The beard could use some more definition IMHO, but overall, a very good result especially considering the time you spent .

the beard partialy got washed out because of the quick photo taking, and it\'s also realy badly sculpted.
i did it for a guitar student of mine as he is a gamer, and it\'s his birthday.

the freehand is just some quick little swirls with each one mirroring each other.
i am going to try and see if i can get fast enough to get a finalist at the gd with 15hrs of work including conversion time.
i don\'t think i will pull it off but, crazier things/decisions have happened.

But please tell me you didn\'t buy one of the GW Paintbrush special boxes with the Brass bolter shell casing?
The guys at the local GW shop have assured me that I\'d be painting better with one of those sets, even if they were a little pricey.
Afterwards one of the friendlier red-shirts pulled me aside and let me in on the fact that I\'d save about 10% on the price by ordering it from mail-order and having it delivered to the shop -- now if that ain\'t service, I dunno what is! lollol
edit: Btw, gp, that\'s a great paint for so fast a job -- I wouldn\'t be able to match you for precision or speed even with one of those sets.lol

it is indeed one of the plastic gandalfs. (buy the metal ones they are much better)
@ mike, i got it with staff discount. with free special delivery thrown in so it worked out at roughly the right price.
they are lasting longer than other cheap kolinskys i have used but in time i will probably upgrade to w+n or da vinci brushes.

the mines of moria box as far as i know is a single item and they won\'t be selling the plastic fellowship sprues seperatley.
the casting on the plastic gandalf isn\'t that great to be honest.
i would go for a metal one any day.

Can you talk a little bit about the techniques you used to get this finish so quickly. While i understand the limited palate helped speed things along, were there any specific techniques that aided in zipping things along? I have a LARGE army project coming up and i\'m looking for a way to get a quality outcome without spending a lifetime on it.

instead of doing base colours and then highlighting all the way up, use washes to start with.
paint your base colour i.e. a medium gray.
then add a little black and turn it into a wash.
don\'t wash the entire surface, only the parts you want shading. keep adding black and doing more shading until it is dark enough.
think of it as reverse highlighting.
then with your base coat add a lighter colour and proceed to highlight.
when you are satisfied, tadaaa!
with a hairdryer you can get the washes done realy quickly.
i paint minis for rank and file to that standard nowadays.
