Okay posted some of the work I\'ve done over the last months. I have more to show further on though! :)

If you want close-ups/more views I\'ll try to get some more together tomorrow. Just ask!

I just want to take the time as well to say hello to everyone I met along the way in UK and france! I have had such a great time this fall and made some new friends during the way. It was amazing and I hope next year will be as fulfilling.

I also really understood what I need to change with my way of painting, I need to be less subtle. What does it matter if I do lots of work that nobody can see without perfect lighting and sometimes even a magnifying glass? :p in the cabinets at the events I was attending my minis looked uninteresting imo. My goal from now on is for my minis to look the best under all lightingconditions. More contrast, more colours but still subtle work when viewed under good lighting Not an easy equation but I will try.

Chaos Ogre Butcher
Beach babe Libby
Seamus the Madhatter
Malbeth with new base

Votes, Comments, questions and critique are more then welcome

Cheers for the comments. :) There are two ways of handling disappointment, either try to change the way you work or growing bitter. I\'m trying to do the first one... ;)

And you can all help me with some comments and constructive criticism! :D

Cool stuff, Sven! :)

Malbeth definitely looks better with this base! The Ogre is probably my favourite of these. I think this one has some of the ingredients that you need to emphasize to make your stuff stand out more. It\'s the least subtle of the group (although it has subtleties as well... if you look at it closely, which I have done! :)).

They\'re all class. Just need more contrast and definition to make them really pop.

Simple things like running a shadow between geezer\'s beard and furry lapel (which are blending into each other at the moment) would make a massive difference I reckon.

Hi Sven, it was really great meeting you in Paris! I had a great time analysing the painting in the Louvre with you hehe. I\'m sorry I didn\'t meet you sooner at UK GD....like I said, I am pretty sure you leant on the railing next to me at one point during the day, but I didn\'t realise it was you until it was too late haha :duh:

Your minis - well, I think we have had a pretty good discussion about painting and the directions in which we each need to go. From these 4 minis, the ogre is also my favourite - I can\'t help it, I have a disturbing love for the grotesque ;) I do think he is the most interesting in terms of colour though, and has more interesting details like the body hair, the tattoo, colours changes for the sore skin around the spikes etc., which add a lot more character. And the conversion work is great, you made the back look so much better than the original...love the skin folds in the back of his neck too hehe :D

Malbeth is great in terms of technique - the blending is very smooth, close to perfect. But the problem comes with the colours, as I told you...I feel like there is not enough depth to the colours - they are a bit too simple, lacking the nuance that give realism...and the colours all seem a bit too separate - for me, the mini is lacking something to unite the colour scheme. But it\'s still a great mini, of course :)

Libby is just a bit too plain for me...you are right: too subtle! Be more brave with the colours and lighting on the skin :) Great smoothness though, on her legs particularly.

The mad hatter, great face, and nice idea with the colours. Even though the black areas are well executed, both with smoothness and details like the textures etc., I find them a little bit too uninteresting...I don\'t know why, maybe the black is a bit too dominant on the mini. It makes the colour scheme a bit too simple maybe.

Anyway, keep it going sven, I know you will be improving more and more now - you have a great attitude to painting! ANd once again, a real pleasure spending some time with you in Paris....your map saved us on numerous occasions :D

great stuff as always and interesting points you made about the lighting and the subtleness..
It\'s a funny old game the UK GD and I think a big part of it is the lighting...

I was just happening to show my Dad one of the pieces I was working on while he was in the garden and it hit me like a brick how different it looked....

So when I was painting I would look at the odel outside..under my paint light in the normal room and in the local GW cabinet as well as outside in the shopping centre....

sounds like a lot but it really made a difference...It meant that with Fulgrim I saturated a lot of the colours more than th
ey were originally to give the Darker theme I wanted...
It really is a valid point

also as you say the subtlety factor...The Frodo you did (last year??) had all the subtlety of the usual but the bolder colours rew the initial interest I think..after that first eye drawing phase the subtle bits are then noticed on closer inspection...

really nice stuff look forward to seeing more.

THey\'re really good, they share a great sense of colour harmony and fantastic control over the lighting, I like them alot.
I reckon Seamus\'s pistol is lacking a little something compared to the rest of him, but that\'s just moaning for the sake of saying something, Great job

love the ogre mate :)
great tattoos and hair, the teeth and spines growing from the shoulders are realy cool as well.

to be honest the spines that are just starting to poke through the skin creep me out as they remind me of bot flie larvae.

Hey thanks for all the comments folks! :) They are all very helpful!

@Ritual: Cheers! Yeah but it\'s still too subtle.. on the skin the highlights needs to be pused one or two steps and the shadows as well.. maybe them even more so. And the colours I added for the skin needs to be saturated more to show up. The building work is definately not that subtle.. :)

@Automaton: Thank you for taking the time to comment on all, and cheers for the nice words! I concur with the assessments. :) I really feel like I\'m on the treshold now as I think I am getting the tools I need to improve much further. I\'m feeling really positive at the moment as I now have a target, something to work towards. As for seamus, the trousers are black but the tophat and jacket are a dark green. Not sure it shows... maybe I was *tadaa*too subtle...? haha I think what Steve says in the comments are very true.. it might need another midtone colour. And more contrast of course. And yeah, again I had a great time :) World Expo next, eh? ;)

@Demonherald: Yeah light really makes a huge difference, especially when you are being subtle. Some of the \"photoshopped\" discussions I think might have been raised from people seeing miniatures looking really plain in cabinets at GD\'s for example. And we are more often that not working with optical illusions as well. The smoothness of the blend will differ with different lighting and how that lighting is positioned.

A thing I find really funny is how a blend can look worse a feet away then it does up close in perfect lighting. I noticed it with some minis at ravage that I was able to see up close. Might have been how the lighting was positioned and how short the transition is. But it\'s a bit strange.

With increased contrast and more defining lines I think you can make your miniatures more coherent looking under all types of lighting and that\'s what I\'m trying to do right now. As with Frodo.. it might be even more subtle it is a bit greyish... I was probably lucky that they noticed it. :) It might have been the OSL and the base that got it noticed and then they liked it when they saw it close. Not sure.

@gpa: :) I will try do do something similary creepy for next GD. I have some ideas....
