Spies infiltrating WoW

lollollol and after spending millions of dollars the US Govt. figures out that while in an anonymous online setting 90% of people tend to act like socially retarded four year olds and exibit extraordinary violent and antisocial behavior.... duh

Spose it\'s a good thing I stopped playin I\'d end up getting profiled for killing and corpse camping the lvl 40 who was ganking westfall and end up being on a watchlist and unable to fly.

I think there needs to be a study on how many studies the US Govt does that are pointless and absolutley moronic and how much money could be saved and put into oh something worth while like education.

I can see it now. Here I am at home watching TV and Homeland Security breaks in and arrests some guy be cause he tries to play as a team, doesn\'t frag his buddies intentionally, and speaks with English not 1337, and realizes that he can fly, so stays away from the pilots seat.
God save America......

Alright...I saw this and had to bite. Im not one to call people out...nor is this a call-out of any sort. I played WoW for a long time...and so did a girl I was with for a while. Id known her for years and it was by no means an e-fling. She left me for someone she met IN GAME and never said goodbye. Its not just the guys that have the potential to take it to an unacceptable extreme...its everyone that plays this God-forsaken game. After that incident...the game lost its luster. I pulled that needle outta my arm a good while back and Id rather eat a bullet than go back to it. And if the involved parties (what are the odds I know)see this then so be it...I really couldnt give a damn.

Damn yo, that\'s harsh.

I actually knew a guy (friend of a friend) for a while and the whole reason his wife left him and took his daughter with her was because he was spending too much time in game. They are now back together but they were separated for quite a few years and didn\'t patch things up until recently.

It was a while back...besides...a game is temporary...art is forever. Thats why Im glad I came back to painting minis(even though Im very slow at it right now).

Yeah well in terms of the financial justification of it . . . I\'d rather have a tangible item and hone my skills and be able to call myself an artist over playing a toon. Everyone I know seems to play or have played at once. I did a trial for 10 days. That was it. I\'d rather paint.

I have not played the game (or really any online game for that matter) but my question is this. Is your real life really that bad that you have to spend a lot of your free time in a virtual world?
My wife is a psychologist and one of the many things i have learnt from her is to not address the symptom but work out what the actual problem is. Whether it be drugs/alcohol/online worlds/miniatures/ whatever, what is causing you to seek comfort in that area in the first place. I am not trying to put anyone down, but what was the inital problem in the relationship or life that caused the person to act in the way they did.

OMG Osama Bin Laden has the flak cannon! Way to post a shot from Unreal Tournament, a screenshot that\'s probably 5 years old.

Anyway I have no idea how this is legal. Oh wait, the US Government say \"freedom\" is not the same as \"civil liberties\" ... so they can do whatever they want.

I think it would be awesome if they started an ad campaign: \"Free epic gear for every terrorist you turn in\" lol

Give me Guild Wars any day, where I can take assurance that the only people stealing my data is the company I paid for the game in the first place :D

I live in an area that doesnt offer much in the way of things Im interested in. I have to drive an hour for a decent selection of music to look at. Unfortunately...I *had* let myself slip into a mindset of \"I\'ve nothing else to do...might as well play this...\". I also had made a lot of friends...several of whom I still speak with. Thats why I played for so long...and I genuinely did enjoy the game for a long time. The last 6 months I played, however, the game was not that enjoyable and I realized it was time to hang it up. After I hit that cancel account button I immediately felt better about things in general...even though I still struggle with boredom occasionally.

First off, normally I don\'t double post but I want this reply to stand out. <edit> Hey someone posted before I could double post, it\'s not as bad as I thought :D </edit>

Yramrag, is your wife raising the question of hiding from reality, or is this your theory? I\'m finishing my psych degree this year and I think it\'s absurd to be judging people because they have a hobby.

I don\'t play games, paint models, or anything like that because my life sucks and I need to hide from the psychological pain... I do it because I enjoy it. Thorndike calls this the Law of Effect, actions that are \"satisfying\" are likely to be repeated with greater frequency than actions that aren\'t. I don\'t want to get dragged into a psych debate with Skinner et al. questioning the use of the word \"satisfaction\" or anything like that, I\'m just sticking to the main point for the sake of non-psych students on here.

Having a hobby or a pastime is perfectly normal and healthy, so long as it doesn\'t turn into an obsession that interferes with daily life or causes significant distress for yourself or others. Psychoanalytic people will probably say that having an artistic hobby is a good thing, because it allows sublimation of conflict/stress that you might not be able to deal with in any other way (without being socially unacceptable). Having a beer once in a while isn\'t a problem, hell getting drunk once in a while isn\'t a psychological problem either.

I personally know of about 5 destroyed marriages from Evercrack or WOW..3 have ended in Divorce and 2 should be by now. And yes Lok iut was both sexs involved in the game..

It really is tragic.

@ Jericho. I am not talking about hobbies (i threw in the miniature thing just as a joke;)). But a person who paints a couple of hours a night a couple of times a week is quite different from someone who play WoW several hours a day every day of the week to the detriment of their family/personal life. By detriment i mean having your partner leave you. Not that you have sore eyes from looking at a computer screen all night.
Yes my wife will point out that most activities are fine in a measured ammount (Drugs of course are an exception as are many other things like that). The point is of hiding from reality by masking the problem with something else. Drug and alcohol abuse are difficult because of the physical withdrawal symptons but no treatment for these types of addiction is overly successful if it doesn\'t treat the underlying problem that led to the behaviour in the first place.
By all means, play WoW as much as you want, but be aware that your actions will have consequences. I don\'t know about America or England (or anywhere else), but currently in Australia we have a massive problem with problem gamblers and poker (slot/fruit/one armed bandits) machines. Governments are claiming that they are trying to solve these issues (which they aren\'t trying all that hard because they love the free money it generates for them) by installing clocks and windows in gaming areas to let people know how long they have been there. This addresses their concern that \"Gambling is fine, just be aware of how long you have been there\", but it doesn\'t go to the root of the problem \"Why are you here?\".
My wife works in a family relationship centre for couples who are divorcing and the one of first question they ask is \"What has made you come here?\" Sure the initial response might be \"Because we are divorcing\", but WHY are you divorcing?
I am not a psychologist and i have never studied psychology. I only pick up what i talk about it with my wife. Yes you are right having a hobby is great. I didn\'t say it wasn\'t. I was commenting on what happens when it becomes an obsession. Having a drink is good. Getting drunk is good. I don\'t really do either because my Grandfather was an alcoholic and it scared the shit out of me when we went there because he was an angry drunk. But if someone was going out and getting drunk every night because there was problems at home, then i would consider that to be a problem.

BTW what type of psychology are you majoring in?

I\'m going to be applying for grad studies in Clinical Psychology pretty soon.

It wasn\'t too clear who you were commenting on in your post, that\'s why I reacted so strongly. If you were referring to the couple that supposedly broke up over WoW then I agree there\'s probably a lot bigger issues in that relationship than computer game use.

I have known a few couples (married folks and people who have lived together 5+ years) that have broken up citing wargaming/WoW addictions, but honestly I don\'t think that\'s the main issue in a case like these. There\'s probably some serious communication/intimacy issues among other things when someone prefers to play with their guildmates than go to bed with their spouse.

I think we\'re in agreement now that we know a bit more about what we meant to say :D

Clinical psych. Cool. My wife is a Counselling Psychologist and she wouldn\'t mind going back and doing a masters in Clinical psych (she has even been offered a few scholarships to do one) but as we are trying to pay for our house, she wants to keep working fulltime.
