80\'s in the UK was filled with grenadier and the Nick Lund Dwarves some excellent figures for the time before the arrival of Citadel/Ral Partha before that I only ever got to see the Airfix 54mm kits and Tamiya/Revell and one or two other of the plastic stuff, I think Italia had just come into its own then as well :D
